    Effect of oxygen stoichiometry on T(sub c) of Bi-based superconductors

    The role of oxygen stoichiometry on T(sub c) is relatively well established on La2CuO(4+x) and the YBa2Cu3O(7-x) (123) superconductors, as compared to the Bi-based superconductors. Results are presented of investigations on the effects of oxygen stoichiometry on the transition temperature T(sub c) of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+x) (2212 phase), and Pb-doped Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O(10+X) (2223 phase). It is shown that the effects of oxygen stoichiometry on T(sub c) of these two phases are very different. These results may be helpful in understanding the mechanism of superconductivity in the Bi-based superconductors

    Dependence of transition temperature on hole concentration per CuO2 sheet in the Bi-based superconductors

    The recently observed variations of the transition temperature (T sub c) with oxygen content in the Bi based (2212) and (2223) superconductors are analyzed in terms of p+, the hole concentration per CuO2 sheet. This analysis shows that in this system, T sub c increases with p+ initially, reaching maxima at p+ = 0.2 approx. 0.3, followed by monotonic decrease of T sub c with p+. The forms of these variations are similar to those observed in the La(2-x)Sr(x)CuO4 and YBa2Cu3Oy systems, suggesting that p+ may be an important variable governing superconductivity in the cuprate superconductors

    Magnetic Properties of the Novel Low-Dimensional Cuprate Na5RbCu4(AsO4)4Cl2

    The magnetic properties of a new compound, Na5RbCu4(AsO4)4Cl2 are reported. The material has a layered structure comprised of square Cu4O4 tetramers. The Cu ions are divalent and the system behaves as a low-dimensional S=1/2 antiferromagnet. Spin exchange in Na5RbCu4(AsO4)4Cl2 appears to be quasi-two-dimensional and non-frustrated. Measurements of the bulk magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity are consistent with low-dimensional magnetism. The compound has an interesting, low-entropy, magnetic transition at T = 17 K.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

    Neutron Scattering Measurements in RbMnF\u3csub\u3e3\u3c/sub\u3e: A Test of Spin-Wave-Region Theories at Low Temperatures and Critical Behavior Near T\u3csub\u3eN\u3c/sub\u3e

    With the discovery of magnetic ordering in RbMnF3, this unique antiferromagnetic system was recognized as a prime case for a test of conventional spin-wave theory (CSWT) because of its negligibly small anisotropy and its simple, cubic structure. CSWT predicts a simple T2 power-law fall-off of the sublattice magnetization. Yet to this day, no stringent tests have been made of this prediction. Seiden [(Phys. Lett. 28 A, 239 (1968)] deduced a T3 low-temperature behavior on the basis of antiferromagnetic resonance measurements, concluding that CSWT was not supported. We have recently carried out neutron scattering measurements of both single-crystal and powdered samples of RbMnF3 in order to test for CSWT, Seiden’s result, and two other more recent semiempirical spin-wave schemes, and we present an analysis of the results. Measurements in the critical regime gave values of the critical exponent β and of TN that are in agreement with previous measurements

    Duration of tooth alignment with fixed appliances: A systematic review and meta-analysis

    INTRODUCTION A key goal of orthodontic treatment with fixed appliances is alignment of the dentition, and this remains a commonly selected outcome in clinical studies investigating orthodontic tooth movement. This systematic review has evaluated treatment duration to achieve alignment of the mandibular dentition using fixed appliances. METHODS Systematic literature searches without restrictions were undertaken in 9 databases for randomized clinical trials (RCTs) assessing duration and rate of tooth alignment using fixed appliances with or without treatment adjuncts published up to January 2021. After duplicate study selection, data extraction, and risk of bias assessment according to Cochrane, random-effects meta-analyses of aggregate data, and individual patient data were conducted. RESULTS Thirty-five trials were included with 2258 participants (39% male; mean age 17.8 years), giving a pooled duration to achieve whole-arch alignment of the mandibular dentition of 263.0 days (4 trials; 95% confidence interval [CI], 186.7-339.4 days) and incisor alignment in the mandibular arch of 100.7 days (9 trials; 95% CI, 84.1-117.4 days). Surgical-assisted orthodontics was associated with reduced duration of incisor alignment: mean difference of 44.3 days less (4 trials; 95% CI, 20.0-68.9 days; P <0.001; high quality of evidence), whereas subgroup and meta-regression analyses indicated significant effects of baseline crowding and premolar extractions. Individual patient data analysis from 3 RCTs indicated that for each additional participant age year, whole-arch alignment of the mandibular dentition took 13.7 days longer (3 trials; 95% CI, 7.7-17.7 days; P <0.001) and for each additional mm of irregularity, 17.5 days more were needed (2 trials; 95% CI, 9.8-25.2 days; P <0.001). CONCLUSIONS Patient and treatment-related characteristics can significantly affect the duration of tooth alignment and should be taken into account both clinically and when designing trial outcomes. Future research studies investigating rates of orthodontic tooth alignment would benefit from adequate sample sizes and a more consistent methodology in outcome assessment. Data in this systematic review provides a basis for appropriate trial design for future RCTs investigating the rate of orthodontic tooth alignment with fixed appliances

    A multi-centre audit to assess the effectiveness of the British Orthodontic Society 'Hold that Smile' retainer videos

    Introduction: Retention is a crucial part of orthodontic treatment, however patients often do not wear their retainers as advised. The British Orthodontic Society developed the ‘Hold that Smile’ campaign in 2017, to improve patient knowledge about retention. Information is provided in two formats: a cartoon and a conventional film. / Objective: To assess if patients find the ‘Hold that Smile’ videos useful, and if they improved patients’ intended retainer wear. The gold standard was that 90% of patients should intend to wear their retainers long-term following watching the videos. / Design: National multi-centre audit. / Setting: Nine units in the UK. / Methods: Patients 10 years old and over, in fixed appliances or retention, watched the retainer videos and then completed a questionnaire that was designed specifically for this audit. Each unit collected data for approximately 30 patients. / Results: Data was collected for 278 patients in total. The average age was 17.9 years; 64.4% of patients were female and 35.6% male. Most patients (86.3%) watched both videos and, of these, 44.1% preferred the film, 31.3% preferred the cartoon and 24.6% had no preference. The majority of patients (81.3%) felt that the film provided them with new information, compared with a lower percentage (48.5%) for the cartoon and more patients said they would recommend the film (76.3%) compared with the cartoon (63.3%). Prior to watching the videos, 77.0% of patients felt they knew about long-term retainer wear and 74.3% of those intended to wear their retainers long-term. After watching the videos, 96.4% of all patients thought they would now wear their retainers long-term. / Conclusion: After watching the videos, there was a notable increase in the number of patients planning to wear their retainers long-term and the gold standard was met. Therefore, these videos may be beneficial in improving understanding and compliance with retention

    Charge disproportionation in YNiO3_{3} : ESR and susceptibility study

    We present a study of the magnetic properties of YNiO3_{3} in the paramagnetic range, above and below the metal-insulator (MI) transition. The dc susceptibility, χdc\chi_{dc} (measured up to 1000 K) is a decreasing function of T for T>T >150 K (the N\'{e}el temperature) and we observe two different Curie-Weiss regimes corresponding to the metallic and insulator phases. In the metallic phase, this behaviour seems to be associated with the small ionic radius of Y% 3+^{3+}. The value of the Curie constant for T<< TMI_{MI} allows us to discard the possibility of Ni3+^{3+} localization. An electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrum is visible in the insulator phase and only a fraction of the Ni ions contributes to this resonance. We explain the ESR and χdc\chi _{dc} behaviour for T << TMI_{MI} in terms of charge disproportionation of the type 2Ni% ^{3+}\to Ni2+^{2+}+Ni4+,^{4+}, that is compatible with the previously observed structural transition across TMI_{MI}.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys.
