Weierstrass representations for harmonic morphisms on Euclidean spaces and spheres
We construct large families of harmonic morphisms which are holomorphic with
respect to Hermitian structures by finding heierarchies of Weierstrass-type
representations. This enables us to find new examples of complex-valued
harmonic morphisms from Euclidean spaces and spheres.Comment: Minor revision adding example. Latex 2.09. 14 page
Contemporary splinting practice in the UK for adults with neurological dysfunction: A cross-sectional survey
This article is made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.Aim: To explore the contemporary splinting practice of UK occupational therapists and physiotherapists for adults with neurological dysfunction.
Method: Cross-sectional online survey of members of the Association of Chartered Physiotherapists in Neurology and College of Occupational Therapists Specialist Section Neurological Practice.
Results: Four hundred and twenty therapists completed the survey. Contracture management is the most common rationale for therapists splinting adults with neurological dysfunction. Other shared therapeutic goals of splinting include maintaining muscle and joint alignment, spasticity management, function, pain management and control of oedema. Considerable clinical uncertainty was uncovered in practice particularly around wearing regimens of splints. Most therapists have access to locally-derived splinting guidelines, which may contribute to this diversity of practice.
Conclusions: This study provides a unique insight into aspects of contemporary splinting practice among UK therapists, who belong to a specialist neurological professional network and work in a number of different health-care settings with adults who have a neurological condition. Study findings show a wide variation in splinting practice, thereby indicating a potential need for national guidance to assist therapists in this area of clinical uncertainty. Further research is required to establish best practice parameters for splinting in neurological rehabilitation
Acoustic Effects in Classical Nucleation Theory
The effect of sound wave oscillations on the rate of nucleation in a parent phase can be calculated by expanding the free energy of formation of a nucleus of the second phase in powers of the acoustic pressure. Since the period of sound wave oscillation is much shorter than the time scale for nucleation, the acoustic effect can be calculated as a time average of the free energy of formation of the nucleus. The leading non-zero term in the time average of the free energy is proportional to the square of the acoustic pressure. The Young-Laplace equation for the surface tension of the nucleus can be used to link the time average of the square of the pressure in the parent phase to its time average in the nucleus of the second phase. Due to the surface tension, the pressure in the nuclear phase is higher than the pressure in the parent phase. The effect is to lower the free energy of formation of the nucleus and increase the rate of nucleation

Academic Major, Gender, Personal Values, And Reactions To An Ethical Dilemma
Recent corporate scandals have increased public interest in the area of business ethics. This study examines the relationship of gender and choice of academic major to personal values and to ethical choices, and the relationship of personal values to ethical choices. Two hundred fifty three subjects read a case that presented a tax evasion dilemma. The subjects responded to a series of action statements related to the ethical dilemma and completed a personal values survey. The responses to the action statements were used to calculate a tax compliance score. Participants were also asked to make a choice as to whether the taxpayer should or should not report all of the taxable income. The results indicate that both the tax compliance score and the tax payment choice differed by gender and academic major. Furthermore, gender differences were found on five of the ten personal value constructs and academic major differences were found on four of the ten personal value constructs. With regard to the relationship of personal values to ethical choices, it was found that three of the personal value constructs were correlated with the compliance score and the tax payment decision
