The neurons that mistook a hat for a face
Despite evidence that context promotes the visual recognition of objects, decades of research have led to the pervasive notion that the object processing pathway in primate cortex consists of multiple areas that each process the intrinsic features of a few particular categories (e.g. faces, bodies, hands, objects, and scenes). Here we report that such category-selective neurons do not in fact code individual categories in isolation but are also sensitive to object relationships that reflect statistical regularities of the experienced environment. We show by direct neuronal recording that face-selective neurons respond not just to an image of a face, but also to parts of an image where contextual cues-for example a body-indicate a face ought to be, even if what is there is not a face

Dual mTOR/PI3K inhibition limits PI3K-dependent pathways activated upon mTOR inhibition in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease
Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is characterized by the development of kidney cysts leading to kidney failure in adulthood. Inhibition of mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) slows polycystic kidney disease (PKD) progression in animal models, but randomized controlled trials failed to prove efficacy of mTOR inhibitor treatment. Here, we demonstrate that treatment with mTOR inhibitors result in the removal of negative feedback loops and up-regulates pro-proliferative phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)-Akt and PI3K-extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK) signaling in rat and mouse PKD models. Dual mTOR/PI3K inhibition with NVP-BEZ235 abrogated these pro-proliferative signals and normalized kidney morphology and function by blocking proliferation and fibrosis. Our findings suggest that multi-target PI3K/mTOR inhibition may represent a potential treatment for ADPKD

Electrophysiological Low-Frequency Coherence and Cross-Frequency Coupling Contribute to BOLD Connectivity
SummaryBrain networks are commonly defined using correlations between blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) signals in different brain areas. Although evidence suggests that gamma-band (30–100 Hz) neural activity contributes to local BOLD signals, the neural basis of interareal BOLD correlations is unclear. We first defined a visual network in monkeys based on converging evidence from interareal BOLD correlations during a fixation task, task-free state, and anesthesia, and then simultaneously recorded local field potentials (LFPs) from the same four network areas in the task-free state. Low-frequency oscillations (<20 Hz), and not gamma activity, predominantly contributed to interareal BOLD correlations. The low-frequency oscillations also influenced local processing by modulating gamma activity within individual areas. We suggest that such cross-frequency coupling links local BOLD signals to BOLD correlations across distributed networks
