Production, bleaching and characterization of pulp from Stipa tenacissima

    Get PDF
Alfa grass pulping was successfully performed in hydro-organic acid medium under mild conditions (107°C, atmospheric pressure, cooking time: 3 h). Use of an acetic acid/formic acid/water mixture as pulping liquor was perfectly suitable for selective isolation of pulp, lignin, and hemicelluloses. The unbleached pulp obtained in good yield was first delignified by peroxyacids in organic acid medium and then bleached with hydrogen peroxide in a basic medium to give pulp offering good physico-chemical and mechanical characteristics

Inhibitors of retrograde trafficking active against ricin and Shiga toxins also protect cells from several viruses, Chlamydiales and Leishmania

Medical countermeasures to treat biothreat agent infections require broad-spectrum therapeutics that do not induce agent resistance. A cell-based high-throughput screen (HTS) against ricin toxin combined with hit optimization allowed selection of a family of compounds that meet these requirements. The hit compound Retro-2 and its derivatives have been demonstrated to be safe in vivo in mice even at high doses. Moreover, Retro-2 is an inhibitor of retrograde transport that affects syntaxin-5- dependent toxins and pathogens. As a consequence, it has a broad-spectrum activity that has been demonstrated both in vitro and in vivo against ricin, Shiga toxin-producing O104:H4 enterohemorrhagic E. coli and Leishmania sp. and in vitro against Ebola, Marburg and poxviruses and Chlamydiales. An effect is anticipated on other toxins or pathogens that use retrograde trafficking and syntaxin-5. Since Retro-2 targets cell components of the host and not directly the pathogen, no selection of resistant pathogens is expected. These lead compounds need now to be developed as drugs for human use

On the Impact of Blockchain Technology on Business Models and Supply Chain Management

Digitalization is changing the way companies create value. It is an umbrella term for diverse applications of digital technologies to processes inside companies and along the value chain. This research aims at understanding how literature has addressed the impact of blockchain technology on business models (BM) and supply chains. The study is based on a simple framework assuming that blockchain technology can affect BM directly, but also indirectly via supply chain management (SCM). Thus, three types of relationships are studied: i) the impact of blockchain on BMs, ii) the impact of blockchain on SCM, and iii) the impact of blockchain on BMs via SCM. To this aim, a systematic literature review is conducted using the Web of Science and Scopus databases. The selected 78 relevant articles are analyzed both by descriptive and content analysis. Results show that blockchain technology can affect BMs either generically or in specific industries, while it affects SCM on the dimensions of 1) efficiency and process improvement, 2) transparency and traceability, 3) sustainable SCM, and 4) supply chain collaboration. The indirectly impact of blockchain on BMs via SCM act on the dimensions of 1) supply chain transparency, 2) supply chain restructuring and 3) supply chain collaboration. This paper concludes with a research agenda discussing the open research questions before blockchain can achieve wide adoption in practice

Médinas 2030: Scénarios et stratégies (sous la dir.), L’Harmattan, Paris, 2009

The countries of the southern Mediterranean enjoy a rich and diverse cultural heritage. At the heart of this heritage lie the medinas – the historic city centres, often dating back to medieval times. A source of pride and collective belonging, they have nevertheless been subject to neglect and decay under the combined pressures of demographic growth, urbanization and modernization. Even though the cultural heritage value of these historic city centres is now widely recognised, no coherent rehabilitation policy is being implemented. Nevertheless, the medina is unquestionably a common good that must be preserved; more than that, it is an asset and a potential lever for the city and its inhabitants as a whole. All rehabilitation strategies and changes that need to be introduced have to be thoughtfully governed so as to preserve the historic and cultural values the medina symbolises and presents, not to the benefit of a small minority of privileged, but of the whole urban community, residents as well as visitors
