An application of a psychometric personality type inventory to improve team development and performance
The issue of individual type preferences and how they relate to learning and human resource management are explored. Team learning, knowledge transfer, characteristics of leadership and trust and trusting in the context of team development and performance, are analyzed through the use of the Myers Briggs Type Indicator. The research is conducted with a semi professional Australian Rules football team. The team consists of a culturally diverse group. Predominantly, Australian men between the ages of 18 and 35 years. The men are university educated, trades professionals or blue collar workers, who volunteered to complete the Myers Briggs Type Indicator with the expectation of enhancing team functioning and performance. The authors’ experiences of sports coaching and the use of psychological type theory are described when applied at a pre season training camp. Critical team performance factors are compared and contrasted with individual personality type preferences over a period of several weeks. The implications, for more extensive use of type theory in sporting team development, is discussed in the context of team learning, knowledge transfer, trust and trusting and leadership
Some animals are more equal than others: Validation of a new scale to measure how attitudes to animals depend on species and human purpose of use

Globally, many millions of animals are used by humans every year and much of this usage causes public concern. A new scale, devised to measure attitudes to animal use in relation to the purpose of use and species, the Animal Purpose Questionnaire (APQ), was completed by in total 483 participants, 415 British nationals and 68 participants from 39 other countries. The APQ was presented in two survey formats, alongside an established Animal Attitudes Scale (AAS). In both surveys, participants also provided demographic details to provide a context to their attitudes to animals. As might be expected, and consistent with the validity of the new scale, overall scores on the AAS and APQ were highly correlated. However, the APQ provided a more differentiated measure of attitudes to animal use across a variety of settings. The results showed that there was overall higher levels of agreement with the use of animals in medical research and basic science, less endorsement for food production and pest control, and the use of animals for other cultural practices was generally disapproved of, irrespective of species. Participants overall disagreed with the use of rabbits, monkeys, badgers, tree shrews (survey 1), chimpanzees, dogs, dolphins and parrots (survey 2), but were neutral about the use of rats, mice, pigs, octopus, chickens, zebrafish (survey 1), carp, chickens, pigs, pigeons, rabbits and rats (survey 2). Interactions between species and purpose were largely driven by the consideration of using diverse species for food production. In general, females and vegetarians expressed less agreement with the use of animals with some differences by purpose of use. Pet keeping consistently predicted reduced willingness to use animals for basic science (only). Under the radar? 'Soft' residential densification in England, 2001-2011
Urban compaction policies have been widely adopted in developed countries in pursuit of more sustainable cities. Compactness is achieved through a process of ‘densification’, of developing and using land and buildings more intensively. However, empirical evidence on the processes and outcomes of urban densification is lacking. The paper addresses this lacuna. It considers densification in England, a country that has long experience of applying policies of urban containment and consolidation; and one where new data sources allow the analysis of recent land use change at a level of detail not hitherto possible. In England between 2001 and 2011 the bulk of additional dwellings were accommodated within urban areas, increasing their density. Yet there were wide inter- and intra-regional variations in the pattern of densification: for example, in the contributions of large scale, formal development and of small scale, informal, gradual change – of ‘hard’ and ‘soft’ densification – to the process. Geodynamic setting and origin of the Oman/UAE ophiolite
The ~500km-long mid-Cretaceous Semail nappe of the Sultanate of Oman and UAE (henceforth referred to as the Oman ophiolite) is the largest and best-preserved ophiolite complex known. It is of particular importance because it is generally believed to have an internal structure and composition closely comparable to that of crust formed at the present-day East Pacific Rise (EPR), making it our only known on-land analogue for ocean lithosphere formed at a fast spreading rate. On the basis of this assumption Oman has long played a pivotal role in guiding our conceptual understanding of fast-spreading ridge processes, as modern fast-spread ocean crust is largely inaccessible
A downward revision to the distance of the 1806−20 cluster and associated magnetar from Gemini Near-Infrared Spectroscopy
We present H- and K-band spectroscopy of OB and Wolf–Rayet (WR) members of the Milky Way cluster 1806−20 (G10.0–0.3) to obtain a revised cluster distance, of relevance to the 2004 giant flare from the (soft gamma repeater) SGR 1806−20 magnetar. From GNIRS (Gemini Near-Infrared Spectrograph) spectroscopy obtained with Gemini South, four candidate OB stars are confirmed as late O/early B supergiants, while we support previous mid-WN and late WC classifications for two WR stars. Based upon an absolute Ks-band magnitude calibration for B supergiants and WR stars, and near-infrared (IR) photometry from NIRI (Near-Infrared Imager) at Gemini North plus archival VLT/ISAAC (Very Large Telescope/Infrared Spectrometer And Array Camera) data sets, we obtain a cluster distance modulus of 14.7 ± 0.35 mag. The known stellar content of the 1806−20 cluster suggests an age of 3–5 Myr, from which theoretical isochrone fits infer a distance modulus of 14.7 ± 0.7 mag. Together, our results favour a distance modulus of 14.7 ± 0.4 mag (8.7+1.8−1.5 kpc) to the 1806−20 cluster, which is significantly lower than the nominal 15 kpc distance to the magnetar. For our preferred distance, the peak luminosity of the 2004 December giant flare is reduced by a factor of 3 to 7 × 1046 erg s−1, such that the contamination of BATSE (Burst And Transient Source Experiment) short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) from giant flares of extragalactic magnetars is reduced to a few per cent. We infer a magnetar progenitor mass of ∼48+20−8 M⊙, in close agreement with that obtained recently for the magnetar in Westerlund 1
