    Many innovative experiments are designed to answ er research questions about hip biomechanics, however many fail to define a coordinate system. This makes comparisons between studies unreliable and is an unnecessary hurdle in extrapolating experimental results to clinical reality. The aim of this study was to present a specimen mounting protocol which aligns and registers hip specimens in the International Society of Biomechanics (ISB) coordinate system, which is defined by bony landmarks that are identified by palpation of the patient’s body. This wou ld enable direct comparison between experimental testing and clinical gait analysis or radiographic studies. To represent the intact hip, four intact synthetic full - pelves with 8 full - length articulating femora were assembled and digitised to define the IS B coordinate system. Using our proposed protocol, pelvis specimens were bisected into left and right hemi - pelves and femora transected at the mid - shaft, and then mounted in bone pots to represent a typical experimental setup. Anatomical landmarks were re - digitised relative to mechanical features of the bone pots and the misalignment was calculated. The mean misalignment was found to be less than 1.5° flexion/extension, ab/adduction and internal/external rotation for both the pelves and femora; this equate s to less than 2.5 % of a normal range of hip motion. The proposed specimen mounting protocol provides a simple method to align in vitro hip specimens in the ISB coordinate system which enables improved comparison between laboratory testing and clinical s tudies.     A Potential Representation for Two-Dimensional Waves in Elastic Materials of Harmonic Type

    In the present note we consider two-dimensional finite dynamical deformations for the class of homogeneous, isotropic elastic materials introduced by F. John in [1] and referred to by him as materials of harmonic type. The theory of such materials, developed in [1] and [2], appears to be simpler in many respects than that of more general elastic materials, and it may offer the possibility of investigating some features of nonlinear elastic behavior more explicitly than is possible in general. For plane motions of such materials, we derive here a representation for the displacements in terms of two potentials which is analogous to the theorem of Lamé in classical linear elasticity (see [3]) for the case of plane strain. The two nonlinear differential equations satisfied by the potentials reduce upon linearization to the wave equations associated with irrotational and equivoluminai waves in the linear theory. In the following section we state without derivation the equations governing two-dimensional waves in an elastic material of harmonic type. The reader is referred to [1] for details.     A bioluminescent assay for ATP in water borne bacteria is made by adding nitric acid to a water sample with concentrated bacteria to rupture the bacterial cells. The sample is diluted with sterile, deionized water, then mixed with a luciferase-luciferin mixture and the resulting light output of the bioluminescent reaction is measured and correlated with bacteria present. A standard and a blank also are presented so that the light output can be correlated to bacteria in the sample and system noise can be substracted from the readings. A chemiluminescent assay for iron porphyrins in water borne bacteria is made by adding luminol reagent to a water sample with concentrated bacteria and measuring the resulting light output of the chemiluminescent reaction
