A heterogeneidade da abordagem desta patologia e a dificuldade em reduzir o seu peso nos indices de saúde pública, vem motivando investigação contínua e legitimou a publicação recente (2006) pela Academia Americana de Pediatria (AAP) de normas de actuação, chamando-se a atenção para os resultados de uma metanálise realizada pela Cochrane Collaboration e para a existência de diversos fenotipos de apresentação c1ínica.Os autores abordam alguns aspectos epidemiológicos, c1ínicos (nomeadamente as complicações) e, sobretudo, de terapêutica, com base em estudos recentes, elaborando uma proposta concretade actuação

    Postinfectious Anti-Myelin Oligodendrocyte Glycoprotein Antibody Positive Optic Neuritis and Myelitis

    We report the case of a 9-year-old girl admitted with fever, headache, and a cerebrospinal fluid lymphocytic pleocytosis. Polymerase chain reaction was positive for human herpes virus 6. She subsequently developed ataxia and bilateral loss of vision. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed bilateral optic nerve lesions with extension to optic chiasm and a short-segment myelitis. Serologic studies were positive for Borrelia burgdorferi IgM. Anti-aquaporin 4 antibody was negative and anti-myelin oligodendrocyte glycoprotein antibody (MOG) positive. After intravenous methylprednisolone, ceftriaxone, and intravenous immunoglobulin, her vision slowly recovered. The patient was discharged with only mild visual acuity loss, 1 month after admission. Brain MRI was repeated later and was normal and MOG assay became negative.     Buyer-seller conflict and cooperation in marketing channels: port wine distribution

    The main purpose of this study is to research buyer-seller conflict and cooperation in distribution channels. Based on a multidimensional case study, eight research hypotheses were formulated. Some quantitative research was conducted, based on a questionnaire sent to 101 port wine producers and distribution companies (61 answered properly – 31 producers and 29 distributors – which gave the authors a 60% rate of response, considered to be very good for these types of studies; those 101 port wine producers and distributors initially chosen were the most important in Europe, considering the volume of production and sales, and constituting, for that reason, a convenience sample). A binary probit model was developed to analyze the data. The results of the study demonstrate that when conflict is ongoing and intense it prevents the development of cooperative relationships. A trustworthy company is more likely to solve conflicts. When trust and adaptation capabilities increase, so does potential cooperation. The results also show that the presence of a foreign sales representative in the team does not exert a negative influence on cooperation. Finally, cooperation can be considered as an important means of developing skills and resources, which can then be applied to existing transaction relationships

Foi realizada a actualização taxonómica das colecções antigas. Determinaram-se novas espécies e biozonas. Os novos resultados permitem precisar o Silúrico do Buçaco que tem muitas características estratigráficas e sedimentológicas em comum com o de outras áreas da parte sul da Zona Centro Ibérica

    CDC ROADM design tradeoffs due to physical layer impairments in optical networks

    In this work, we assess the impact of several physical layer impairments (PLIs) on the performance of optical networks based on colorless, directionless and contentionless reconfigurable optical add/drop multiplexers (ROADMs), through Monte-Carlo simulation, and considering polarization division multiplexing 4 and 16 quadrature amplitude modulation (QAM) signals, at 28 GBaud, for 37.5 GHz optical channels. The PLIs taken into account are the amplified spontaneous emission noise, optical filtering, in-band crosstalk and nonlinear interference noise caused by Kerr effect. A detailed model of the ROADM node is built considering two typical ROADM architectures, broadcast and select (B&S) and route and select (R&S), and two different add/drop structures, multicast switches (MCSs) and wavelength selective switches (WSSs), resulting in four different ROADM node scenarios. Our results have shown that for 16QAM signals, the B&S ROADMs with WSSs-based add/drop structures is the scenario that has the best relation cost/performance, foreseeing its use in metro networks, while for 4QAM signals, the R&S ROADM with WSSs-based add/drop structure scenario allows a larger ROADM cascade at an expectable lower cost anticipating its implementation in long-haul networks

    Chemical control of the mealybug Phenacoccus solenopsis (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) in Australian cotton–Glasshouse assessments of insecticide efficacy

    Abstract The efficacy of commercially available chemical insecticides and biopesticides on the cotton mealybug (CMB), Phenacoccus solenopsis, was evaluated in the glasshouse. Spirotetramat, sulfoxaflor and buprofezin were identified as key insecticides for use in integrated pest management (IPM) strategies aimed at controlling CMB without flaring other co-occurring pests. When used as a single application, spirotetramat and sulfoxaflor at the rate of 96 g (active ingredient, ha−1) provided variable control of CMB. Spirotetramat used in a double spray tactic (two sequential sprays, 14–15 days apart) without crop oil provided ≥80% control of adult CMB while the addition of oil (5% v/v) increased control to ≥90%. Clothianidin synergised the spirotetramat + oil combination and was identified as a potentially useful tank mix option for use in situations where a quick knockdown of high density and/or large infestation of CMB is required, or to treat high risk infestations in squaring or younger cotton when the abundance of beneficial insects is typically low. Sulfoxaflor used in a double spray tactic provided ≥90% control of adult CMB. The addition of Pulse® penetrant (0.5% v/v) to both options improved overall efficacy. Addition of crop oil to sulfoxaflor did not yield any tangible benefits. Spirotetramat and buprofezin were identified as important tools in managing situations where whitefly (Bemisia tabaci) is the primary pest management target, but CMB is also present in the crop. Buprofezin was effective on early instar mealybugs; this makes it an option for arresting CMB population growth while allowing the beneficial insect populations to increase. Sulfoxaflor was shown to be a useful option in situations where CMB is present along with key pests such as mirids (Creontiades spp.). Mealybugs are typically well controlled by naturally occurring beneficial insects without the need for insecticide use. Chemical insecticides for CMB control should be considered only as a last resort and deployed within the bounds of an IPM strategy
