    Purchasing E‐Books from Life and Physical Science Society Publishers: Trends and Considerations

    This study evaluates e‐book publishing by professional life and physical science societies. In order to be good stewards of their resources, collection managers should always be aware of digital rights management (DRM) restrictions and access issues when contemplating an e‐book purchase. This can be difficult due to the wide variety of publishing models employed by society e‐book publishers. In this study the authors examine various life and physical science societies that publish e‐books, including factors such as DRM and access conditions, and purchasing options. The results provide information for collection managers to consider when purchasing e‐books from society publishers, as well as allows them to advise patrons when access to ebooks may be limited to society members

    Growth And Survival Of Striped Bass And Striped Bass X White Perch Hybrids

    Experiments comparing growth and survival of striped bass (Morvne saxatilis) and striped bass female X white perch (M. americana) male hybrids indicated the hybrids were hardier than striped bass under the same experimental conditions. Striped bass exhibited health problems and resulting mortality which were not evident in the hybrids. Overall survival of striped bass in 2 replicate experiments was 42.5% after II months. whereas that of the hybrids was 84.2%. Striped bass and hybrid growth patterns were similar, but striped bass grew somewhat more rapidly than the latter. Mean specific (instantaneous) growth rates were roughly similar throughout the study. with the major differences occurring during the first 4 months. At 17 months of age the mean hybrid fork length was 227.50101 (range. 167 to 282 0101). This length was approximately equivalent to that of wild populations of white perch with 4 to 8 annuli and to that of mid-Atlantic striped bass with 2 annuli, but was substantially less than that of fresh-water and more southern populations. Hybrid length-weight equations were intermediate between those of striped bass and white perch. Salinity experiments demonstrated that both small (mean fork length, 43 mm) and large (mean fork length. 279 mm) hybrids can survive and grow for indefinite periods at salinities of 18 to 25 0/00 with no signs of stress. We believe that the hybrid may be suitable as a supplement to natural populations of striped bass and white perch in estuaries.https://scholarworks.wm.edu/vimsbooks/1113/thumbnail.jp

    GAGE: generally applicable gene set enrichment for pathway analysis

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Gene set analysis (GSA) is a widely used strategy for gene expression data analysis based on pathway knowledge. GSA focuses on sets of related genes and has established major advantages over individual gene analyses, including greater robustness, sensitivity and biological relevance. However, previous GSA methods have limited usage as they cannot handle datasets of different sample sizes or experimental designs.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>To address these limitations, we present a new GSA method called Generally Applicable Gene-set Enrichment (GAGE). We successfully apply GAGE to multiple microarray datasets with different sample sizes, experimental designs and profiling techniques. GAGE shows significantly better results when compared to two other commonly used GSA methods of GSEA and PAGE. We demonstrate this improvement in the following three aspects: (1) consistency across repeated studies/experiments; (2) sensitivity and specificity; (3) biological relevance of the regulatory mechanisms inferred.</p> <p>GAGE reveals novel and relevant regulatory mechanisms from both published and previously unpublished microarray studies. From two published lung cancer data sets, GAGE derived a more cohesive and predictive mechanistic scheme underlying lung cancer progress and metastasis. For a previously unpublished BMP6 study, GAGE predicted novel regulatory mechanisms for BMP6 induced osteoblast differentiation, including the canonical BMP-TGF beta signaling, JAK-STAT signaling, Wnt signaling, and estrogen signaling pathways–all of which are supported by the experimental literature.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>GAGE is generally applicable to gene expression datasets with different sample sizes and experimental designs. GAGE consistently outperformed two most frequently used GSA methods and inferred statistically and biologically more relevant regulatory pathways.
