What is the functional role of adult neurogenesis in the hippocampus?
The dentate gyrus is part of the hippocampal memory system and special in
that it generates new neurons throughout life. Here we discuss the
question of what the functional role of these new neurons might be. Our
hypothesis is that they help the dentate gyrus to avoid the problem of
catastrophic interference when adapting to new environments. We assume
that old neurons are rather stable and preserve an optimal encoding
learned for known environments while new neurons are plastic to adapt to
those features that are qualitatively new in a new environment. A simple
network simulation demonstrates that adding new plastic neurons is indeed
a successful strategy for adaptation without catastrophic interference
Efficient ConvNets for Analog Arrays
Analog arrays are a promising upcoming hardware technology with the potential
to drastically speed up deep learning. Their main advantage is that they
compute matrix-vector products in constant time, irrespective of the size of
the matrix. However, early convolution layers in ConvNets map very unfavorably
onto analog arrays, because kernel matrices are typically small and the
constant time operation needs to be sequentially iterated a large number of
times, reducing the speed up advantage for ConvNets. Here, we propose to
replicate the kernel matrix of a convolution layer on distinct analog arrays,
and randomly divide parts of the compute among them, so that multiple kernel
matrices are trained in parallel. With this modification, analog arrays execute
ConvNets with an acceleration factor that is proportional to the number of
kernel matrices used per layer (here tested 16-128). Despite having more free
parameters, we show analytically and in numerical experiments that this
convolution architecture is self-regularizing and implicitly learns similar
filters across arrays. We also report superior performance on a number of
datasets and increased robustness to adversarial attacks. Our investigation
suggests to revise the notion that mixed analog-digital hardware is not
suitable for ConvNets
A comparison of scavenging and deposition processes in global models: results from the WCRP Cambridge Workshop of 1995
We report on results from a World Climate Research Program workshop on representations of scavenging and deposition processes in global transport models of the atmosphere. 15 models were evaluated by comparing simulations of radon, lead, sulfur dioxide, and sulfate against each other, and against observations of these constituents. This paper provides a survey on the simulation differences between models. It identifies circumstances where models are consistent with observations or with each other, and where they differ from observations or with each other. The comparison shows that most models are able to simulate seasonal species concentrations near the surface over continental sites to within a factor of 2 over many regions of the globe. Models tend to agree more closely over source (continental) regions than for remote (polar and oceanic) regions. Model simulations differ most strongly in the upper troposphere for species undergoing wet scavenging processes. There are not a sufficient number of observations to characterize the climatology (long-term average) of species undergoing wet scavenging in the upper troposphere. This highlights the need for either a different strategy for model evaluation (e.g., comparisons on an event by event basis) or many more observations of a few carefully chosen constituents
Non-resonant multipactor - A statistical model
High power microwave systems operating in vacuum or near vacuum run the risk of multipactor breakdown. In order to avoid multipactor, it is necessary to make theoretical predictions of critical parameter combinations. These treatments are generally based on the assumption of electrons moving in resonance with the electric field while traversing the gap between critical surfaces. Through comparison with experiments, it has been found that only for small system dimensions will the resonant approach give correct predictions. Apparently, the resonance is destroyed due to the statistical spread in electron emission velocity, and for a more valid description it is necessary to resort to rather complicated statistical treatments of the electron population, and extensive simulations. However, in the limit where resonance is completely destroyed it is possible to use a much simpler treatment, here called non-resonant theory. In this paper, we develop the formalism for this theory, use it to calculate universal curves for the existence of multipactor, and compare with previous results. Two important effects that leads to an increase in the multipactor threshold in comparison with the resonant prediction are identified. These are the statistical spread of impact speed, which leads to a lower average electron impact speed, and the impact of electrons in phase regions where the secondary electrons are immediately reabsorbed, leading to an effective removal of electrons from the discharge
Transport Out of the Antarctic Polar Vortex from a Three-dimensional Transport Model
[1] A three-dimensional chemical transport model is utilized to study the transport out of the Antarctic polar vortex during the southern hemisphere spring. On average, over five consecutive years between 1993 and 1997, horizontal transport out of the vortex into the midlatitude stratosphere is smaller than vertical transport into the troposphere. However, there is significant interannual variability in the magnitude of mass exchange, which is related to year-to-year fluctuations in planetary wave activity. In 1994 the net loss of the vortex tracer mass in September is similar to that in October. However, the relative mass flux entering the midlatitude stratosphere and the troposphere differ between the two months. The ratio of horizontal transport out of the vortex to vertical transport into the troposphere is about 3:7 in September and 5:5 in October, indicating the higher permeability of the vortex in October compared to September. The September mass flux into the troposphere is larger than in October, consistent with the fact that stronger diabatic cooling occurs in September than October over Antarctica. The estimated ozone change at southern midlatitudes due to the intrusion of ozone-depleted air from high latitudes during September–October 1994 is about −0.44% per decade, which could contribute up to 10% of observed ozone decline at southern midlatitudes in spring. This amount is an underestimate of the dilution effect from high latitudes during the spring season, as it does not include the vortex breakup in late spring
Medium and long-term adherence to postabortion contraception among women having experienced unsafe abortion in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Postabortion contraceptive service is considered an effective means in addressing the problem of unsafe abortion; in spite this fact this component remains one of the weakest parts of postabortion care. In this context, the paper aims to describe the impact of a postabortion contraceptive service intervention among women admitted with complications from unsafe abortions and to explore the women's long-term contraceptive adherence.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>392 women having experienced unsafe abortion were identified by an empathetic approach and offered postabortion contraceptive service, which included counselling on HIV and condom use. Questionnaire interviews about contraceptive use were conducted at the time of inclusion and 12 months after the abortion. Additionally, in-depth interviews were performed 6–12 months after the abortion.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Eighty-nine percent of the women accepted postabortion contraception. Follow-up information was obtained 12 months after the abortion among 59 percent of the women. Among these, 79 percent of the married women and 84 percent of the single women stated they were using contraception at 12 months. Condom use among the single women increased significantly during the 12 months follow up.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Postabortion contraceptive services appear to be well accepted by women who are admitted with complications after an unsafe abortion and should thus be recognized as an important means in addressing the problem of unsafe abortion. In addition, counselling about HIV and condom use should be considered an essential aspect of postabortion care.</p
Training large-scale ANNs on simulated resistive crossbar arrays
Accelerating training of artificial neural networks (ANN) with analog
resistive crossbar arrays is a promising idea. While the concept has been
verified on very small ANNs and toy data sets (such as MNIST), more
realistically sized ANNs and datasets have not yet been tackled. However, it is
to be expected that device materials and hardware design constraints, such as
noisy computations, finite number of resistive states of the device materials,
saturating weight and activation ranges, and limited precision of
analog-to-digital converters, will cause significant challenges to the
successful training of state-of-the-art ANNs. By using analog hardware aware
ANN training simulations, we here explore a number of simple algorithmic
compensatory measures to cope with analog noise and limited weight and output
ranges and resolutions, that dramatically improve the simulated training
performances on RPU arrays on intermediately to large-scale ANNs
