Powell, Mike Zapp and Gert Biesta have examined what effects it has had on the submitting behaviour of institutions, considering the intended and unintended consequences in the field of education research. Findings reveal growing strategic behaviour, including high selectivity of submitted staff, the reinforcement of scientific norms with respect to the format and methodological orientation of submitted research outputs, and an explicit concentration of funding

    Free sugars in spelt wholemeal and flour

    Spelt (Triticum aestivum L. ssp. spelta) is experiencing a renaissance in Europe and North America, where it is used for baking, brewing, production of pasta, and self-supplied animal feed. One of the characteristics of spelt is that in comparison to modern wheat it is more resistant to harsh climatic and poor soil conditions. In contrast to wheat the hulls remain on the grain after threshing. Drawbacks are that spelt yields are quite low compared to modern wheat. The subject of the current study was to gain information about the composition of soluble sugars and their concentrations in spelt wholemeal and flour. High performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used for analysis. Concentrations of nine free sugars in spelt wholemeal and flour are reported. Flour cumulative free sugar concentrations were 63% lower than in wholemeal. For comparisons, we also analyzed wholemeal of wheat. The cumulative concentration of free sugars was 27% lower than in spelt wholemeal. However, when published data for sugar concentration ranges of wheat are taken into account, the total concentration of free sugar was not different between spelt and modern wheats. Low concentrations of xylose and stachyose were detected in spelt. Higher concentrations of fructans such as 1-kestose and kestotetraose were detected in spelt when compared with wheat. Generally, concentrations of free sugars in spelt were in the range of free sugar levels published for wheat, except for maltose which was higher in spelt

    Moving towards Mode 2? Evidence-based Policy-Making and the Changing Conditions for Educational Research in Germany

    The ‘Mode 2’ conceptual approach has become among the most widely applied to discuss changes in contemporary science and innovation systems. Operationalized, this approach suggests that contextualized, transdisciplinary, application-driven, reflexive, and high-quality scientific knowledge will be produced by an increasingly heterogeneous set of organizations, with universities no longer as dominant in knowledge production. Analyzing the case of educational research in Germany, which has undergone profound institutional and paradigmatic change since the turn of the century, allows us to ask to what extent the Mode 2 thesis holds. Considerable investments in ‘empirical’ educational research and the top-down setting of the research agenda have, we argue, fundamentally altered the research infrastructure of this increasingly diverse multidisciplinary field, challenging traditional humanities-based Pädagogik. Facilitated especially by waves of large-scale assessments of pupils’ school performance, the rapidly-growing ‘empirical’ educational research field is characterized by quantitative and policy-relevant (applied) knowledge claims. Finally, we identify risks associated with rapid and policy-induced shifts in educational research from Mode 1 to Mode 2

    Jet quenching pattern at LHC in PYQUEN model

    The first LHC data on high transverse momentum hadron and dijet spectra in PbPb collisions at center-of-mass energy 2.76 TeV per nucleon pair are analyzed in the frameworks of PYQUEN jet quenching model. The presented studies for the nuclear modification factor of high-pT hadrons and the imbalance in dijet transverse energy support the supposition that the intensive wide-angular ("out-of-cone") medium-induced partonic energy loss is seen in central PbPb collisions at the LHC.Comment: 5 pages including 4 figures as EPS-files; prepared using LaTeX package for publication in the European Physical Journal

    Transport Theoretical Description of Collisional Energy Loss in Infinite Quark-Gluon Matter

    We study the time evolution of a high-momentum gluon or quark propagating through an infinite, thermalized, partonic medium utilizing a Boltzmann equation approach. We calculate the collisional energy loss of the parton, study its temperature and flavor dependence as well as the the momentum broadening incurred through multiple interactions. Our transport calculations agree well with analytic calculations of collisional energy-loss where available, but offer the unique opportunity to address the medium response as well in a consistent fashion.Comment: 12 pages, updated with additional references and typos correcte

    Risk as a Driver for Innovation

    The Space Life Sciences directorate (SLSD) and Human Research Program (HRP) at NASA Johnson Space Center has implemented a system for managing human systems risks. These risks are defined as the health and performance risks posed to crew during and after spaceflight. Identification and evaluation of these risks has led to the identification of gaps in knowledge about the risks as well as gaps in technology needed to mitigate them. Traditional routes of closing technology gaps have, in some cases, proven to be too slow when a solution was required quickly. Therefore, certain gaps were used to drive the development of "challenges" for the scientific community. Partnering with open innovation service providers such as InnoCentive and Yet2.com, SLSD and HRP have decreased the amount of time from identification of a need to the evaluation of a solution. Although not all proposed solutions will result in a risk mitigation strategy or tool, the process has allowed faster evaluation of proposed solutions providing the researcher the ability to move to another possible solution if the first does not sufficiently address the problem. Moreover, this process engages the community outside of NASA and broadens the population from which to draw solutions. In the traditional grant funding structure, only those in the specific field will apply for the grant. However, using open innovation, solutions can come from individuals in many different fields. This can expand the general view of a field (way of thinking within a field) and the application of solutions form new fields while providing a pathway for the acquisition of novel solutions or refinements of current mitigations. Identification of the human systems risks has helped drive the development and evaluation of innovative solutions as well as engaging a broader scientific audience in working with NASA

    Space Weather Status for Exploration Radiation Protection

    Management of crew exposure to radiation is a major concern for manned spaceflight and will be even more important for the modern concept of longer-duration exploration. The inherent protection afforded to astronauts by the magnetic field of the Earth in Low Earth Orbit (LEO) makes operations on the space shuttle or space station very different from operations during an exploration mission. In order to experience significant radiation-derived Loss of Mission (LOM) or Loss of Crew (LOC) risk for LEO operations, one is almost driven to dictate extreme duration or to dictate an extreme sequence of solar activity. Outside of the geo-magnetosphere, however, this scenario changes dramatically. Exposures to the same event on the ISS and in free space, for example, may differ by orders of magnitude. This change in magnitude, coupled with the logistical constraints present in implementing any practical operational mitigation make situational awareness with regard to space weather a limiting factor for the ability to conduct exploration operations. We present a current status of developing operational concepts for manned exploration and expectations for asset viability and available predictive and characterization toolsets

    Dynamics, cation conformation and rotamers in guanidinium ionic liquids with ether groups

    Ionic liquids are modern materials with a broad range of applications, including electrochemical devices, the exploitation of sustainable resources and chemical processing. Expanding the chemical space to include novel ion classes allows for the elucidation of novel structure-property relationships and fine tuning for specific applications. We prepared a set of ionic liquids based on the sparsely investigated pentamethyl guanidinium cation with a 2-ethoxy-ethyl side chain in combination with a series of frequently used anions. The resulting properties are compared to a cation with a pentyl side chain lacking ether functionalization. We measured the thermal transitions and transport properties to estimate the performance and trends of this cation class. The samples with imide-type anions form liquids at ambient temperature, and show good transport properties, comparable to imidazolium or ammonium ionic liquids. Despite the dynamics being significantly accelerated, ether functionalization of the cation favors the formation of crystalline solids. Single crystal structure analysis, ab initio calculations and variable temperature nuclear magnetic resonance measurements (VT-NMR) revealed that cation conformations for the ether- and alkyl-chain-substituted are different in both the solid and liquid states. While ether containing cations adopt compact, curled structures, those with pentyl side chains are linear. The Eyring plot revealed that the curled conformation is accompanied by a higher activation energy for rotation around the carbon-nitrogen bonds, due to the coordination of the ether chain as observed by VT-NMR
