Studying stellar binary systems with the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna using Delayed Rejection Markov chain Monte Carlo methods
Bayesian analysis of LISA data sets based on Markov chain Monte Carlo methods
has been shown to be a challenging problem, in part due to the complicated
structure of the likelihood function consisting of several isolated local
maxima that dramatically reduces the efficiency of the sampling techniques.
Here we introduce a new fully Markovian algorithm, a Delayed Rejection
Metropolis-Hastings Markov chain Monte Carlo method, to efficiently explore
these kind of structures and we demonstrate its performance on selected LISA
data sets containing a known number of stellar-mass binary signals embedded in
Gaussian stationary noise.Comment: 12 pages, 4 figures, accepted in CQG (GWDAW-13 proceedings
Discreteness-induced resonances and AC voltage amplitudes in long one-dimensional Josephson junction arrays
New resonance steps are found in the experimental current-voltage
characteristics of long, discrete, one-dimensional Josephson junction arrays
with open boundaries and in an external magnetic field. The junctions are
underdamped, connected in parallel, and DC biased. Numerical simulations based
on the discrete sine-Gordon model are carried out, and show that the solutions
on the steps are periodic trains of fluxons, phase-locked by a finite amplitude
radiation. Power spectra of the voltages consist of a small number of harmonic
peaks, which may be exploited for possible oscillator applications. The steps
form a family that can be numbered by the harmonic content of the radiation,
the first member corresponding to the Eck step. Discreteness of the arrays is
shown to be essential for appearance of the higher order steps. We use a
multi-mode extension of the harmonic balance analysis, and estimate the
resonance frequencies, the AC voltage amplitudes, and the theoretical limit on
the output power on the first two steps.Comment: REVTeX, 17 pages, 7 figures, psfig; to appear in J. Applied Physic
Negative ternary set-sharing
The Set-Sharing domain has been widely used to infer at compiletime interesting properties of logic programs such as occurs-check reduction, automatic parallelization, and flnite-tree analysis. However, performing abstract uniflcation in this domain requires a closure operation that increases the number of sharing groups exponentially. Much attention has been given to mitigating this key inefflciency in this otherwise very useful domain. In this paper we present a novel approach to Set-Sharing: we define a new representation that leverages the complement (or negative) sharing relationships of the original sharing set,
without loss of accuracy. Intuitively, given an abstract state sh\> over the finite set of variables of interest V, its negative representation is p(V) \ shy. Using this encoding during analysis dramatically reduces the number of elements that need to be represented in the abstract states and during abstract uniflcation as the cardinality of the original set grows toward 2 . To further compress the number
of elements, we express the set-sharing relationships through a set of ternary strings that compacts the representation by eliminating redundancies among the sharing sets. Our experiments show that our approach can compress the number of relationships, reducing signiflcantly the memory usage and running time of all
abstract operations, including abstract uniflcation

The S3PQR-model has the proper cubic near-wall behaviour and no intrinsic limitations for statistically inhomogeneous flows. In this work, the new model has been tested for an air turbulent Rayleigh-Benard convection in a rectangular cell of aspect ratio unity and n span-wise open-ended distance. To do so, direct numerical simulation has been carried out at two Rayleigh numbers Ra = 108 and 1010, to assess the model performance and investigate a priori the effect of the turbulent Prandtl number. Using an approximate formula based on the Taylor series expansion, the turbulent Prandtl number has been calculated and revealed a constant and Ra-independent value across the bulk region equals to 0.55. It is found that the turbulent components of eddy-viscosity and eddy-diffusivity are positively prevalent to maintain a turbulent wind essentially driven by the mean buoyant force at the sidewalls. On the other hand, the new eddy-viscosity model is preliminary tested for the case of Ra = 108 and showed overestimation of heat flux within the boundary layer but fairly good prediction of turbulent kinetics at this moderate turbulent flow.Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
