    A public health approach to understanding and preventing violent radicalization

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Very recent acts of terrorism in the UK were perpetrated by 'homegrown', well educated young people, rather than by foreign Islamist groups; consequently, a process of violent radicalization was proposed to explain how ordinary people were recruited and persuaded to sacrifice their lives.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>Counterterrorism approaches grounded in the criminal justice system have not prevented violent radicalization. Indeed there is some evidence that these approaches may have encouraged membership of radical groups by not recognizing Muslim communities as allies, citizens, victims of terrorism, and victims of discrimination, but only as suspect communities who were then further alienated. Informed by public health research and practice, a new approach is proposed to target populations vulnerable to recruitment, rather than rely only on research of well known terrorist groups and individual perpetrators of terrorist acts.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This paper proposes public health research and practice to guard against violent radicalization.</p

    Evidence that the same structural gene encodes testicular and adrenal 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase-isomerase

    Thermostability of 3β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase-isomerase (3βHSD) activity was examined in testes and adrenal glands from several inbred lines and feral mice. A thermolabile varant of 3βHSD was detected in the feral Brno mice. The thermostability ( t 1/2 ) of 3βHSD was approximately 7 min for both testes and adrenal glands from C57BL/6J mice, compared with 4 min for both tissues from Brno mice. Comparison of testicular and adrenal 3βHSD thermostability in six kinds of mice indicated that the t 1/2 of 3βHSD was correlated in the two tissues and could be classified into two distinct types, thermolabile and thermostable. In contrast, quantitative variants in 3βHSD activity were not correlated in the two tissues. These data are consistent with the hypothesis that testicular and adrenal 3βHSD is encoded by the same structural gene but that expression of 3βHSD activity is independently controlled in testes and adrenal glands.Peer Reviewedhttp://deepblue.lib.umich.edu/bitstream/2027.42/44154/1/10528_2004_Article_BF00498961.pd

    The molecular logic of endocannabinoid signalling

    The endocannabinoids are a family of lipid messengers that engage the cell surface receptors that are targeted by Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol, the active principle in marijuana (Cannabis). They are made on demand through cleavage of membrane precursors and are involved in various short-range signalling processes. In the brain, they combine with CB1 cannabinoid receptors on axon terminals to regulate ion channel activity and neurotransmitter release. Their ability to modulate synaptic efficacy has a wide range of functional consequences and provides unique therapeutic possibilities. © 2003, Nature Publishing Group. All rights reserved

    WormPose: Image synthesis and convolutional networks for pose estimation in C. elegans

    An important model system for understanding genes, neurons and behavior, the nematode worm C. elegans naturally moves through a variety of complex postures, for which estimation from video data is challenging. We introduce an open-source Python package, WormPose, for 2D pose estimation in C. elegans, including self-occluded, coiled shapes. We leverage advances in machine vision afforded from convolutional neural networks and introduce a synthetic yet realistic generative model for images of worm posture, thus avoiding the need for human-labeled training. WormPose is effective and adaptable for imaging conditions across worm tracking efforts. We quantify pose estimation using synthetic data as well as N2 and mutant worms in on-food conditions. We further demonstrate WormPose by analyzing long (∟ 10 hour), fast-sampled (∟ 30 Hz) recordings of on-food N2 worms to provide a posture-scale analysis of roaming/dwelling behaviors
