    Arboretum Development on the Campus of Southern Adventist University

    Arboreta provide communities with opportunities to learn about and grow in appreciation of tree and shrub species. This increased appreciation can help foster conservation efforts of native species. Establishing a horticultural plan for an arboretum requires baseline data including the identification and number of all representative species. In this study, species richness and abundance of all trees on the main campus of Southern Adventist University (SAU) located in Collegedale, Tennessee was determined in order to develop a horticultural plan to increase the diversity of native species. Each tree was tagged with a specific number and diameter at breast height (DBH) was measured. High-precision global positioning system (GPS) was used to establish the location of each tree. This information was used to create a map with layers for each species. Species abundance and diversity were compared to the same for the arboreta at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC), Vanderbilt University (VU), and East Tennessee State University (ETSU). We identified a total of 1,003 trees on our campus which included 76 species. Nineteen species were represented by only one individual each. Tsuga canadensis (Eastern hemlock) was the most abundant species with 142 trees. Of the 76 species, 50% (n = 38) were native to Tennessee as compared to 43% (n = 27) at UTC, 38% (n = 52) at VU, and 24% (n = 56) at ETSU. The horticultural plan is presented in this study

    The transition of medical students through residency: Effects on physical activity and other lifestyle-related behaviors

    © 2016 Human Kinetics, Inc.Background: Little is known about lifestyle choices and preventive healthcare-seeking behaviors during the transition from medical school graduation to residency training, a period characterized by increased rates of stress and lack of free time due to demanding working conditions. All of these issues are likely to affect physical activity (PA) level. This study explored the evolution of PA and other lifestyle behaviors during this transition. Methods: A cross-sectional study and a cohort study were conducted with medical students (2010) and physicians before and after the first year of residency (2013 and 2014). A self-administered questionnaire assessed PA, health and lifestyle behaviors. Results: From a sample of 420 medical students and 478 residents, 74%comply with current PA guidelines. PA decreased by 16%during residency. Low levels of PA were found among (i) females and in respondents who reported (ii) poor self-perceived health and (iii) unhealthy body weight (P <.05). Low PA level was also significantly associated with poor mental health in first-year residents. Conclusions: The transition has a negative effect on physicians' PA level that may affect physicians' own health and patient care. Medical programs should encourage residents to engage in PA to assure physicians' personal and mental health

    Comparison of 1-repetition-maximum performance across 3 weightlifting overhead pressing exercises and sport groups

    Objective: This study aimed to (I) compare the one repetition maximum (1RM) performance between the push press (PP), push jerk (PJ) and split jerk (SJ), and (II) explore these differences between weightlifters, CrossFit® athletes and a mixed group of athletes. Method: Forty-six resistance trained male (age: 28.8 ± 6.4 years; height: 180.0 ± 6.0 cm; body mass: 84.1 ± 10.2 kg; weightlifting training experience: 3.64 ± 3.14 years) participated in this study. The 1RM performance of the PP, PJ and SJ were assessed during the same session in a sequential order (i.e. combined 1RM assessment method). Thirty-six participants were re-tested to determine between-session reliability of the 1RM values. Results: Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICC) and associated 95% confidence intervals showed a high between-session reliability for the PP (ICC = 0.98 [0.95-0.99]), PJ (ICC = 0.99 [0.98-1.00]) and SJ (ICC = 0.99 [0.98-1.00]). There was a significant main effect of exercise (2 = 0.662) and exercise x group interaction (2 = 0.066) on the 1RM performance (p<0.0001), while the main effect of group did not reach statistical significance (p=0.072). Conclusion: This study provides evidence that the weightlifting overhead pressing derivatives impact the 1RM performance. In addition, the interaction of exercise and sport group was caused by the higher differences in the 1RM performance between-exercises for weightlifters compared to CrossFit® and a mixed group of athletes. Therefore, strength and conditioning professionals should be aware that the differences in 1RM performance between weightlifting overhead pressing derivatives may be affected by the sport group

    Inhibition of transforming growth factor-β restores endothelial thromboresistance in vein grafts

    BackgroundThrombosis is a major cause of the early failure of vein grafts (VGs) implanted during peripheral and coronary arterial bypass surgeries. Endothelial expression of thrombomodulin (TM), a key constituent of the protein C anticoagulant pathway, is markedly suppressed in VGs after implantation and contributes to local thrombus formation. While stretch-induced paracrine release of transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β) is known to negatively regulate TM expression in heart tissue, its role in regulating TM expression in VGs remains unknown.MethodsChanges in relative mRNA expression of major TGF-β isoforms were measured by quantitative polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) in cultured human saphenous vein smooth muscle cells (HSVSMCs) subjected to cyclic stretch. To determine the effects of paracrine release of TGF-β on endothelial TM mRNA expression, human saphenous vein endothelial cells (HSVECs) were co-cultured with stretched HSVSMCs in the presence of 1D11, a pan-neutralizing TGF-β antibody, or 13C4, an isotype-control antibody. Groups of rabbits were then administered 1D11 or 13C4 and underwent interpositional grafting of jugular vein segments into the carotid circulation. The effect of TGF-β inhibition on TM gene expression was measured by qPCR; protein C activating capacity and local thrombus formation were measured by in situ chromogenic substrate assays; and VG remodeling was assessed by digital morphometry.ResultsCyclic stretch induced TGF-β1 expression in HSVSMCs by 1.9 ± 0.2-fold (P < .001) without significant change in the expressions of TGF-β2 and TGF-β3. Paracrine release of TGF-β1 by stretched HSVSMCs inhibited TM expression in stationary HSVECs placed in co-culture by 57 ± 12% (P = .03), an effect that was abolished in the presence of 1D11. Similarly, TGF-β1 was the predominant isoform induced in rabbit VGs 7 days after implantation (3.5 ± 0.4-fold induction; P < .001). TGF-β1 protein expression localized predominantly to the developing neointima and coincided with marked suppression of endothelial TM expression (16% ± 2% of vein controls; P < .03), a reduction in situ activated protein C (APC)-generating capacity (53% ± 9% of vein controls; P = .001) and increased local thrombus formation (3.7 ± 0.8-fold increase over vein controls; P < .01). External stenting of VGs to limit vessel distension significantly reduced TGF-β1 induction and TM downregulation. Systemic administration of 1D11 also effectively prevented TM downregulation, preserved APC-generating capacity, and reduced local thrombus in rabbit VGs without observable effect on neointima formation and other morphometric parameters 6 weeks after implantation.ConclusionTM downregulation in VGs is mediated by paracrine release of TGF-β1 caused by pressure-induced vessel stretch. Systemic administration of an anti-TGF-β antibody effectively prevented TM downregulation and preserved local thromboresistance without negative effect on VG remodeling.Clinical RelevanceVein grafts (VGs) are commonly used conduits for coronary and peripheral arterial bypass surgeries. Thrombosis is a major cause of early VG failure. Trombomodulin (TM), a key component of the anticoagulant protein C pathway, is downregulated early after VG implantation and facilitates local thrombus formation. We found that paracrine release of transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1), caused by pressure-induced stretch, was a potent negative regulator of TM in rabbit VGs. Administration of a neutralizing anti-TGF-β antibody effectively prevented TM downregulation and reduced local thrombus generation without adversely affecting long-term VG remodeling. This may represent a novel strategy to improve patency in patients undergoing arterial bypass procedures

    Engineering DNA-grafted quatsomes as stable nucleic acid-responsive fluorescent nanovesicles

    The development of artificial vesicles into responsive architectures capable of sensing the biological environment and simultaneously signaling the presence of a specific target molecule is a key challenge in a range of biomedical applications from drug delivery to diagnostic tools. Herein, the rational design of biomimetic DNA-grafted quatsome (QS) nanovesicles capable of translating the binding of a target molecule to amphiphilic DNA probes into an optical output is presented. QSs are synthetic lipid-based nanovesicles able to confine multiple organic dyes at the nanoscale, resulting in ultra-bright soft materials with attractiveness for sensing applications. Dye-loaded QS nanovesicles of different composition and surface charge are grafted with fluorescent amphiphilic nucleic acid-based probes to produce programmable FRET-active nanovesicles that operate as highly sensitive signal transducers. The photophysical properties of the DNA-grafted nanovesicles are characterized and the highly selective, ratiometric detection of clinically relevant microRNAs with sensitivity in the low nanomolar range are demonstrated. The potential applications of responsive QS nanovesicles for biosensing applications but also as functional nanodevices for targeted biomedical applications is envisaged

    The functionality is the main aspect of the urban area of the twin towers located at the end of the "Paseo de la Castellana" (Madrid). With a tilting of 15º over the vertical and crossing directions, such architectonic area is detached for its place and design of facilities and installations. The structural system is very complex due to the high technology applied for its construction, what made very difficult the ending of project. The "Puerta de Europa" towers will be used for office rental and they are (due to the structural system and quality of construction materials used) one of the most important buildings due to not only to the quality of materials and design, but also due to their security and control centralized systems.La funcionalidad preside el conjunto urbanístico formado por las dos torres situadas al final del Paseo de la Castellana. Con una inclinación de 15º sobre su vertical y hacia un punto común, dicho conjunto arquitectónico destaca, sobre todo, por su ubicación, diseño de instalaciones y servicios. Se destaca la complejidad de su sistema estructural que, unida a la alta tecnología empleada en su construcción, dificultaron la consecución del proyecto.     Does sex impact the differences and relationships in the one repetition maximum performance across weightlifting overhead pressing exercises?

    This study aimed to determine the impact of sex on the differences and relationships of the one repetition maximum (1RM) performance between 3 overhead pressing exercises (push press [PP], push jerk [PJ] and split jerk [SJ]). 15 men (body mass [BM]: 82.3 ± 9.9 kg; weightlifting training experience: 2.6 ± 1.6 years) and 15 women (BM: 64.4 ± 7.0 kg; weightlifting training experience: 2.2 ± 1.4 years) participated in this study. A ratio-scaled (1RM·BM) was used for the comparison between them. The 1RM of the 3 exercises were evaluated within the same testing session using a combined 1RM assessment method. The interaction effect of exercise and sex did not reach statistical significance (p = 0.671; η = 0.001). In contrast, there were significant main effects of exercise (p ≤ 0.01) and sex (p < 0.001) with medium (η = 0.096) and large effect sizes (η = 0.306), respectively. A similar main effect of exercise was reported for both men (PP [1.0 ± 0.1 kg·kg] < PJ [1.1 ± 0.2 kg·kg] ∼ SJ [1.2 ± 0.2 kg·kg]) and women (PP [0.8 ± 0.1 kg·kg] < PJ [0.9 ± 0.2 kg·kg] ∼ SJ [0.9 ± 0.2 kg·kg]). The 1RM performance of the 3 exercises was significantly correlated for men (r [range] = 0.856-0.963) and women (r [range] = 0.636-0.925). Sex does not affect the differences in the 1RM performance across weightlifting overhead pressing exercises. However, stronger correlations and lower variation in the 1RM performance during the PP, PJ, and SJ are expected for men compared with women
