Cavitation and bubble collapse in hot asymmetric nuclear matter
The dynamics of embryonic bubbles in overheated, viscous and non-Markovian
nuclear matter is studied. It is shown that the memory and the Fermi surface
distortions significantly affect the hinderance of bubble collapse and
determine a characteristic oscillations of the bubble radius. These
oscillations occur due to the additional elastic force induced by the memory
integral.Comment: Revtex file (10 pages) and 3 figure
Taylor dispersion of gyrotactic swimming micro-organisms in a linear flow
The theory of generalized Taylor dispersion for suspensions of Brownian particles is developed to study the dispersion of gyrotactic swimming micro-organisms in a linear shear flow. Such creatures are bottom-heavy and experience a gravitational torque which acts to right them when they are tipped away from the vertical. They also suffer a net viscous torque in the presence of a local vorticity field. The orientation of the cells is intrinsically random but the balance of the two torques results in a bias toward a preferred swimming direction. The micro-organisms are sufficiently large that Brownian motion is negligible but their random swimming across streamlines results in a mean velocity together with diffusion. As an example, we consider the case of vertical shear flow and calculate the diffusion coefficients for a suspension of the alga Chlamydomonas nivalis. This rational derivation is compared with earlier approximations for the diffusivity
Differential criterion of a bubble collapse in viscous liquids
The present work is devoted to a model of bubble collapse in a Newtonian
viscous liquid caused by an initial bubble wall motion. The obtained bubble
dynamics described by an analytic solution significantly depends on the liquid
and bubble parameters. The theory gives two types of bubble behavior: collapse
and viscous damping. This results in a general collapse condition proposed as
the sufficient differential criterion. The suggested criterion is discussed and
successfully applied to the analysis of the void and gas bubble collapses.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
On the Production of the Positive Electron
The experimental discovery of the positive electron gives us a striking confirmation of Dirac's theory od the electron, and of his most recent attempts to gice a consistent interpretation of the formalism of that theory. As is well know, and quite apart from the difficulties connected with the existence and stability of the electron itself, the theory in its original form led to very grave difficulties in all problems involving length sof the order of the Compton wavelength, in that it predicted the occurrence of electrons of negative kinetic energy, in gross conflict with experience. Dirac has pointed out that we might obtain a consistent theory by assuming that it is only the absence of electrons of negative kinetic energy that has a physical meaning; in this way one could avoid the occurrence of the critical transitions, and yet understand the validity of many correct predictions of the theory, such as the formula for relativistic fine structure, and the Thomson and Klein-Nishina scattering formulae: only the physical interpretation of the formalism was changed, and involved in many cases the appearance pairs of electrons and "antielectrons" -- particles of electronic mass and of positive charge numerically equal to that of the electron. It was this aspect of the theory which remained dubious; and the discovery of the positive electron appears to settle that doubt
The effect of pressure on statics, dynamics and stability of multielectron bubbles
The effect of pressure and negative pressure on the modes of oscillation of a
multi-electron bubble in liquid helium is calculated. Already at low pressures
of the order of 10-100 mbar, these effects are found to significantly modify
the frequencies of oscillation of the bubble. Stabilization of the bubble is
shown to occur in the presence of a small negative pressure, which expands the
bubble radius. Above a threshold negative pressure, the bubble is unstable.Comment: 4 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Physical Review

Singular Potentials and Limit Cycles
We show that a central singular potential (with ) is
renormalized by a one-parameter square-well counterterm; low-energy observables
are made independent of the square-well width by adjusting the square-well
strength. We find a closed form expression for the renormalization-group
evolution of the square-well counterterm.Comment: 15 pages LaTex, 5 eps figures, error in figures and text correcte
Effects of Bulk Viscosity in Non-linear Bubble Dynamics
The non-linear bubble dynamics equations in a compressible liquid have been
modified considering the effects of compressibility of both the liquid and the
gas at the bubble interface. A new bubble boundary equation has been derived,
which includes a new term resulted from the liquid bulk viscosity effects. The
influence of this term has been numerically investigated considering the
effects of water vapor and chemical reactions on the bubble evolution. The
results clearly indicate that the new term has an important damping role at the
collapse, so that its consideration decreases the amplitude of the bubble
rebounds after the collapse. This damping feature is more remarkable for higher
deriving pressures.Comment: 4 pages, 7 figure
