    Loop expansion around the Bethe-Peierls approximation for lattice models

    We develop an effective field theory for lattice models, in which the only non-vanishing diagrams exactly reproduce the topology of the lattice. The Bethe-Peierls approximation appears naturally as the saddle point approximation. The corrections to the saddle-point result can be obtained systematically.     Kinetics of step bunching during growth: A minimal model

    We study a minimal stochastic model of step bunching during growth on a one-dimensional vicinal surface. The formation of bunches is controlled by the preferential attachment of atoms to descending steps (inverse Ehrlich-Schwoebel effect) and the ratio dd of the attachment rate to the terrace diffusion coefficient. For generic parameters (d>0d > 0) the model exhibits a very slow crossover to a nontrivial asymptotic coarsening exponent β0.38\beta \simeq 0.38. In the limit of infinitely fast terrace diffusion (d=0d=0) linear coarsening (β\beta = 1) is observed instead. The different coarsening behaviors are related to the fact that bunches attain a finite speed in the limit of large size when d=0d=0, whereas the speed vanishes with increasing size when d>0d > 0. For d=0d=0 an analytic description of the speed and profile of stationary bunches is developed.Comment: 8 pages, 10 figure

    Dynamic scaling and universality in evolution of fluctuating random networks

    We found that models of evolving random networks exhibit dynamic scaling similar to scaling of growing surfaces. It is demonstrated by numerical simulations of two variants of the model in which nodes are added as well as removed [Phys. Rev. Lett. 83, 5587 (1999)]. The averaged size and connectivity of the network increase as power-laws in early times but later saturate. Saturated values and times of saturation change with paramaters controlling the local evolution of the network topology. Both saturated values and times of saturation obey also power-law dependences on controlling parameters.     Eating disorder symptoms and control-seeking behavior

    OBJECTIVE: Eating disorders (EDs) are a heterogenous group of disorders characterized by disturbed eating patterns. Links have been made between ED symptoms and control-seeking behaviors, which may cause relief from distress. However, whether direct behavioral measures of control-seeking behavior correlate with ED symptoms has not been directly tested. Additionally, existing paradigms may conflate control-seeking behavior with uncertainty-reducing behavior. METHOD: A general population sample of 183 participants completed part in an online behavioral task, in which participants rolled a die in order to obtain/avoid a set of numbers. Prior to each roll, participants could choose to change arbitrary features of the task (such as the color of their die) or view additional information (such as the current trial number). Selecting these Control Options could cost participants points or not (Cost/No-Cost conditions). Each participant completed all four conditions, each with 15 trials, followed by a series of questionnaires, including the Eating Attitudes Test-26 (EAT-26), the Intolerance of Uncertainty Scale, and the Obsessive-Compulsive Inventory-Revised (OCI-R). RESULTS: A Spearman's rank test indicated no significant correlation between total EAT-26 score and total number of Control Options selected, with only elevated scores on a measure of obsessions and compulsivity (OCI-R) correlating with the total number of Control Options selected (rs  = .155, p = .036). DISCUSSION: In our novel paradigm, we find no relationship between EAT-26 score and control-seeking. However, we do find some evidence that this behavior may be present in other disorders that often coincide with ED diagnosis, which may indicate that transdiagnostic factors such as compulsivity are important to control-seeking

    Statistical properties of stock order books: empirical results and models

    We investigate several statistical properties of the order book of three liquid stocks of the Paris Bourse. The results are to a large degree independent of the stock studied. The most interesting features concern (i) the statistics of incoming limit order prices, which follows a power-law around the current price with a diverging mean; and (ii) the humped shape of the average order book, which can be quantitatively reproduced using a `zero intelligence' numerical model, and qualitatively predicted using a simple approximation.Comment: Revised version, 10 pages, 4 .eps figures. to appear in Quantitative Financ

    Aerosols: connection between regional climatic change and air quality (Iupac Technical Report)

    yAerosols play an important role in all problems connected with air pollution, ranging from very local effects and human health problems to regional problems such as acid deposition and eutrophication up to continental and global questions such as stratospheric ozone loss and climatic change. In this report, an explanation of these effects is given and an assessment is made for parts of China, based on the aerosol data given by Zhang et al. elsewhere in this volume. Epidemiological research has made clear that aerosols are a cause of enhanced mortality due to cardiopulmonary diseases (heart and lung diseases). Based on the same mortality as found in Europe and on linear extrapolation (with large uncertainties; no sufficient data are available to make better estimates), an excess mortality of 5000 to 10 000 due to acute effects and 20 000 to 50 000 due to chronic effects per year could be expected for a city like Beijing with a population of 14.5 million. A major cause of these uncertainties is problems in the determination of semivolatile compounds and elemental or black carbon in aerosols. Aerosols have a strong impact on the radiative balance of the earth, in a direct way by reflecting solar light as well as in an indirect way by cloud formation leading to clouds with higher albedo, which reflect sunlight better. The total direct effect, backscatter of sunlight, including backscatter from nitrates and organic compounds, is estimated to be approximately 2 to 3 W m(-2) for Western Europe, 2 while the indirect effect is approximately 0 to -6 W m(-2). Soot absorbs incoming solar radiation and heats the atmosphere. This process contributes 0.1 to 0.2 W m(-2) on a global scale. If PM-2.5 levels are compared with Europe, a direct effect of approximately -4 to -10 W m(-2) would be plausible for China, black carbon could contribute 2 probably about 0.5 to 2 W m(-2), and the indirect effect could be about 0 to -6 W m(-2). These effects could cause a net cooling over China (and over many developing countries in the same position) of about -4 to -15 W m(-2). This estimate is obviously based on many assumptions and hence is quite uncertain. One must be aware that measures reducing local aerosol concentrations will have a large impact on the radiative balance and could, over a few decades, have potentially at least the same impact as the build-up of greenhouse gases since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution

    Size-resolved aerosol water-soluble ionic compositions in the summer of Beijing: implication of regional secondary formation

    To characterize aerosol pollution in Beijing, size-resolved aerosols were collected by MOUDIs during CAREBEIJING-2006 field campaign at Peking University (urban site) and Yufa (upwind rural site). Fine particle concentrations (PM<sub>1.8</sub> by MOUDI) were 99.8±77.4 μg/m<sup>3</sup> and 78.2±58.4 μg/m<sup>3</sup>, with PM<sub>1.8</sub>/PM<sub>10</sub> ratios of 0.64±0.08 and 0.76±0.08 at PKU and Yufa, respectively, and secondary compounds accounted for more than 50% in fine particles. PMF model analysis was used to resolve the particle modes. Three modes were resolved at Yufa, representing condensation, droplet and coarse mode. However, one more droplet mode with bigger size was resolved, which was considered probably from regional transport. Condensation mode accounted for 10%–60% of the total mass at both sites, indicating that the gas-to-particle condensation process was important in summer. The formation of sulfate was mainly attributed to in-cloud or aerosol droplet process (PKU 80%, Yufa 70%) and gas condensation process (PKU 14%, Yufa 22%). According to the thermodynamic instability of NH<sub>4</sub>NO<sub>3</sub>, size distributions of nitrate were classified as three categories by RH. The existence of Ca(NO<sub>3</sub>)<sub>2</sub> in droplet mode indicated the reaction of HNO<sub>3</sub> with crustal particles was also important in fine particles. A rough estimation was given that 69% of the PM<sub>10</sub> and 87% of the PM<sub>1.8</sub> in Beijing urban were regional contributions. Sulfate, ammonium and oxalate were formed regionally, with the regional contributions of 90%, 87% and 95% to PM<sub>1.8</sub>. Nitrate formation was local dominant.     Interaction of molecular motors can enhance their efficiency

    Particles moving in oscillating potential with broken mirror symmetry are considered. We calculate their energetic efficiency, when acting as molecular motors carrying a load against external force. It is shown that interaction between particles enhances the efficiency in wide range of parameters. Possible consequences for artificial molecular motors are discussed.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figure
