Hybrid Atom--Photon Quantum Gate in a Superconducting Microwave Resonator
We propose a novel hybrid quantum gate between an atom and a microwave photon
in a superconducting coplanar waveguide cavity by exploiting the strong
resonant microwave coupling between adjacent Rydberg states. Using
experimentally achievable parameters gate fidelities are possible on
sub-s timescales for waveguide temperatures below 40 mK. This provides a
mechanism for generating entanglement between two disparate quantum systems and
represents an important step in the creation of a hybrid quantum interface
applicable for both quantum simulation and quantum information processing.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Optimized Coplanar Waveguide Resonators for a Superconductor-Atom Interface
We describe the design and characterization of superconducting coplanar
waveguide cavities tailored to facilitate strong coupling between
superconducting quantum circuits and single trapped Rydberg atoms. For initial
superconductor-atom experiments at 4.2 K, we show that resonator quality
factors above can be readily achieved. Furthermore, we demonstrate that
the incorporation of thick-film copper electrodes at a voltage antinode of the
resonator provides a route to enhance the zero-point electric fields of the
resonator in a trapping region that is 40 m above the chip surface,
thereby minimizing chip heating from scattered trap light. The combination of
high resonator quality factor and strong electric dipole coupling between the
resonator and the atom should make it possible to achieve the strong coupling
limit of cavity quantum electrodynamics with this system.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Patterns of gene expression in schistosomes: localization by whole mount in situ hybridization
rom the identification of genes to the characterization of their functions and interactions. Developmental biologists have long used whole mount in situ hybridization (WISH) to determine gene expression patterns, as a vital tool for formulating and testing hypotheses about function. This paper describes the application of WISH to the study of gene expression in larval and adult schistosomes. Fixed worms were permeablized by proteinase K treatment for hybridization with digoxygenin-labelled RNA probes, with binding being detected by alkaline phosphatase-coupled anti-digoxygenin antibodies, and BM Purple substrate. Discrete staining patterns for the transcripts of the molecules Sm29, cathepsin L, antigen 10.3 and chorion were observed in the tegument cell bodies, gut epithelium, oesophageal gland and vitelline lobules, respectively, of adult worms. Transcripts of the molecules SGTP4, GP18-22 and cathepsin L were localized to tegument cell bodies and embryonic gut, respectively, of lung schistosomula. We also showed that Fast Red TR fluorescent substrate can refine the pattern of localization permitting use of confocal microscopy. We believe that method of WISH will find broad application, in synergy with other emerging post-genomic techniques, such as RNA interference, to studies focused at increasing our molecular understanding of schistosomes
Highly selective hydrogenation of furfural over supported Pt nanoparticles under mild conditions
The selective liquid phase hydrogenation of furfural to furfuryl alcohol over Pt nanoparticles supported on SiO₂, ZnO, γ-Al2O₃, CeO₂ is reported under extremely mild conditions. Ambient hydrogen pressure, and temperatures as low as 50 °C are shown sufficient to drive furfural hydrogenation with high conversion and >99% selectivity to furfuryl alcohol. Strong support and solvent dependencies are observed, with methanol and n-butanol proving excellent solvents for promoting high furfuryl alcohol yields over uniformly dispersed 4 nm Pt nanoparticles over MgO, CeO₂ and γ-Al₂O₃. In contrast, non-polar solvents conferred poor furfural conversion, while ethanol favored acetal by-product formation. Ab initio calculations of the hydrogen bond
Recent x-ray Compton scattering experiments in ice have provided useful
information about the quantum nature of the interaction between HO
monomers. The hydrogen bond is characterized by a certain amount of charge
transfer which could be determined in a Compton experiment. We use ab-initio
simulations to investigate the hydrogen bond in HO structures by
calculating the Compton profile and related quantities in three different
systems, namely the water dimer, a cluster containing 12 water molecules and
the ice crystal. We show how to extract estimates of the charge transfer from

Knowledge Cartography for Controversies: The Iraq Debate
In analysing controversies and debates—which would include reviewing a literature in order to plan research, or assessing intelligence to formulate policy—there is no one worldview which can be mapped, for instance as a single, coherent concept map. The cartographic challenge is to show which facts are agreed and contested, and the different kinds of narrative links that use facts as evidence to define the nature of the problem, what to do about it, and why. We will use the debate around the invasion of Iraq to demonstrate the methodology of using a knowledge mapping tool to extract key ideas from source materials, in order to classify and connect them within and across a set of perspectives of interest to the analyst. We reflect on the value that this approach adds, and how it relates to other argument mapping approaches

Medical students as global citizens: a qualitative study of medical students' views on global health teaching within the undergraduate medical curriculum
Background: There is increasing interest in global health teaching among medical schools and their students. Schools in the UK and internationally are considering the best structure, methods and content of global health courses. Academic work in this area, however, has tended to either be normative (specifying what global health teaching ought to look like) or descriptive (of a particular intervention, new module, elective, etc.).
Methods: While a number of studies have explored student perspectives on global health teaching, these have often relied on tools such as questionnaires that generate little in-depth evidence. This study instead used qualitative methods to explore medical student perspectives on global health in the context of a new global health module established in the core medical curriculum at a UK medical school.
Results: Fifth year medical students participated in a structured focus group session and semi-structured interviews designed to explore their knowledge and learning about global health issues, as well as their wider perspectives on these issues and their relevance to professional development. While perspectives on global health ranged from global health ‘advocate’ to ‘sceptic’, all of the students acknowledged the challenges of prioritising global health within a busy curriculum.
Conclusions: Students are highly alert to the diverse epistemological issues that underpin global health. For some students, such interdisciplinarity is fundamental to understanding contemporary health and healthcare. For others, global health is merely a topic of geographic relevance. Furthermore, some students appeared to accept global health as a specialist area only relevant to professionals working overseas, while others considered it to be an essential part of working in the globalised world and therefore relevant to all medical professionals. Students also clearly noted that including ‘soft’ subjects and more discursive approaches to teaching and learning often sits awkwardly in a programme where ‘harder’ forms of knowledge and didactic methods tend to dominate. This suggests that more work needs to be done to explain the relevance of global health to medical students at the very beginning of their studies
