Active optical clock based on four-level quantum system
Active optical clock, a new conception of atomic clock, has been proposed
recently. In this report, we propose a scheme of active optical clock based on
four-level quantum system. The final accuracy and stability of two-level
quantum system are limited by second-order Doppler shift of thermal atomic
beam. To three-level quantum system, they are mainly limited by light shift of
pumping laser field. These limitations can be avoided effectively by applying
the scheme proposed here. Rubidium atom four-level quantum system, as a typical
example, is discussed in this paper. The population inversion between
and states can be built up at a time scale of s.
With the mechanism of active optical clock, in which the cavity mode linewidth
is much wider than that of the laser gain profile, it can output a laser with
quantum-limited linewidth narrower than 1 Hz in theory. An experimental
configuration is designed to realize this active optical clock.Comment: 5 page
Low-momentum Pion Enhancement Induced by Chiral Symmetry Restoration
The thermal and nonthermal pion production by sigma decay and its relation
with chiral symmetry restoration in a hot and dense matter are investigated.
The nonthermal decay into pions of sigma mesons which are popularly produced in
chiral symmetric phase leads to a low-momentum pion enhancement as a possible
signature of chiral phase transition at finite temperature and density.Comment: 3 pages, 2 figure
Spin current through an ESR quantum dot: A real-time study
The spin transport in a strongly interacting spin-pump nano-device is studied
using the time-dependent variational-matrix-product-state (VMPS) approach. The
precession magnetic field generates a dissipationless spin current through the
quantum dot. We compute the real time spin current away from the equilibrium
condition. Both transient and stationary states are reached in the simulation.
The essentially exact results are compared with those from the Hartree-Fock
approximation (HFA). It is found that correlation effect on the physical
quantities at quasi-steady state are captured well by the HFA for small
interaction strength. However the HFA misses many features in the real time
dynamics. Results reported here may shed light on the understanding of the
ultra-fast processes as well as the interplay of the non-equilibrium and
strongly correlated effect in the transport properties.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Modeling soil organic carbon change in croplands of China
Using 1990 conditions, we modeled carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) biogeochemical cycles in croplands of China (and, for comparison, the United States) to estimate the annual soil organic-carbon (SOC) balance for all cropland. Overall, we estimate that China\u27s croplands lost 1.6% of their SOC (to a depth of 0.3 m) in 1990, and that U.S. cropland lost 0.1%. A key element in this difference was that ∼25% of aboveground crop residue in China was returned to the soil, compared to ∼90% in the United States. In China, SOC losses were greatest in the northeast (∼103 kg C·ha–1·yr–1), and were generally smaller (\u3c0.5 × 103 kg C·ha–1·yr–1) in regions with a longer cultivation history. Some regions showed SOC gains, generally \u3c103 kg C·ha–1·yr–1. Reduced organic-matter input to China\u27s cropland soils, and lower overall SOC levels in those soils, led to lower levels of N mineralization in the simulations, consistent with higher rates of synthetic-fertilizer application in China. C and N cycles are closely linked to soil fertility, crop yield, and non-point-source environmental pollution
Effects of the sintering atmosphere on the superconductivity of SmFeAsO1-xFx compounds
A series of SmFeAsO1-xFx samples were sintered in quartz tubes filled with
air of different pressures. The effects of the sintering atmosphere on the
superconductivity were systematically investigated. The SmFeAsO1-xFx system
maintains a transition temperature (Tc) near 50 K until the concentration of
oxygen in quartz tubes increases to a certain threshold, after which Tc
decreases dramatically. Fluorine losses, whether due to vaporization, reactions
with starting materials, and reactions with oxygen, proved to be detrimental to
the superconductivity of this material. The deleterious effects of the oxygen
in the sintering atmosphere were also discussed in detail.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure
Short-term earthquake forecasting experiment before and during the L’Aquila (central Italy) seismic sequence of April 2009
In this paper, we compare the forecasting performance of several statistical models, which are used to describe the occurrence process of earthquakes in forecasting the short-term earthquake probabilities during the L’Aquila earthquake sequence in central Italy in 2009. These models include the Proximity to Past Earthquakes (PPE) model and two versions of the Epidemic Type Aftershock Sequence (ETAS) model. We used the information gains corresponding to the Poisson and binomial scores to evaluate the performance of these models. It is shown that both ETAS models work better than the PPE model. However, in comparing the two types of ETAS models, the one with the same fixed exponent coefficient (alpha) = 2.3 for both the productivity function and the scaling factor in the spatial response function (ETAS I), performs better in forecasting the active aftershock sequence than the model with different exponent coefficients (ETAS II), when the Poisson score is adopted. ETAS II performs better when a lower magnitude threshold of 2.0 and the binomial score are used. The reason is found to be that the catalog does not have an event of similar magnitude to the L’Aquila mainshock (Mw 6.3) in the training period (April 16, 2005 to March 15, 2009), and the (alpha)-value is underestimated, thus the forecast seismicity is underestimated when the productivity function is extrapolated to high magnitudes. We also investigate the effect of the inclusion of small events in forecasting larger events. These results suggest that the training catalog used for estimating the model parameters should include earthquakes of magnitudes similar to the mainshock when forecasting seismicity during an aftershock sequence
Self-aligned 0.12mm T-gate In.53Ga.47As/In.52Al.48As HEMT Technology Utilising a Non Annealed Ohmic Contact Strategy
An InGaAs/InAlAs based HEMT structure, lattice matched to an InP substrate, is presented in which drive current and transconductance has been optimized through a double-delta doping strategy. Together with an increase in channel carrier density, this allows the use of a non-annealed ohmic contact process. HEMT devices with 120 nm standard and self-aligned T-gates were fabricated using the non-annealed ohmic process. At DC, self-aligned and standard devices exhibited transconductances of up to 1480 and 1100 mS/mm respectively, while both demonstrated current densities in the range 800 mA/mm. At RF, a cutoff frequency f/sub T/ of 190 GHz was extracted for the self-aligned device. The DC characteristics of the standard devices were then calibrated and modelled using a compound semiconductor Monte Carlo device simulator. MC simulations provide insight into transport within the channel and illustrate benefits over a single delta doped structure
