    Radial Velocity Observations and Light Curve Noise Modeling Confirm That Kepler-91b is a Giant Planet Orbiting a Giant Star

    Kepler-91b is a rare example of a transiting hot Jupiter around a red giant star, providing the possibility to study the formation and composition of hot Jupiters under different conditions compared to main-sequence stars. However, the planetary nature of Kepler-91b, which was confirmed using phase-curve variations by Lillo-Box et al., was recently called into question based on a re-analysis of Kepler data. We have obtained ground-based radial velocity observations from the Hobby-Eberly Telescope and unambiguously confirm the planetary nature of Kepler-91b by simultaneously modeling the Kepler and radial velocity data. The star exhibits temporally correlated noise due to stellar granulation which we model as a Gaussian Process. We hypothesize that it is this noise component that led previous studies to suspect Kepler-91b to be a false positive. Our work confirms the conclusions presented by Lillo-Box et al. that Kepler-91b is a 0.73+/-0.13 Mjup planet orbiting a red giant star.Comment: Published in Ap

    Structured evaluation of virtual environments for special-needs education

    This paper describes the development of a structured approach to evaluate experiential and communication virtual learning environments (VLEs) designed specifically for use in the education of children with severe learning difficulties at the Shepherd special needs school in Nottingham, UK. Constructivist learning theory was used as a basis for the production of an evaluation framework, used to evaluate the design of three VLEs and how they were used by students with respect to this learning theory. From an observational field study of student-teacher pairs using the VLEs, 18 behaviour categories were identified as relevant to five of the seven constructivist principles defined by Jonassen (1994). Analysis of student-teacher behaviour was used to provide support for, or against, the constructivist principles. The results show that the three VLEs meet the constructivist principles in very different ways and recommendations for design modifications are put forward

    Lattice Resistance and Peierls Stress in Finite-size Atomistic Dislocation Simulations

    Atomistic computations of the Peierls stress in fcc metals are relatively scarce. By way of contrast, there are many more atomistic computations for bcc metals, as well as mixed discrete-continuum computations of the Peierls-Nabarro type for fcc metals. One of the reasons for this is the low Peierls stresses in fcc metals. Because atomistic computations of the Peierls stress take place in finite simulation cells, image forces caused by boundaries must either be relaxed or corrected for if system size independent results are to be obtained. One of the approaches that has been developed for treating such boundary forces is by computing them directly and subsequently subtracting their effects, as developed by V. B. Shenoy and R. Phillips [Phil. Mag. A, 76 (1997) 367]. That work was primarily analytic, and limited to screw dislocations and special symmetric geometries. We extend that work to edge and mixed dislocations, and to arbitrary two-dimensional geometries, through a numerical finite element computation. We also describe a method for estimating the boundary forces directly on the basis of atomistic calculations. We apply these methods to the numerical measurement of the Peierls stress and lattice resistance curves for a model aluminum (fcc) system using an embedded-atom potential.Comment: LaTeX 47 pages including 20 figure

    Finite Sized Atomistic Simulations of Screw Dislocations

    The interaction of screw dislocations with an applied stress is studied using atomistic simulations in conjunction with a continuum treatment of the role played by the far field boundary condition. A finite cell of atoms is used to consider the response of dislocations to an applied stress and this introduces an additional force on the dislocation due to the presence of the boundary. Continuum mechanics is used to calculate the boundary force which is subsequently accounted for in the equilibrium condition for the dislocation. Using this formulation, the lattice resistance curve and the associated Peierls stress are calculated for screw dislocations in several close packed metals. As a concrete example of the boundary force method, we compute the bow out of a pinned screw dislocation; the line-tension of the dislocation is calculated from the results of the atomistic simulations using a variational principle that explicitly accounts for the boundary force.Comment: LaTex, 20 pages, 11 figure

    First-principles envelope-function theory for lattice-matched semiconductor heterostructures

    In this paper a multi-band envelope-function Hamiltonian for lattice-matched semiconductor heterostructures is derived from first-principles norm-conserving pseudopotentials. The theory is applicable to isovalent or heterovalent heterostructures with macroscopically neutral interfaces and no spontaneous bulk polarization. The key assumption -- proved in earlier numerical studies -- is that the heterostructure can be treated as a weak perturbation with respect to some periodic reference crystal, with the nonlinear response small in comparison to the linear response. Quadratic response theory is then used in conjunction with k.p perturbation theory to develop a multi-band effective-mass Hamiltonian (for slowly varying envelope functions) in which all interface band-mixing effects are determined by the linear response. To within terms of the same order as the position dependence of the effective mass, the quadratic response contributes only a bulk band offset term and an interface dipole term, both of which are diagonal in the effective-mass Hamiltonian. Long-range multipole Coulomb fields arise in quantum wires or dots, but have no qualitative effect in two-dimensional systems beyond a dipole contribution to the band offsets.Comment: 25 pages, no figures, RevTeX4; v3: final published versio

    Low dislocation densities and long carrier lifetimes in GaN thin films grown on a SiNx nanonetwork

    Significant improvement of structural and optical qualities of GaNthin films on sapphire substrates was achieved by metal organic chemical vapor deposition with in situ SiNxnanonetwork. Transmission electron microscope (TEM) studies revealed that screw- and edge-type dislocations were reduced to 4.4×107 and 1.7×107cm−2, respectively, for a ∼5.5-μm-thick layer. Furthermore, room temperature carrier lifetimes of 2.22 and 2.49ns were measured by time-resolved photoluminescence(TRPL) for samples containing single and double SiNx network layers, respectively, representing a significant improvement over the previous studies. The consistent trends among the TEM,x-ray diffraction, and TRPL measurements suggest that in situ SiNx network reduces line defects effectively as well as the point-defect-related nonradiative centers

    Representation of Africa online: sourcing practice and frames of reference

    The dominant perspective on the representation of Africa in the western media claims that western media coverage is bias and crisis orientated and the liberal perspective claims that the coverage of Africa is not as negative as is often assumed. However, there is a paucity of literature on the representation of Africa online. This research enquiry is relevant because literature claims that the Internet has the potential to resolve the journalistic predicament of representing other culture through political participation and deliberation. But this requires a re-orientation of the sourcing practice of news organization to embrace sensitivity to and knowledge of African cultures. Moreover, the journalistic predicament can be resolved or not depending on the news gathering approach adopted by the news organization. Literature has identified two approaches, that is, ‘gatekeeping’ used mainly by dominant traditional media and ‘gatewatching’ used by alternative media in their quest to counter mainstream ideology. This study examines the impacts of the ‘gatewatching’ approach adopted by Africa Have Your Say (AHYS) website on its representation and frames of reference of Africa. It uses on-site observation, in-depth interviews and textual analysis to gather data. The study found that although the sourcing practice at the AHYS is elaborate and complex, the ‘gatewatching’ approach makes its susceptible to second level agenda setting. Hence, its frame repeats the attributes and tone used by the mainstream traditional media. However, a minority of users did not use repeat this frame in their comments
