    Biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles and its antibacterial activity using seaweed Urospora sp.

    In the present research work, biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles and its activity on bacterial pathogens were investigated. Silver nanoparticles were rapidly synthesized using Urospora sp. and the formation of nanoparticles was observed within 30 min. The results recorded from UV–vis spectrum, Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD) and High Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HRTEM) support the biosynthesis and characterization of silver nanoparticles. From HRTEM analysis, the size of the silver nanoparticles was measured 20 to 30 nm. Further, the antibacterial activity of synthesized silver nanoparticles showed effective inhibitory activity against the pathogens namely: Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa.Key words: Urospora sp, silver nanoparticles, biosynthesis, antibacterial activity

    On-stack replacement (OSR) is essential technology for adaptive optimization, allowing changes to code actively executing in a managed runtime. The engineering aspects of OSR are well-known among VM architects, with several implementations available to date. However, OSR is yet to be explored as a general means to transfer execution between related program versions, which can pave the road to unprecedented applications that stretch beyond VMs. We aim at filling this gap with a constructive and provably correct OSR framework, allowing a class of general-purpose transformation functions to yield a special-purpose replacement. We describe and evaluate an implementation of our technique in LLVM. As a novel application of OSR, we present a feasibility study on debugging of optimized code, showing how our techniques can be used to fix variables holding incorrect values at breakpoints due to optimizations

    Seasonal incidence, population dynamics and morphometric traits of exotic coconut whiteflies in southern Tamil Nadu

    Survey was conducted at fortnightly intervals to assess the intensity of damage caused by the invasive whiteflies in coconut in the southern districts of Tamil Nadu viz., Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Kanyakumari from December 2020 to August 2021. Among the four districts, Kanyakumari recorded the highest whitefly incidence (56.30%), whereas, Tenkasi showed the lowest infestation (48.83%). Two whitefly species viz., rugose spiralling whitefly, Aleurodicus rugioperculatus Martin and bondars nesting whitefly (BNW), Paraleyrodes bondari Peracchi were observed in all the surveyed districts. The rugose spiralling whitefly nymphs and adult populations were found to be highest in Kanyakumari (49.46 nymphs/leaflet; 36.99 adults/leaflet) and lowest in Tenkasi (32.76 nymphs/leaflet; 26.71 adults/leaflet). Similarly, the population of bondars nesting whitefly nymphs and adults were highest in Kanyakumari (35.31 nymphs/leaflet; 34.84 adults/leaflet), whereas, the lowest nymphal population was observed in Tenkasi (22.79 nymphs/leaflet) and adult population in Thoothukudi (24.19 adults/leaflet). In morphometric analysis, length and breadth of egg (0.24 ± 0.03 mm and 0.13± 0.02 mm), nymphal (0.83 ± 0.08 mm and 0.38 ± 0.04 mm), pupal (1.08 ± 0.09 mm and 0.70 ± 0.09 mm), adult (female: 2.59 ± 0.09mm, 1.71 ± 0.14 mm; male: 2.27 ± 0.21 mm, 1.30 ± 0.05 mm) was recorded for A. rugioperculatus and egg (0.15 ± 0.02 mm and 0.08 ± 0.01 mm), nymphal (0.46 ± 0.02 mm and 0.36 ± 0.02 mm), pupal (0.59 ± 0.16 mm and 0.41 ± 0.09 mm), adult (1.09 ± 0.08 mm and 0.73 ± 0.07 mm) for P. bondari

    Butterfly eyespots evolved via cooption of an ancestral gene-regulatory network that also patterns antennae, legs, and wings

    Butterfly eyespots are beautiful novel traits with an unknown developmental origin. Here we show that eyespots likely originated via cooption of parts of an ancestral appendage gene-regulatory network (GRN) to novel locations on the wing. Using comparative transcriptome analysis, we show that eyespots cluster most closely with antennae, relative to multiple other tissues. Furthermore, three genes essential for eyespot development, (), (), and (), share similar regulatory connections as those observed in the antennal GRN. CRISPR knockout of -regulatory elements (CREs) for and led to the loss of eyespots, antennae, legs, and also wings, demonstrating that these CREs are highly pleiotropic. We conclude that eyespots likely reused an ancient GRN for their development, a network also previously implicated in the development of antennae, legs, and wings

    Identification of pathogen genomic variants through an integrated pipeline

    Background: Whole-genome sequencing represents a powerful experimental tool for pathogen research. We present methods for the analysis of small eukaryotic genomes, including a streamlined system (called Platypus) for finding single nucleotide and copy number variants as well as recombination events. Results: We have validated our pipeline using four sets of Plasmodium falciparum drug resistant data containing 26 clones from 3D7 and Dd2 background strains, identifying an average of 11 single nucleotide variants per clone. We also identify 8 copy number variants with contributions to resistance, and report for the first time that all analyzed amplification events are in tandem. Conclusions: The Platypus pipeline provides malaria researchers with a powerful tool to analyze short read sequencing data. It provides an accurate way to detect SNVs using known software packages, and a novel methodology for detection of CNVs, though it does not currently support detection of small indels. We have validated that the pipeline detects known SNVs in a variety of samples while filtering out spurious data. We bundle the methods into a freely available package

    Studies on the Growth, Optical, Thermal and Physical Properties of an Efficient Second Order Nonlinear Optical Organic Crystal: 2-Amino-5-Chloropyridinium- Trifluoroacetate for Optoelectronic and Photonic Device Applications

    The novel organic single crystal 2-amino-5-chloropyridinium-trifluoroacetate (2A5CTFA) has been synthesized andgrown successfully using methanol as solvent by continuous slow evaporation technique. The X-ray diffraction resultsreveals that the crystal 2-amino-5-chloropyridinium-trifluoroacetate crystallizes into monoclinic crystal system with the noncentrosymmetricspace group Pc. The vibrational spectrum of the sample by FTIR and FT-RAMAN study confirms thecharacteristic functional groups of the 2A5CTFA crystal. The optical absorption spectrum shows 85% of transmittance inthe entire UV-Vis-NIR region with cut-off wavelength at 345 nm. The crystal has a thermal stability of 137° C without anymajor weight loss in the TG curve. The photoluminescence spectrum of the crystal has a prominent violet emission peakcentered at 388 nm. The dielectric behavior of the crystal measured with various frequencies at different temperaturesreveals the normal behavior for optical materials. The second order NLO effect from the crystal is confirmed by theemission of green signal from the crystal upon tested with the aid of Kurtz powder analysis using Nd:YAG laser. The laserinduced surface damage threshold value of the crystal is found to be 1.05 GW/cm2. Overall, the outlined properties of thegrown crystal makes it suitable for opto-electronic and nonlinear optical device applications
