    Protecting the environment is not only the right thing to do, it is the smart thing to do, in terms of both short-term and long term business goals. Green businesses can realize immediate financial benefits from environmental sustainability and energy conservation, and there are branding benefits associated with developing and maintaining a reputation for integrity and social responsibility. All participants first answered demographic questions and then responded to a ten-item questionnaire, which was a modified version of Simpson’s (1998) environmental awareness questionnaire.     Chronic traumatic encephalopathy in contact sports: A systematic review of all reported pathological cases

    Š 2015 Maroon et al. Chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) is a neurodegenerative disease associated with head trauma. Although initially believed to affect only boxers, the at-risk population has expanded to encompass a much wider demographic, including American football players, hockey players, wrestlers, and military veterans. This expansion has garnered considerable media attention and public concern for the potential neurodegenerative effects of head trauma. The main aim of this systematic review is to give a complete overview of the common findings and risk factors for CTE as well as the status quo regarding the incidence and prevalence of CTE. This systematic review was performed using PubMed and MEDLINE and includes all neuropathologically confirmed cases of CTE in the medical literature to date, from the first published case in 1954 to August 1, 2013 (n = 153). The demographics, including the primary source of mTBI (mild Traumatic Brain Injury), age and cause of death, ApoE genotype, and history of substance abuse, when listed, were obtained from each case report. The demographics of American football players found to have CTE are also presented separately in order to highlight the most prevalent group of CTE cases reported in recent years. These 153 case reports of CTE represent the largest collection to date. We found that a history of mTBI was the only risk factor consistently associated with CTE. In addition, we found no relationships between CTE and age of death or abnormal ApoE allele. Suicide and the presence of premorbid dementia was not strongly associated with CTE. We conclude that the incidence of CTE remains unknown due to the lack of large, longitudinal studies. Furthermore, the neuropathological and clinical findings related to CTE overlap with many common neurodegenerative diseases. Our review reveals significant limitations of the current CTE case reporting and questions the widespread existence of CTE in contact sports

    The effectiveness of a trauma-focused psycho-educational secondary prevention program for children exposed to interparental violence: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial

    Background: Children who witness interparental violence are at a heightened risk for developing psychosocial, behavioral and cognitive problems, as well as posttraumatic stress symptoms. For these children the psycho-educational secondary prevention program 'En nu ik...!' ('It's my turn now!') has been developed. This program includes specific therapeutic factors focused on emotion awareness and expression, increasing feelings of emotional security, teaching specific coping strategies, developing a trauma narrative, improving parent-child interaction and psycho-education. The main study aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of the specific therapeutic factors in the program. A secondary objective is to study mediating and moderating factors. Methods/design: This study is a prospective multicenter randomized controlled trial across cities in the Netherlands. Participants (N = 140) are referred to the secondary preventive intervention program by police, social work, women shelters and youth (mental health) care. Children, aged 6-12 years, and their parents, who experienced interparental violence are randomly assigned to either the intervention program or the control program. The control program is comparable on nonspecific factors by offering positive attention, positive expectations, recreation, distraction, warmth and empathy of the therapist, and social support among group participants, in ways that are similar to the intervention program. Primary outcome measures are posttraumatic stress symptoms and emotional and behavioral problems of the child. Mediators tested are the ability to differentiate and express emotions, emotional security, coping strategies, feelings of guilt and parent-child interaction. Mental health of the parent, parenting stress, disturbances in parent-child attachment, duration and severity of the domestic violence and demographics are examined for their moderating effect. Data are collected one week before the program starts (T1), and one week (T2) and six months (T3) after finishing the program. Both intention-to-treat and completer analyses will be done. Discussion: Adverse outcomes after witnessing interparental violence are highly diverse and may be explained by multiple risk factors. An important question for prevention programs is therefore to what extent a specific focus on potential psychotrauma is useful. This trial may point to several directions for optimizing public health response to children's exposure to interparental violence

    Lactic Acid Extraction and Mass Transfer Characteristics in Slug Flow Capillary Microreactors

    Capillary microreactors operated under the slug flow regime were investigated for the separation of lactic acid from the aqueous phase using liquid–liquid reactive extraction. The experiments were performed at a 1:1 flow ratio of the aqueous to organic phases in a setup consisting of an inlet Y-type mixer connected with a poly(tetrafluoroethylene) capillary microreactor and subsequently an outlet Y-shape phase splitter. The extraction of lactic acid (intake: 0.11 and 0.055 M in water) using 15% (v/v) tri-n-octylamine in n-octanol under ambient conditions approached equilibrium after about 90 s in microreactors without noticeable emulsion formation. The measured reactive extraction performance in microreactors can be well described by a physical mass transfer model according to the penetration theory (developed from a model experimental study for the extraction of acetanilide from water to n-octanol) combined with an instantaneous irreversible reaction assumption

    Chemicals from lignin by diol-stabilized acidolysis:Reaction pathways and kinetics

    The product selectivity, production rates and the required process conditions are important for technology development. Selective lignin depolymerisation on the prime β-O-4 motif provides an opportunity to obtain valuable functionalized phenolic monomers. Diol-stabilized acidolysis of lignin with sulfuric acid, triflic acid or triflate salts is a proven β-O-4 cleavage methodology that forms acetals by trapping of released reactive aldehydes. For future scale-up, a better understanding of the prime reaction pathways and how these can be controlled upon changing reaction parameters is required. By using β-O-4 model compounds and ytterbium(iii) triflate as catalyst, starting material conversion and product formation including two key intermediates, the diol adducts (in this study, ethylene glycol as the diol) and the vinyl ethers, were accurately monitored, allowing for detailed kinetic modelling. Over the selected temperature range (80-150 °C), higher temperatures led to higher overall carbon balance and selectivity for the main desired acetal product. The kinetic modelling allowed for establishing a detailed reaction network with activation energies and rate constants. These collectively led to new insights into the key steps involved in the diol-stabilized β-O-4 motif acidolysis and how the reaction selectivity can be manipulated by controlling the reaction temperature, and the ethylene glycol and water content. The elucidation on reaction kinetics and networks constitutes a further step in the design of a diol-stabilized lignin acidolysis process

    An improved catalytic pyrolysis concept for renewable aromatics from biomass involving a recycling strategy for co-produced polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

    Catalytic pyrolysis of crude glycerol over a shaped H-ZSM-5 zeolite catalyst with (partial) recycling of the product oil was studied with the incentive to improve benzene, toluene, and xylene (BTX) yields. Recycling of the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) fraction, after separation from BTX by distillation and co-feeding with the crude glycerol feed, was shown to have a positive effect on the BTX yield. Further improvements were achieved by hydrogenation of the PAH fraction using a Ru/C catalyst and hydrogen gas prior to co-pyrolysis, and BTX yields up to 16 wt% on feed were obtained. The concept was also shown to be beneficial to other biomass feeds such as e.g., Kraft lignin, cellulose, and Jatropha oil
