Evaluation of Cellular Fibronectin Plasma Levels as a Useful Staging Tool in Different Stages of Transitional Cell Carcinoma of the Bladder and Renal Cell Carcinoma
Reliable markers for both renal cell carcinoma (RCC) and transitional cell carcinoma of the bladder (TCC) are lacking
Co-transport-induced instability of membrane voltage in tip-growing cells
A salient feature of stationary patterns in tip-growing cells is the key role
played by the symports and antiports, membrane proteins that translocate two
ionic species at the same time. It is shown that these co-transporters
destabilize generically the membrane voltage if the two translocated ions
diffuse differently and carry a charge of opposite (same) sign for symports
(antiports). Orders of magnitude obtained for the time and lengthscale are in
agreement with experiments. A weakly nonlinear analysis characterizes the
bifurcation
Muscling selection in swine and its effect on carcass traits
We are attempting to develop a well-muscled line of Durocs by selecting for minimum back fat and maximum loin eye area as estimated by the Anscan and to form a control line by randomly selecting from the same base population. The lines will be compared for performance and carcass traits, including incidence of pale soft exudative carcasses. Expected and realized heritability estimates for carcass traits will be calculated.; Swine Day, Manhattan, KS, November 2, 197

X-ray absorption near-edge spectroscopy of plutonium solid species.
We present XANES at the L{sub III} edge for four plutonium solid phases: Pu(III)F{sub 3}, Pu(IV)O{sub 2}, NaPu(V)O{sub 2}CO{sub 3}, and Ba{sub 3}Pu(VI)O{sub 6}. These correspond to the four important oxidation states in the process chemistry and environmental chemistry of plutonium. By a fitting method that uses an arc tangent function and gaussian curves, it was possible to reproducibly determine the edge energy and distinguish among the four oxidation states. These data demonstrate a 1.85 {+-} 0.20 eV shift per oxidation state
Nxele, Ntsikana and the origins of the Xhosa religious reaction
The sudden expulsion of the Xhosa across the Fish River in 1811–12 created a practical and conceptual crisis which the traditional political authorities were unable to resolve. Two commoners, Nxele and Ntsikana, emerged in this vacuum, each proposing his own solution to the problems posed by the white irruption. Although these responses were religious responses, they were neither irrational nor incomprehensible. Xhosa religion had long functioned as an instrument for the control of the material world. By incorporating selected Christian concepts with the Xhosa world-view, Nxele and Ntsikana were able to provide the Xhosa with acceptable explanations of past events and prescriptions for future action. Nxele urged resistance and Ntsikana preached submission, but an examination of their personal histories shows that these final conclusions were more the product of exterior pressure than interior revelation. It may be suggested that the future reputations of the two men, like their past actions, will be determined more by the popular mood than by anything they themselves did or said
Selection for muscling in swine and its effect on carcass traits
Line differences in weight, litter size at different ages, and in age, loin eye area, and backfat thickness of pigs (adjusted to 200 pounds live weight) were not significant. Sex differences in weight and backfat thickness were significant. Dam groups of progeny differed significantly (P\u3c.0l) in-weights at birth and at 14 and 28 days old and in age, loin eye area, and backfat thickness adjusted to 220 pounds live weight. Hams produced by barrows in the select line were significantly (P\u3c.0l) darker and firmer than those from barrows in the control line.; Swine Day, Manhattan, KS, November 14, 197
Evaluation of Three New Strategies to Fight Obesity in Families
Aims. To evaluate 3 strategies to reduce weight in obese families. Research design and methods. 142 obese parents and 119 obese children kept a fat-calorie restriction diet. On top of this diet, the families were randomized in a three-factorial design to one or more of three weight-loss strategies: (1) an additional diet preferring carbohydrates having a low glycemic index (dual diet), (2) financial incentive, and (3) telemonitoring of weight and physical activity. Results. All children improved their BMI-SDS by 0.18 ± 0.25 (P < .001) independently of the weight-loss strategy. In parents, relative losses of weight (kg) were −6.4% versus −4.0% for dual diet versus calorie restriction (P = .029), −6.9% versus −3.4% for with or without financial incentive (P = .002), and −8.0% versus −4.8% for with or without telemonitoring (P = .033). The weight loss after financial incentive plus dual diet plus telemonitoring was −14.4%. Conclusions. All strategies were effective in adults, in particular when combined. Children improved their BMI-SDS regardless of the strategy
Muscling selection in swine and its effect on carcass traits
Pigs farrowed in May, 1972, were the first born in the select and control lines. Performances of animals in the two lines were essentially the same. However, ham firmness and color differed significantly (P\u3c0.0l) between lines, with those in the select line firmer and darker than those from the control line.; Swine Day, Manhattan, KS, November, 197
