Energy Conversion Alternatives Study (ECAS), Westinghouse phase 1. Volume 4: Open recuperated and bottomed gas turbine cycles
Open-cycle recuperated gas turbine plant with inlet temperatures of 1255 to 1644 K (1800 to 2500 F) and recuperators with effectiveness values of 0, 70, 80 and 90% are considered. A 1644 K (2500 F) gas turbine would have a 33.5% plant efficiency in a simple cycle, 37.6% in a recuperated cycle and 47.6% when combined with a sulfur dioxide bottomer. The distillate burning recuperated plant was calculated to produce electricity at a cost of 8.19 mills/MJ (29.5 mills/kWh). Due to their low capital cost /kW, the open cycle gas turbine plant should see duty for peaking and intermediate load duty
Hadron Spectroscopy with COMPASS at CERN
The aim of the COMPASS hadron programme is to study the light-quark hadron
spectrum, and in particular, to search for evidence of hybrids and glueballs.
COMPASS is a fixed-target experiment at the CERN SPS and features a two-stage
spectrometer with high momentum resolution, large acceptance, particle
identification and calorimetry. A short pilot run in 2004 resulted in the
observation of a spin-exotic state with consistent with the
debated . In addition, Coulomb production at low momentum transfer
data provide a test of Chiral Perturbation Theory. During 2008 and 2009, a
world leading data set was collected with hadron beam which is currently being
analysed. The large statistics allows for a thorough decomposition of the data
into partial waves. The COMPASS hadron data span over a broad range of channels

Material Forms: What is Really Going On? Shaping Who We Are and What We Do
Using visual and ethnographic methods the author forms a connection between materiality and the memories of childhood. The researcher begins by asking the question, âCan a studio environment create encounters between a researcher and preschool children that deepen understanding of culture?â To this end, the researcher engaged in sensory research practices through ethnographic methods in a preschool art studio. Through free choice art making, children were found expressing their emotions and demonstrating an awareness of adult culture. In particular, the researcherâs encounter with four-year old George was enriched through sensory participation and triggered embodied and empathetic knowing. As it happens, conducting this research through the shared sensory attributes of art materials, the researcher was sent reeling. The encounter with memories of her childhood were unforeseen and disturbing. Art materials, it appears, can reveal cultural knowledge and can also serve as emotional bookmarks of time. Materials can juxtapose the past with the present, linking then with now. Feeling is embedded in the artifact and can release provocative memories. Materials from childhood create the self for what it is
Good Mourning: Existing with Loss while Living in the Anxious Now
Abstract:
Absence and loss are part of what it means to be alive. While common, grief is a difficult and complex aspect of the human psyche, often producing affects that mask themselves in different forms such as anxiety, anger, despair, and isolation. Able to bring into form the unnamable affects of our psychic lives (Irwin & Springgay, 2008), arts-based research methods can be viable means to transform the grief into something generative. In this paper, each author describes a project that uses a different arts-based research approach to explore a personal experience with grief. Drawing from wordless narrative research (Author A) diffractive ethnography (Gullion, 2018 , and walking currere (Irwin, 2006), these projects seek to make sense of ubiquitous expressions of grief, such as complicated grief, political grief, and ecological grief, to show how they not only can generate new understandings but make empathic connections with others suffering from similar allusive psychic afflictions. The paper highlights the implicit generosity that arts-based research engenders in its ability to make tangible the distressing and ambiguous psychic conditions we experience
Observation of Buried Phosphorus Dopants near Clean Si(100)-(2x1) with Scanning Tunneling Microscopy
We have used scanning tunneling microscopy to identify individual phosphorus
dopant atoms near the clean silicon (100)-(2x1) reconstructed surface. The
charge-induced band bending signature associated with the dopants shows up as
an enhancement in both filled and empty states and is consistent with the
appearance of n-type dopants on compound semiconductor surfaces and passivated
Si(100)-(2x1). We observe dopants at different depths and see a strong
dependence of the signature on the magnitude of the sample voltage. Our results
suggest that, on this clean surface, the antibonding surface state band acts as
an extension of the bulk conduction band into the gap. The positively charged
dimer vacancies that have been observed previously appear as depressions in the
filled states, as opposed to enhancements, because they disrupt these surface
