    Doxorubicin Removal from Water using Acid-treated Activated Carbon, Multi-walled Carbon Nanotubes, and Montmorillonite

    Medical wastewater is a significant contributor to environmental pollution, posing severe risks to both human health and the environment. To resolve this challenge, the removal of anti-cancer drugs from medical wastewater has been considered. This study investigated the removal of doxorubicin, an effective anti-cancer drug, from an aqueous solution using three types of adsorbents: activated carbon, multi-walled carbon nanotube, and montmorillonite. Our findings revealed that carbon nanotubes exhibited superior performance in doxorubicin removal from water compared to the other two adsorbents. Specifically, the maximum adsorption capacity of doxorubicin with an initial concentration of 50 mg L–1 on the carbon nanotube reached 500 mg g–1. In addition, surface modification of the adsorbents with acid resulted in a 15 % and 41 % increase in adsorption capacity, and an 85 % and 67 % reduction in equilibrium time for carbon nanotube and montmorillonite, respectively. The increasing pH proved to enhance the adsorption efficiency of carbon nanotubes and activated carbon, with the best performance achieved at solution pH of 10 and 8 for MWCNTs and AC, respectively

    Low diagnostic yield of sural nerve biopsy in patients with peripheral neuropathy and primary amyloidosis

    Patients with primary amyloidosis may develop peripheral neuropathy as an early feature. Sural nerve biopsy is reported to be a sensitive method for diagnosing amyloidosis in such patients. We identified nine patients, ultimately diagnosed as having amyloidosis, who were referred for peripheral neuropathy of undetermined etiology. In six, a sural nerve biopsy demonstrated no amyloid. Subsequent examination of other tissue or of the contralateral sural nerve eventually resulted in the correct diagnosis. We conclude that sural nerve biopsy may be less sensitive than previously believed for the diagnosis of amyloidosis in patients with peripheral neuropathy secondary to amyloid. When the clinical suspicion of amyloidosis is high, a nondiagnostic sural nerve biopsy should not discourage the performance of further investigative studies.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/30401/1/0000021.pd

    Executive summary: heart disease and stroke statistics--2014 update: a report from the American Heart Association.

    Each year, the American Heart Association (AHA), in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the National Institutes of Health, and other government agencies, brings together the most up-to-date statistics on heart disease, stroke, other vascular diseases, and their risk factors and presents them in its Heart Disease and Stroke Statistical Update. The Statistical Update is a critical resource for researchers, clinicians, healthcare policy makers, media professionals, the lay public, and many others who seek the best available national data on heart disease, stroke, and other cardiovascular disease-related morbidity and mortality and the risks, quality of care, use of medical procedures and operations, and costs associated with the management of these diseases in a single document. Indeed, since 1999, the Statistical Update has been cited >10 500 times in the literature, based on citations of all annual versions. In 2012 alone, the various Statistical Updates were cited ≈3500 times (data from Google Scholar). In recent years, the Statistical Update has undergone some major changes with the addition of new chapters and major updates across multiple areas, as well as increasing the number of ways to access and use the information assembled. For this year's edition, the Statistics Committee, which produces the document for the AHA, updated all of the current chapters with the most recent nationally representative data and inclusion of relevant articles from the literature over the past year. This year's edition includes a new chapter on peripheral artery disease, as well as new data on the monitoring and benefits of cardiovascular health in the population, with additional new focus on evidence-based approaches to changing behaviors, implementation strategies, and implications of the AHA's 2020 Impact Goals.
