    Summary of studies for a solar optical telescope in space: 1968-1976

    The primary objective of this review is to tabulate the basic recommendations of several solar telescope studies. A primary matrix, listing some of the basic optical parameters, was compiled and forms the basis for a table. From this table it is apparent that a strong consensus exists on the configuration of the telescope and on its fundamental dimensionless parameters. Other tables presented in this document address the basic approach of each study to the telescope design as well as to the design of critical subsystems. These subsystem problems include the material, coating, configuration, mounting, launch locks, and thermal control of the primary mirror, the structure of the main telescope and the instrument bay, the mechanisms for radiation rejection, thermal control, and meteoroid shielding, and methods of maintaining image quality by proper alignment and by image motion compensation

    Logarithmic correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy of the BTZ black hole

    We derive an exact expression for the partition function of the Euclidean BTZ black hole. Using this, we show that for a black hole with large horizon area, the correction to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy is −3/2log(Area)-3/2 log(Area), in agreement with that for the Schwarzschild black hole obtained in the canonical gravity formalism and also in a Lorentzian computation of BTZ black hole entropy. We find that the right expression for the logarithmic correction in the context of the BTZ black hole comes from the modular invariance associated with the toral boundary of the black hole.Comment: LaTeX, 10 pages, typos corrected, clarifications adde

    A numerical simulation of the NFAC (National Full-scale Aerodynamics Complex) open-return wind tunnel inlet flow

    The flow into an open return wind tunnel inlet was simulated using Euler equations. An explicit predictor-corrector method was employed to solve the system. The calculation is time-accurate and was performed to achieve a steady-state solution. The predictions are in reasonable agreement with the experimental data. Wall pressures are accurately predicted except in a region of recirculating flow. Flow-field surveys agree qualitatively with laser velocimeter measurements. The method can be used in the design process for open return wind tunnels

    Large-N estimates of universal amplitudes of the CP^{N-1} theory and comparison with the JQ model

    We present computations of certain finite-size scaling functions and universal amplitude ratios in the large-N limit of the CP^{N-1} field theory. We pay particular attention to the uniform susceptibility, the spin stiffness and the specific heat. Field theoretic arguments have shown that the long-wavelength description of the phase transition between the Neel and valence bond solid states in square lattice S=1/2 anti-ferromagnets is expected to be the non-compact CP^1 field theory. We provide a detailed comparison between our field theoretic calculations and quantum Monte Carlo data close to the Neel -VBS transition on a S=1/2 square-lattice model with competing four-spin interactions (the JQ model).Comment: 15 page

    Spontaneous Fluorosis in Indian Buffaloes

    The present study envisaged the appraisal of occurrence of spontaneous fluorosis in buffaloes in 15 villages of Kunkavav, Lathi and Liliya talukas of Amreli district of Gujarat, India. A total of 731 buffaloes were examined in three talukas of Amreli districts. A total of 45 fodder samples, three from each selected villages were collected. Fluoride content of fodder in Kunkavav, Lathi and Liliya taluka was 6.10, 19.28 and 19.74 ppm, respectively. These values were significantly (P<0.05) higher as compared to control (2.32 ppm). The overall prevalence of dental lesions in buffaloes was 31.4, 48.6 and 55.4 percent in Kunkavav, Lathi and Liliya taluka, respectively. A direct correlation between prevalence of dental lesions and fluoride content in fodder was noted. Sex-wise analyses revealed that 33.3% males and 46.6% females had dental lesions. Animals above three years of age were comparatively more susceptible. It might be concluded that fluoride level of 4.76 ppm in fodder samples could produce characteristic dental lesions in animals
