Requirements for multidisciplinary design of aerospace vehicles on high performance computers

    Get PDF
The design of aerospace vehicles is becoming increasingly complex as the various contributing disciplines and physical components become more tightly coupled. This coupling leads to computational problems that will be tractable only if significant advances in high performance computing systems are made. Some of the modeling, algorithmic and software requirements generated by the design problem are discussed

    Shatranj

Shatranj contains the prologue and first five chapters of an in-progress novel completed as an Honors Thesis in Creative Writing. The story is set in Mumbai, India and tells the story of a fictional assassin company called the Fireflies. The story is told through the perspectives of multiple characters; Ishan, the protagonist, a new recruit to the group; Rhea a former Firefly who left the group and joined a group of other Firefly deserters; Tahiliani, one of the heads of the group; and Akash, a senior member of the Fireflies who desperately wants to prove himself and replace Tahiliani as head of the group. The prologue and the first five chapters serve to set the scene, hint at past events, as well as explain the function of the Fireflies and the hierarchy within the group. Ishan\u27s story begins with his first assassination and continues every alternate chapter. The rest of the chapters deal with each of the POV side characters and their situations. Akash, unsatisfied with his life, yearns to take over from Tahiliani, who is shattered by events of the past. Rhea, who is forming a group of Firefly runaways returns to Mumbai in the hopes of turning some of the Fireflies to their side. Tensions rise, secrets are highlighted, and each character\u27s position on the chessboard is established. These chapters serve to showcase the skills and techniques the author has learned after four years of writing classes at Bard College and Bucknell University. It can be classified as a work of fiction

Impact of Japanese Mergers on Shareholder Wealth: An Analysis of Bidder and Target Companies

The market for corporate control in the second largest economy in the world behaves very different from that in the U.S. Using a sample of 91 mergers in the period 1982-2003 we document several distinctive features of this market in Japan. First, we show that in stark contrast to the pro-cyclical U.S. merger waves, mergers in Japan tend to be counter-cyclical, both with respect to the general economy as well as with respect to stock market valuations. Second, and again in contrast to the U.S. experience, we find that a significant fraction of Japanese mergers are orchestrated by the main banks; in such cases, mergers are not between two weak companies, but at least one of the merging companies is financially strong. Other distinctive features of Japanese mergers are the positive pre-announcement returns accruing to both bidders and targets, with bidders capturing approximately half the gains that accrue to target firms. We also find differential shareholder wealth effects in the bubble period (1982-1989), the early 1990s, and the post-financial regulation regime (1997-2003). Overall our results point to a market for corporate control that is distinctly less shareholder-centered than that in the U.S. and one where creditors play an important, perhaps dominant, role.mergers;Japanse mergers;corporate control;take-over

VORCOR: A computer program for calculating characteristics of wings with edge vortex separation by using a vortex-filament and-core model

    Get PDF
A computer code base on an improved vortex filament/vortex core method for predicting aerodynamic characteristics of slender wings with edge vortex separations is developed. The code is applicable to camber wings, straked wings or wings with leading edge vortex flaps at subsonic speeds. The prediction of lifting pressure distribution and the computer time are improved by using a pair of concentrated vortex cores above the wing surface. The main features of this computer program are: (1) arbitrary camber shape may be defined and an option for exactly defining leading edge flap geometry is also provided; (2) the side edge vortex system is incorporated

    Nuclear structure study around Z=28

Yrast levels of Ni, Cu and Zn isotopes for 40N5040 \leq N \leq50 have been described by state-of-the-art shell model calculations with three recently available interactions using 56^{56}Ni as a core in the f5/2pg9/2f_{5/2}pg_{9/2} model space. The results are unsatisfactory viz. large E(2+)E(2^+) for very neutron rich nuclei, small B(E2) values in comparison to experimental values. These results indicate an importance of inclusion of πf7/2\pi f_{7/2} and νd5/2\nu d_{5/2} orbitals in the model space to reproduce collectivity in this region.Comment: 12 pages, 14 figure

Improving Call Center Operations Using Performance-Based Routing Strategies

    Get PDF
The article presents a simulation study of performance-based call routing strategies using a variety of routing rules based on historic data such as average handling time and first call resolution rate. We demonstrate the relative benefits of various performance-based call routing strategies using actual data from a financial call center. In particular, our modeling results indicate that call routing based on adjusted average handle time (AAHT) and z-scores of AAHT are two strategies that can substantially improve overall call center performance and customer satisfaction
