Method involves relationships between errors introduced by using finite sampling rates and parameters describing specific numerical method used. Procedurre is used in design and analysi of digital filters and simulators

The impact of fourth generation computers on NASTRAN

    Get PDF
The impact of 'fourth generation' computers (STAR 100 or ILLIAC 4) on NASTRAN is considered. The desired characteristics of large programs designed for execution on 4G machines are described

Passive venting technique for shallow cavities

    Get PDF
A device is introduced for reducing drag and store separation difficulties caused by shallow cavities on aircraft in supersonic flight consisting of a group of hollow pipes the same length as the cavity. The pipes are attached to the cavity floor so as to allow air to flow through the pipes. This device allows air to flow through the pipes opposite to the direction of flow outside the pipes. This results in reduced drag and improved store separation characteristics

The NASTRAN Error Correction Information System (ECIS)

    Get PDF
A data management procedure, called Error Correction Information System (ECIS), is described. The purpose of this system is to implement the rapid transmittal of error information between the NASTRAN Systems Management Office (NSMO) and the NASTRAN user community. The features of ECIS and its operational status are summarized. The mode of operation for ECIS is compared to the previous error correction procedures. It is shown how the user community can have access to error information much more rapidly when using ECIS. Flow charts and time tables characterize the convenience and time saving features of ECIS

Illumination from space with orbiting solar-reflector spacecraft

    Get PDF
The feasibility of using orbiting mirrors to reflect sunlight to Earth for several illumination applications is studied. A constellation of sixteen 1 km solar reflector spacecraft in geosynchronous orbit can illuminate a region 333 km in diameter to 8 lux, which is brighter than most existing expressway lighting systems. This constellation can serve one region all night long or can provide illumination during mornings and evenings to five regions across the United States. Preliminary cost estimates indicate such an endeavor is economically feasible. The studies also explain how two solar reflectors can illuminate the in-orbit nighttime operations of Space Shuttle. An unfurlable, 1 km diameter solar reflector spacecraft design concept was derived. This spacecraft can be packaged in the Space, Shuttle, transported to low Earth orbit, unfurled, and solar sailed to operational orbits up to geosynchronous. The necessary technical studies and improvements in technology are described, and potential environmental concerns are discussed

Application of a data base management system to a finite element model

    Get PDF
In today's software market, much effort is being expended on the development of data base management systems (DBMS). Most commercially available DBMS were designed for business use. However, the need for such systems within the engineering and scientific communities is becoming apparent. A potential DBMS application that appears attractive is the handling of data for finite element engineering models. The applications of a commercially available, business-oriented DBMS to a structural engineering, finite element model is explored. The model, DBMS, an approach to using the DBMS, advantages and disadvantages are described. Plans for research on a scientific and engineering DBMS are discussed
