Regularization Schemes and Higher Order Corrections
I apply commonly used regularization schemes to a multi-loop calculation to
examine the properties of the schemes at higher orders. I find complete
consistency between the conventional dimensional regularization scheme and
dimensional reduction, but I find that the four dimensional helicity scheme
produces incorrect results at next-to-next-to-leading order and singular
results at next-to-next-to-next-to-leading order. It is not, therefore, a

The Four Dimensional Helicity Scheme Beyond One Loop
I describe a procedure by which one can transform scattering amplitudes
computed in the four dimensional helicity scheme into properly renormalized
amplitudes in the 't Hooft-Veltman scheme. I describe a new renormalization
program, based upon that of the dimensional reduction scheme and explain how to
remove both finite and infrared-singular contributions of the evanescent
degrees of freedom to the scattering amplitude.Comment: 20 page
Naive time-reversal odd phenomena in semi-inclusive deep-inelastic scattering from light-cone constituent quark models
We present results for leading-twist azimuthal asymmetries in semi-inclusive
lepton-nucleon deep-inelastic scattering due to naively time-reversal odd
transverse-momentum dependent parton distribution functions from the light-cone
constituent quark model. We carefully discuss the range of applicability of the
model, especially with regard to positivity constraints and evolution effects.
We find good agreement with available experimental data from COMPASS and
HERMES, and present predictions to be tested in forthcoming experiments at

The space-time structure of hard scattering processes
Recent studies of exclusive electroproduction of vector mesons at JLab make
it possible for the first time to play with two independent hard scales: the
virtuality Q^2 of the photon, which sets the observation scale, and the
momentum transfer t to the hadronic system, which sets the interaction scale.
They reinforce the description of hard scattering processes in terms of few
effective degrees of freedom relevant to the Jlab-Hermes energy range.Comment: 4 pages; 5 figure
Two-Loop Virtual Corrections to Drell-Yan Production at order alpha_s alpha^3
The Drell-Yan mechanism for the production of lepton pairs is one of the most
basic processes for physics studies at hadron colliders. It is therefore
important to have accurate theoretical predictions. In this work we compute the
two-loop virtual mixed QCD x QED corrections to Drell-Yan production. We
evaluate the Feynman diagrams by decomposing the amplitudes into a set of known
master integrals and their coefficients, which allows us to derive an
analytical result. We also perform a detailed study of the ultraviolet and
infrared structure of the two-loop amplitude and the corresponding poles in

Uncovering anorexia nervosa in a biofeedback clinic for bowel dysfunction
Biofeedback is a conservative treatment based on behavioural techniques, which can be used in the management of bowel dysfunction. This article reports the results of a retrospective review of the clinical notes of 87 female patients attending a biofeedback service at St Mark's Hospital, Harrow. The initial review was conducted to examine the incidence of polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) in patients attending this service. Seven percent were found to have PCOS, which is within the normal range. However, a significant proportion of patients (11.5%) had a current history of anorexia nervosa, a higher rate than in the general population, which prompted further investigation. In this article, Sonya Chelvanayagam, Julie Duncan, Brigitte Collins and Lorraine O'Brien report on the results of this review and discuss the significance of its findings. © Copyright Terms & conditions
Relative distributions of W's and Z's at low transverse momenta
Despite large uncertainties in the and transverse momentum
() distributions for q_T\lsim 10 GeV, the ratio of the distributions
varys little. The uncertainty in the ratio of to distributions is
on the order of a few percent, independent of the details of the

Stable Isotropic Cosmological Singularities in Quadratic Gravity
We show that, in quadratic lagrangian theories of gravity, isotropic
cosmological singularities are stable to the presence of small scalar, vector
and tensor inhomogeneities. Unlike in general relativity, a particular exact
isotropic solution is shown to be the stable attractor on approach to the
initial cosmological singularity. This solution is also known to act as an
attractor in Bianchi universes of types I, II and IX, and the results of this
paper reinforce the hypothesis that small inhomogeneous and anisotropic
perturbations of this attractor form part of the general cosmological solution
to the field equations of quadratic gravity. Implications for the existence of
a 'gravitational entropy' are also discussed.Comment: 18 pages, no figure
Inelastic final-state interaction
The final-state interaction in multichannel decay processes is sytematically
studied with application to B decay in mind. Since the final-state inteaction
is intrinsically interwoven with the decay interaction in this case, no simple
phase theorem like "Watson's theorem" holds for experimentally observed final
states. We first examine in detail the two-channel problem as a toy-model to
clarify the issues and to remedy common mistakes made in earlier literature.
Realistic multichannel problems are too challenging for quantitative analysis.
To cope with mathematical complexity, we introduce a method of approximation
that is applicable to the case where one prominant inelastic channel dominates
over all others. We illustrate this approximation method in the amplitude of
the decay B to pi K fed by the intermediate states of a charmed meson pair.
Even with our approximation we need more accurate information of strong
interactions than we have now. Nonethless we are able to obtain some insight in
the issue and draw useful conclusions on general fearyres on the strong phases.Comment: The published version. One figure correcte
