    Hall conductance of a pinned vortex lattice in a high magnetic field

    We calculate the quasiparticle contribution to the zero temperature Hall conductance of two-dimensional extreme type-II superconductors in a high magnetic field, using the Landau basis. As one enters the superconducting phase the Hall conductance is renormalized to smaller values, with respect to the normal state result, until a quantum level-crossing transition is reached. At high values of the order parameter, where the quasiparticles are bound to the vortex cores, the Hall conductance is expected to tend to zero due to a theorem of Thouless.Comment: To appear in Journ.     Multidimensional Bosonization

    Bosonization of degenerate fermions yields insight both into Landau Fermi liquids, and into non-Fermi liquids. We begin our review with a pedagogical introduction to bosonization, emphasizing its applicability in spatial dimensions greater than one. After a brief historical overview, we present the essentials of the method. Well known results of Landau theory are recovered, demonstrating that this new tool of many-body theory is robust. Limits of multidimensional bosonization are tested by considering several examples of non-Fermi liquids, in particular the composite fermion theory of the half-filled Landau level. Nested Fermi surfaces present a different challenge, and these may be relevant in the cuprate superconductors.     The metric on the moduli space of charge (2,1) SU(3) Bogomolny-Prasad-Sommerfield monopoles is calculated and investigated. The hyperKahler quotient construction is used to provide an alternative derivation of the metric. Various properties of the metric are derived using the hyperKahler quotient construction and the correspondence between BPS monopoles and rational maps.     Effects of cytotoxic agents on TdR incorporation and growth delay in human colonic tumour xenografts.

    The relationship between the utilization of 3H-thymidine in situ ([3H]-TdR fractional incorporation or TFI) and tumour growth delay after treatment with various cytotoxic agents has been examined. It is shown that (a) it is not possible to predict tumour growth delay, or to select the most effective agent, from changes in TFI 1 day after treatment; (b) there is a good correlation between tumour growth delay and the time for recovery of TFI to the pretreatment level; (c) there is a relationship within a tumour line between the depression of TFI 4 days after treatment and growth dealy induced by the same treatment. This relationship appears to be independent of the mechanism by which the agent exerts its cytotoxic effect

    By explicit construction of the ADHM data, we prove the existence of a charge seven instanton with icosahedral symmetry. By computing the holonomy of this instanton we obtain a Skyrme field which approximates the minimal energy charge seven Skyrmion. We also present a one parameter family of tetrahedrally symmetric instantons whose holonomy gives a family of Skyrme fields which models a Skyrmion scattering process, where seven well-separated Skyrmions collide to form the icosahedrally symmetric Skyrmion.Comment: 22 pages plus 1 figure in GIF forma

    We present candidates for the global minimum energy solitons of charge one to nine in the Skyrme model, generated using sophisticated numerical algorithms. Assuming the Skyrme model accurately represents the low energy limit of QCD, these configurations correspond to the classical nuclear ground states of the light elements. The solitons found are particularly symmetric, for example, the charge seven skyrmion has icosahedral symmetry, and the shapes are shown to fit a remarkable sequence defined by a geometric energy minimization (GEM) rule. We also calculate the energies and sizes to within at least a few percent accuracy. These calculations provide the basis for a future investigation of the low energy vibrational modes of skyrmions and hence the possibility of testing the Skyrme model against experiment.Comment: latex, 9 pages, 1 figure (fig1.gif

    Hall Effect in the mixed state of moderately clean superconductors

    The Hall conductivity in the mixed state of a clean (lξ0l \gg \xi_0) type-II s-wave superconductor is determined from a microscopic calculation within a quasiclassical approximation. We find that below the superconducting transition the contribution to the transverse conductivity due to dynamical fluctuations of the order parameter is compensated by the modification of the quasiparticle contribution. In this regime the nonlinear behaviour of the Hall angle is governed by the change in the effective quasiparticle scattering rate due to the reduction in the density of states at the Fermi level.
