Irish CIOs’ Influence on Technology Innovation and IT-Business Alignment
Technology is the driving force behind many of today’s new products, services, and cost-cutting measures. However, there are gaps in our understanding about how technological innovation is fostered and nurtured in organizations. Part of the answer is to examine how Chief Information Officers (CIOs) exercise influence regarding technological innovation in organizations. This is particularly important since the CIO is the head of technology in organizations, an important source of technological innovation. This article draws on an established executive influence framework to demonstrate how Irish CIOs are able to solidify Information Technology’s (IT’s) contribution to technological innovation via relational means. Most of the CIOs in our study were able to successfully influence other executives to support these innovations which led to better IT-business alignment. However, other CIOs in our study were unsuccessful at influencing executives, which increased the disconnection between the CIO and the executive. Building on this study, we suggest significant practices and behaviors that CIOs can use to successfully influence other executives regarding technological innovations. CIOs must recognize that the relational side of technology alignment should be leveraged for them to successfully manage their contribution to technological innovation
A straightforward route to tetrachloroauric acid from gold metal and molecular chlorine for nanoparticle synthesis

Aqueous solutions of tetrachloroauric acid of high purity and stability were synthesised using the known reaction of gold metal with chlorine gas. The straightforward procedure developed here allows the resulting solution to be used directly for gold nanoparticle synthesis. The procedure involves bubbling chlorine gas through pure water containing a pellet of gold. The reaction is quantitative and progressed at a satisfactory rate at 50 °C. The gold(III) chloride solutions produced by this method show no evidence of returning to metallic gold over at least twelve months. This procedure also provides a straightforward method to determine the concentration of the resulting solution using the initial mass of gold and volume of water
Titanic: Consuming the Myths and Meanings of an Ambiguous Brand
Myths have come of age in consumer research. In the 22 years since Levy’s inaugural article, the literature has grown at an impressive rate. Yet important questions remain unanswered: What makes some myths especially meaningful to consumers? Why are certain consumer myths more prevalent and less perishable than others? This article argues that ambiguity is an influential factor. Using the RMS Titanic as an empirical exemplar, it unpacks the principal forms of myth-informed ambiguity surrounding “the unsinkable brand.” Predicated on William Empson’s hitherto unsung principles of literary criticism, the article posits that ambiguity in its multifaceted forms is integral to outstanding branding and consumer meaning making, as well as myth appeal more generally
Genetic gain in perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) varieties 1973 to 2013
AbstractPerennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) forms the basis of grassland production in temperate pastures and is globally one of the most important forage grasses. Consequently, there has been large plant breeding industry investment over the past 40 years in producing new varieties and independent testing systems designed to identify and list those with the most improved performances. This study was conducted at the Plant Testing Station, Crossnacreevy, Northern Ireland and compared the DM yield and sward density of new varieties submitted from 1973 to 2013 and grass digestibility from 1980 to 2013, under conservation and simulated grazing managements. A variety × years matrix was compiled for each parameter and comparable means between varieties never in side by side performance trials were produced. Dry matter yields showed an overall significant (p < 0.001) average annual increase of 0.52 % under conservation and 0.35 % under simulated grazing, with similar gain levels within maturity groups or ploidies. These rates were not constant over time, and periods of no gain occurred in various variety groupings. Sward density of the examined varieties did not change significantly. Herbage digestibility showed no improvement over the timeframe but had the largest differences between concurrent varieties, indicating that improvements were possible in the future. The study indicated that plant breeding gains were primarily DM yield focused with sward density remaining stagnant over the 40 years, while the lack of grass digestibility improvement appeared to only require more time to overcome. Evidence of benefits and risks of variety testing influences on plant breeding objectives was discussed.</jats:p
Parents in transition: Experiences of parents of young people with a liver transplant transferring to adult services
Predictors of successful transition from pediatric to adult services include ability to self-manage and engage with healthcare services. Parents have a key role in healthcare management throughout childhood and adolescence including encouraging development of self-management skills in their children. Transition to adult services can be challenging for parents and young people, yet parents' views regarding transition remain largely unexplored. Nine parents of pediatric liver transplant recipients (15.2-25.1 yr) participated in semistructured interviews. Interviews were analyzed using IPA. Analysis revealed three key themes: "emotional impact of transplantation," "protection vs. independence," and "ending relationships and changing roles." Parents expressed the dichotomous nature of the desire to promote independence in their child while still maintaining control and protection, and discussed how changing roles and relationships were difficult to navigate. Parents are important facilitators of young people's development of self-management skills for successful transfer to adult services. Parents should be supported to move from a "managerial" to a "supervisory" role during transition to help young people engage independently with the healthcare team. Findings support the development of interventions for parents to emphasize their role in transition and guide the transfer of self-management skills from parent to young person
An investigation into combining both facial detection and landmark localisation into a unified procedure using GPU computing
This thesis describes the design and implementation of a unified framework for face
detection and landmark alignment in arbitrary in the wild images. Traditionally, both of
these problems have been addressed separately in literature with impressive results
being recently reported in both of these fields. But, if one was to construct a pipeline
consisting of a state-of-the-art face detection method followed by a state-of-the-art
facial landmark localisation algorithm, the overall performance outcome would not be
proficient enough to be used in high level algorithms such as face recognition and
facial expression. This is because the accuracy produced by the face detector is not
sufficiently high enough to initialise the landmark localisation algorithm.
To address this aforementioned limitation, this thesis aims to propose an approach
that combines both of these tasks into a single unified algorithm that can be run in real
time, by utilising the parallel computing architecture of the graphics processing unit
(GPU). This will be done by using a Cascaded-Regression (CR) algorithm in a sliding
window fashion. The proposed system will exploit the CR algorithms ability to compute
the 2D pose of a face from rough initial estimates, in order to generate a Hough-
Transform voting scheme for detecting candidate faces and filtering out irrelevant
background. The obtained detection surface will then be further refined using SVM to
yield both face detections and the location of their parts.
The proposed system for this thesis will be built within the MATLAB environment, using
a MEX-file which will provide an interface to the proposed CUDA algorithm. The results
of which, will be tested against current state-of-the-art methods for both face detection
and landmark localisation.
We evaluate performance on the most widely used data sets in face detection, namely
annotated faces in-the-wild (AFW) (Zhu and Ramanan, 2012), Face Detection Dataset
and Benchmark (FDDB) (Jain and Learned-Miller, 2010) and Caltech Occluded Faces
in the Wild (COFW) (Burgos-Artizzu, Perona and Dollár, 2013). The empirical results
demonstrate that the proposed unified framework achieves state-of-the-art
performance in both face detection and facial alignment, and that our detector clearly
outperforms all commercial and published methods by a margin of over 10% in
detection accuracy on the AFW dataset
