    Evidence for "Propeller" Effects In X-ray Pulsars GX 1+4 And GROJ1744-28

    We present observational evidence for "propeller" effects in two X-ray pulsars, GX 1+4 and GROJ1744-28. Both sources were monitored regularly by the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) throughout a decaying period in the X-ray brightness. Quite remarkably, strong X-ray pulsation became unmeasurable when total X-ray flux had dropped below a certain threshold. Such a phenomenon is a clear indication of the propeller effects which take place when pulsar magnetosphere grows beyond the co-rotation radius as a result of the decrease in mass accretion rate and centrifugal force prevents accreting matter from reaching the magnetic poles. The entire process should simply reverse as the accretion rate increases. Indeed, steady X-ray pulsation was reestablished as the sources emerged from the non-pulsating faint state. These data allow us to directly derive the surface polar magnetic field strength for both pulsars: 3.1E+13 G for GX 1+4 and 2.4E+11 G for GROJ1744-28. The results are likely to be accurate to within a factor of 2, with the total uncertainty dominated by the uncertainty in estimating the distances to the sources. Possible mechanisms for the persistent emission observed in the faint state are discussed in light of the extreme magnetic properties of the sources.Comment: 12 pages including 3 ps figures.     Nonlinear dynamics of a cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate coupled with a single cavity mode

    We investigate the nonlinear dynamics of a combined system which is composed of a cigar-shaped Bose-Einstein condensate and an optical cavity. The two sides couple dispersively. This system is characterized by its nonlinearity: after integrating out the freedom of the cavity mode, the potential felt by the condensate depends on the condensate itself. We develop a discrete-mode approximation for the condensate. Based on this approximation, we map out the steady configurations of the system. It is found that due to the nonlinearity of the system, the nonlinear levels of the system can fold up in some parameter regimes. That will lead to the breakdown of adiabaticity. Analysis of the dynamical stability of the steady states indicates that the same level structure also results in optical bistability.Comment: 8 pages, 5 figure

    Experimental results of a miniature two-stage Stirling cryocooler are introduced. The influence of filling gas pressure and refrigeration temperature on the refrigerating capacity along with the relationship between parameters was measured. The valley pressure corresponding to the lowest refrigeration temperature and the cooldown time versus operating pressure are discussed. The coefficient of performance and thermodynamic efficiency of the cryocooler are calculated based on experimental data

    Characterisation of a simple 'hanging bag' photobioreactor for low-cost cultivation of microalgae

    BACKGROUND: Microalgae are a diverse group of photosynthetic microorganisms of significant interest to the biotechnology industry, either as a sustainable source of natural compounds, or as light-driven cell factories to produce recombinant metabolites and proteins. Their ability to utilise light, CO2, and basic nutrients leads to a simple and low-cost phototrophic cultivation process. This is particularly relevant to low- and middle-income countries, all of which require a cultivation system that is cheap, technically simple to operate, readily scalable, and can meet basic Good Manufacturing Practice requirements. A disposable ‘hanging bag’-type photobioreactor operated as a bubble column fits these criteria. RESULTS: In this study, the characterisation and design modifications to improve the performance of a 15 L hanging bag is reported. The bubble behaviour using different sparger designs was investigated together with gas hold-up, mixing time, and mass transfer coefficient of CO2. A gas flow rate of 5 L min−1 using a new sparger design and a modified height-to-diameter ratio of the bag led to a two-fold improvement in algal biomass productivity when culturing the green microalga Chlorella sorokiniana. The cultivation of a luciferase-expressing Chlamydomonas reinhardtii strain in the modified hanging bag also demonstrated an 11% increase in luciferase content. CONCLUSION: This is the first attempt to characterise this simple hanging bag system that brings the industry-favoured single-use bag concept into the research field of photobioreactor technology. The hanging bag with modified sparger and dimensions improves microalgal biomass productivity and demonstrates the potential of simple and low-cost systems for microalgal cultivation. © 2021 The Authors.     Cessation of X-ray Pulsation of GX 1+4

    We report results from our weekly monitoring campaign on the X-ray pulsar GX 1+4 with the {\em Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer} satellite. The spin-down trend of GX 1+4 was continuing, with the pulsar being at its longest period ever measured (about 138.7 s). At the late stage of the campaign, the source entered an extended faint state, when its X-ray (2-60 keV) flux decreased significantly to an average level of ∼3×10−10ergscm−2s−1\sim 3 \times 10^{-10} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1}. It was highly variable in the faint state; the flux dropped to as low as ∼3×10−11ergscm−2s−1\sim 3 \times 10^{-11} ergs cm^{-2} s^{-1}. In several observations during this period, the X-ray pulsation became undetectable. We can, therefore, conclude conservatively that the pulsed fraction, which is normally ≳\gtrsim 70% (peak-to-peak), must have decreased drastically in those cases. This is very similar to what was observed of GX 1+4 in 1996 when it became similarly faint in X-ray. In fact, the flux at which the cessation of X-ray pulsation first occurred is nearly the same as it was in 1996.     Vector magnetic field sensing by single nitrogen vacancy center in diamond

    In this Letter, we proposed and experimentally demonstrated a method to detect vector magnetic field with a single nitrogen vacancy (NV) center in diamond. The magnetic field in parallel with the axis of the NV center can be obtained by detecting the electron Zeeman shift, while the Larmor precession of an ancillary nuclear spin close to the NV center can be used to measure the field perpendicular to the axis. Experimentally, both the Zeeman shift and Larmor precession can be measured through the fluorescence from the NV center. By applying additional calibrated magnetic fields, complete information of the vector magnetic field can be achieved with such a method. This vector magnetic field detection method is insensitive to temperature fluctuation and it can be applied to nanoscale magnetic measurement.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure

    Preview Tracking Control of Linear Periodic Switched Systems with Dwell Time

    This paper studies the preview tracking control problem for linear discrete-time periodic switched systems. Firstly, an augmented error system is constructed for each subsystem by stabilizing the augmented error systems through the method of optimal preview control, and the tracking problem of the switched system is transformed into the switched stability problem of closed-loop augmented error systems. Secondly, a switched Lyapunov function method is applied to search the minimal dwell time satisfying the switched stability of the closed-loop augmented error systems. Thirdly, the switched preview control input is solved from the controller of the individual augmented error system, and then the sufficient conditions and the preview controller can be obtained to guarantee the solvability of the original periodic switched preview tracking problem. Finally, numerical simulations show the effectiveness of the stabilization design method
