    The effect of funding changes on public sector non-profit organisations: the case of Bushcare NSW

    Research into non-profit organisations abounds, but public sector non-profit organisations have been neglected. Recent funding incentives have led to significant changes in the market environment for such organisations. This study describes market changes and explores the reactions of one environmental public sector non-profit organisation, Bushcare NSW, to these changes. This paper contends that, within this institutional environment, non-profit organisations more successful in attracting large amounts of external funding have better administrative structures in place, whereas those less successful find themselves confronted with burdensome administrative duties. Neo-institutional theory provides a theoretical basis for this empirical investigation. Funding changes have had a major impact on Bushcare organisations, those more successful in attracting grants reporting significantly fewer recent administrative changes

    Assembling an isomer grid: the isomorphous 4-, 3- and 2-fluoro-N'-(4-pyridyl)benzamides

    The three title isomers, 4-, (I), 3-, (II), and 2-fluoro-N'-(4-pyridyl)benzamide, (III), all C₁₂H₉FN₂O, crystallize in the P21/c space group (No. 14) with similar unit-cell parameters and are isomorphous and isostructural at the primary hydrogen-bonding level. An intramolecular C-H...O=C interaction is present in all three isomers [C...O = 2.8681 (17)-2.884 (2) Å and C-H...O117-118°], with an additional N-H...F [N...F = 2.7544 (15) Å] interaction in (III). Intermolecular amide-pyridine N-H...N hydrogen bonds link molecules into one-dimensional zigzag chains [graph set C(6)] along the [010] direction as the primary hydrogen bond [N...N = 3.022 (2), 3.049 (2) and 3.0213 (17) Å]. These are augmented in (I) by C-H...π(arene) and cyclic C-F...π(arene) contacts about inversion centres, in (II) by C-F...F-C interactions [C...F = 3.037 (2) Å] and weaker C-H...π(arene)/C-H...F contacts, and in (III) by C-H...π(arene) and C=O...O=C interactions, linking the alternating chains into two-dimensional sheets. Typical amide N-H...O=C hydrogen bonds [as C(4) chains] are not present [N...O = 3.438 (2) Å in (I), 3.562 (2) Å in (II) and 3.7854 (16) Å in (III)]; the C=O group is effectively shielded and only participates in weaker interactions/contacts. This series is unusual as the three isomers are isomorphous (having similar unit-cell parameters, packing and alignment), but they differ in their interactions and contacts at the secondary level

    Road mitigation tunnels are increasingly deployed for amphibians but very little is known about chemical pollution in such schemes. We assessed pollution pressures associated with road runoff at a major great crested newt mitigation scheme in England. Sediments and waters in the mitigation system were analysed for major physico-chemical parameters, trace metals and total petroleum hydrocarbons and compared to a nearby reference site. Seven out of eight tested metals including copper, zinc, lead and iron were in significantly greater concentrations in the tunnels than at a reference site and at environmentally significant concentrations. Water samples also exhibited elevated concentrations of aluminium and chromium and occasionally extreme alkaline pH associated with leaching of portlandite in tunnel cements. High conductivity values in waters and sediments corresponding with seasonal de-icing salt application were also apparent. The study highlights the potential pollutant pressures for amphibians associated with large-scale urban development and road mitigation schemes

    Frequency-domain waveform approximants capturing Doppler shifts

    Gravitational wave astrophysics has only just begun, and as current detectors are upgraded and new detectors are built, many new, albeit faint, features in the signals will become accessible. One such feature is the presence of time-dependent Doppler shifts, generated by the acceleration of the center of mass of the gravitational-wave emitting system. We here develop a generic method that takes a frequency-domain, gravitational-wave model devoid of Doppler shifts and introduces modifications that incorporate them. Building upon a perturbative expansion that assumes the Doppler-shift velocity is small relative to the speed of light, the method consists of the inclusion of a single term in the Fourier phase and two terms in the Fourier amplitude. We validate the method through matches between waveforms with a Doppler shift in the time domain and waveforms constructed with our method for two toy problems: constant accelerations induced by a distant third body and Gaussian accelerations that resemble a kick profile. We find mismatches below  ⁣106\sim\!10^{-6} for all of the astrophysically relevant cases considered, and improve further at smaller velocities. The work presented here will allow for the use of future detectors to extract new, faint features in the signal from the noise.Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
