    Dipole formation at metal/PTCDA interfaces: Role of the Charge Neutrality Level

    The formation of a metal/PTCDA (3, 4, 9, 10-perylenetetracarboxylic dianhydride) interface barrier is analyzed using weak-chemisorption theory. The electronic structure of the uncoupled PTCDA molecule and of the metal surface is calculated. Then, the induced density of interface states is obtained as a function of these two electronic structures and the interaction between both systems. This induced density of states is found to be large enough (even if the metal/PTCDA interaction is weak) for the definition of a Charge Neutrality Level for PTCDA, located 2.45 eV above the highest occupied molecular orbital. We conclude that the metal/PTCDA interface molecular level alignment is due to the electrostatic dipole created by the charge transfer between the two solids.Comment: 6 page

    A DMRG Study of Low-Energy Excitations and Low-Temperature Properties of Alternating Spin Systems

    We use the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method to study the ground and low-lying excited states of three kinds of uniform and dimerized alternating spin chains. The DMRG procedure is also employed to obtain low-temperature thermodynamic properties of these systems. We consider a 2N site system with spins s1s_1 and s2s_2 alternating from site to site and interacting via a Heisenberg antiferromagnetic exchange. The three systems studied correspond to (s1,s2)(s_1 ,s_2 ) being equal to (1,1/2),(3/2,1/2)(1,1/2),(3/2,1/2) and (3/2,1)(3/2,1); all of them have very similar properties. The ground state is found to be ferrimagnetic with total spin sG=N(s1s2)s_G =N(s_1 - s_2). We find that there is a gapless excitation to a state with spin sG1s_G -1, and a gapped excitation to a state with spin sG+1s_G +1. Surprisingly, the correlation length in the ground state is found to be very small for this gapless system. The DMRG analysis shows that the chain is susceptible to a conditional spin-Peierls instability. Furthermore, our studies of the magnetization, magnetic susceptibility χ\chi and specific heat show strong magnetic-field dependences. The product χT\chi T shows a minimum as a function of temperature T at low magnetic fields; the minimum vanishes at high magnetic fields. This low-field behavior is in agreement with earlier experimental observations. The specific heat shows a maximum as a function of temperature, and the height of the maximum increases sharply at high magnetic fields. Although all the three systems show qualitatively similar behavior, there are some notable quantitative differences between the systems in which the site spin difference, s1s2|s_1 - s_2|, is large and small respectively.Comment: 16 LaTeX pages, 13 postscript figure

    A 10-Year Prospective Evaluation of Balloon Tube Tamponade and Emergency Injection Sclerotherapy for Actively Bleeding Oesophageal Varices

    During a 10 year study period 234 patients were admitted on 371 occasions with a total of 566 acute variceal bleeding episodes. Of these, 173 patients had 343 variceal bleeds which required balloon tamponade to achieve initial control of bleeding during 229 admissions and were then referred for emergency injection sclerotherapy. Sixty-eight percent of these patients had alcoholic cirrhosis and 42% were poor risk Grade C patients. Injection sclerotherapy was performed initially using the rigid Negus oesophagoscope under general anaesthesia and later using the fibreoptic endoscope under light sedation. Definitive control of variceal bleeding was achieved with sclerotherapy during 197 hospital admissions (92%). Of the 17 failures of emergency sclerotherapy, 4 patients died from uncontrolled bleeding and 13 patients underwent major surgical intervention. Definitive control of variceal bleeding was achieved with a single injection treatment in 138 hospital admissions (70%). Complications were mostly of a minor nature and occurred at a rate of 6% per injection treatment. The overall hospital admission mortality was 36%. The majority of patients died due to liver failure. The mortality in patients who required 4 injection treatments to control variceal bleeding was 71%. Injection sclerotherapy is proposed as the emergency treatment of choice for patients whose variceal bleeding continues or recurs after initial conservative management. Patients whose variceal bleeding is not controlled by 2 injection treatments require more major emergency surgery

    Snakebite: An Exploratory Cost-Effectiveness Analysis of Adjunct Treatment Strategies.

    The cost-effectiveness of the standard of care for snakebite treatment, antivenom, and supportive care has been established in various settings. In this study, based on data from South Indian private health-care providers, we address an additional question: "For what cost and effectiveness values would adding adjunct-based treatment strategies to the standard of care for venomous snakebites be cost-effective?" We modeled the cost and performance of potential interventions (e.g., pharmacologic or preventive) used adjunctively with antivenom and supportive care for the treatment of snakebite. Because these potential interventions are theoretical, we used a threshold cost-effectiveness approach to explore this forward-looking concept. We examined economic parameters at which these interventions could be cost-effective or even cost saving. A threshold analysis was used to examine the addition of new interventions to the standard of care. Incremental cost-effectiveness ratios were used to compare treatment strategies. One-way, scenario, and probabilistic sensitivity analyses were conducted to analyze parameter uncertainty and define cost and effectiveness thresholds. Our results suggest that even a 3% reduction in severe cases due to an adjunct strategy is likely to reduce the cost of overall treatment and have the greatest impact on cost-effectiveness. In this model, for example, an investment of 10ofinterventionthatreducestheincidenceofseverecasesby310 of intervention that reduces the incidence of severe cases by 3%, even without changing antivenom usage patterns, creates cost savings of 75 per individual. These findings illustrate the striking degree to which an adjunct intervention could improve patient outcomes and be cost-effective or even cost saving

    Evidence for the importance of resonance scattering in X-ray emission line profiles of the O star ζ\zeta Puppis

    We fit the Doppler profiles of the He-like triplet complexes of \ion{O}{7} and \ion{N}{6} in the X-ray spectrum of the O star ζ\zeta Puppis, using XMM-Newton RGS data collected over 400\sim 400 ks of exposure. We find that they cannot be well fit if the resonance and intercombination lines are constrained to have the same profile shape. However, a significantly better fit is achieved with a model incorporating the effects of resonance scattering, which causes the resonance line to become more symmetric than the intercombination line for a given characteristic continuum optical depth τ\tau_*. We discuss the plausibility of this hypothesis, as well as its significance for our understanding of Doppler profiles of X-ray emission lines in O stars.Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures, revised version accepted by Ap

    Non-Gaussian Radio-Wave Scattering in the Interstellar Medium

    It was recently suggested by Boldyrev & Gwinn that the characteristics of radio scintillations from distant pulsars are best understood if the interstellar electron-density fluctuations that cause the time broadening of the radio pulses obey non-Gaussian statistics. In this picture the density fluctuations are inferred to be strong on very small scales (1081010cm\sim 10^8-10^{10} {cm}). We argue that such density structures could correspond to the ionized boundaries of molecular regions (clouds) and demonstrate that the power-law distribution of scattering angles that is required to match the observations arises naturally from the expected intersections of our line of sight with randomly distributed, thin, approximately spherical ionized shells of this type. We show that the observed change in the time-broadening behavior for pulsar dispersion measures 30pccm3\lesssim 30 {\rm pc} {\rm cm}^{-3} is consistent with the expected effect of the general ISM turbulence, which should dominate the scattering for nearby pulsars. We also point out that if the clouds are ionized by nearby stars, then their boundaries may become turbulent on account of an ionization front instability. This turbulence could be an alternative cause of the inferred density structures.     Interaction between the MTHFR C677T polymorphism and traumatic childhood events predicts depression

    Childhood trauma is associated with the onset and recurrence of major depressive disorder (MDD). The thermolabile T variant of the methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T polymorphism (rs1801133) is associated with a limited (oxidative) stress defense. Therefore, C677T MTHFR could be a potential predictor for depressive symptomatology and MDD recurrence in the context of traumatic stress during early life. We investigated the interaction between the C677T MTHFR variant and exposure to traumatic childhood events (TCEs) on MDD recurrence during a 5.5-year follow-up in a discovery sample of 124 patients with recurrent MDD and, in an independent replication sample, on depressive syniptomatology in 665 healthy individuals from the general population. In the discovery sample, Cox regression analysis revealed a significant interaction between MTHFR genotype and TCEs on MOD recurrence (P = 0.017). Over the 5.5-year follow-up period, median time to recurrence was 191 days for T-allele carrying patients who experienced TCEs (T + and TCE +); 461 days for T - and TCE + patients; 773 days for T + and TCE - patients and 866 days for T - and TCE - patients. In the replication sample, a significant interaction was present between the MTHFR genotype and TCEs on depressive symptomatology (P = 0.002). Our results show that the effects of TCEs on the prospectively assessed recurrence of MOD and self-reported depressive symptoms in the general population depend on the MTHFR genotype. In conclusion, T-allele carriers may be at an increased risk for depressive symptoms or MOD recurrence after exposure to childhood trauma

    On the Largest Singular Values of Random Matrices with Independent Cauchy Entries

    We apply the method of determinants to study the distribution of the largest singular values of large m×n m \times n real rectangular random matrices with independent Cauchy entries. We show that statistical properties of the (rescaled by a factor of \frac{1}{m^2\*n^2})largest singular values agree in the limit with the statistics of the inhomogeneous Poisson random point process with the intensity 1πx3/2 \frac{1}{\pi} x^{-3/2} and, therefore, are different from the Tracy-Widom law. Among other corollaries of our method we show an interesting connection between the mathematical expectations of the determinants of complex rectangular m×n m \times n standard Wishart ensemble and real rectangular 2m×2n 2m \times 2n standard Wishart ensemble.Comment: We have shown in the revised version that the statistics of the largest eigenavlues of a sample covariance random matrix with i.i.d.     Digital Correlation of Ion and Optical Microscopic Images: Application to the Study of Thyroglobulin Chemical Modification

    A method has been developed in order to digitally correlate ion and optical microscopic images of the same sample areas. Serial cross-sections of human thyroid tissue were analyzed by secondary ion mass microscopy and by light microscopy. The resulting chemical and immunochemical map images were superimposed and correlated by means of a two-pass registration algorithm which allows to correct for geometrical distortions introduced by the ion microscope. Results are presented for the study of thyroglobulin chemical modification in pathological thyroid tissue that demonstrates heterogeneous molecular activity

    Anomalous Radio-Wave Scattering from Interstellar Plasma Structures

    This paper considers scattering screens that have arbitrary spatial variations of scattering strength transverse to the line of sight, including screens that are spatially well confined, such as disks and filaments. We calculate the scattered image of a point source and the observed pulse shape of a scattered impulse. The consequences of screen confinement include: (1) Source image shapes that are determined by the physical extent of the screen rather than by the shapes of much-smaller diffracting microirregularities. These include image elongations and orientations that are frequency dependent. (2) Variation with frequency of angular broadening that is much weaker than the trademark \nu^{-2} scaling law (for a cold, unmagnetized plasma), including frequency-independent cases; and (3) Similar departure of the pulse broadening time from the usually expected \nu^{-4} scaling law. We briefly discuss applications that include scattering of pulses from the Crab pulsar by filaments in the Crab Nebula; image asymmetries from Galactic scattering of the sources Cyg X-3, Sgr A*, and NGC 6334B; and scattering of background active galactic nuclei by intervening galaxies. We also address the consequences for inferences about the shape of the wavenumber spectrum of electron density irregularities, which depend on scaling laws for the image size and the pulse broadening. Future low-frequency (< 100 MHz) array observations will also be strongly affected by the Galactic structure of scattering material. Our formalism is derived in the context of radio scattering by plasma density fluctuations.
