    Theories about architecture and performance of multi-agent systems

    Multi-agent systems are promising as models of organization because they are based on the idea that most work in human organizations is done based on intelligence, communication, cooperation, and massive parallel processing. They offer an alternative for system theories of organization, which are rather abstract of nature and do not pay attention to the agent level. In contrast, classical organization theories offer a rather rich source of inspiration for developing multi-agent models because of their focus on the agent level. This paper studies the plausibility of theoretical choices in the construction of multi-agent systems. Multi-agent systems have to be plausible from a philosophical, psychological, and organizational point of view. For each of these points of view, alternative theories exist. Philosophically, the organization can be seen from the viewpoints of realism and constructivism. Psychologically, several agent types can be distinguished. A main problem in the construction of psychologically plausible computer agents is the integration of response function systems with representational systems. Organizationally, we study aspects of the architecture of multi-agent systems, namely topology, system function decomposition, coordination and synchronization of agent processes, and distribution of knowledge and language characteristics among agents. For each of these aspects, several theoretical perspectives exist.

    Worrying Affects Associative Fear Learning: A Startle Fear Conditioning Study

    A valuable experimental model for the pathogenesis of anxiety disorders is that they originate from a learned association between an intrinsically non-aversive event (Conditioned Stimulus, CS) and an anticipated disaster (Unconditioned Stimulus, UCS). Most anxiety disorders, however, do not evolve from a traumatic experience. Insights from neuroscience show that memory can be modified post-learning, which may elucidate how pathological fear can develop after relatively mild aversive events. Worrying - a process frequently observed in anxiety disorders - is a potential candidate to strengthen the formation of fear memory after learning. Here we tested in a discriminative fear conditioning procedure whether worry strengthens associative fear memory. Participants were randomly assigned to either a Worry (n = 23) or Control condition (n = 25). After fear acquisition, the participants in the Worry condition processed six worrisome questions regarding the personal aversive consequences of an electric stimulus (UCS), whereas the Control condition received difficult but neutral questions. Subsequently, extinction, reinstatement and re-extinction of fear were tested. Conditioned responding was measured by fear-potentiated startle (FPS), skin conductance (SCR) and UCS expectancy ratings. Our main results demonstrate that worrying resulted in increased fear responses (FPS) to both the feared stimulus (CS+) and the originally safe stimulus (CS−), whereas FPS remained unchanged in the Control condition. In addition, worrying impaired both extinction and re-extinction learning of UCS expectancy. The implication of our findings is that they show how worry may contribute to the development of anxiety disorders by affecting associative fear learning

    Quality of life of parents with children living at home: when one parent has cancer

    Goals of work This study examined the quality of life (QoL) of cancer patients diagnosed 1-5 years previously and their spouses, with children 4-18 years living at home. Relationships between parents' QoL and the children's functioning were explored. Patients and methods 166 cancer patients and their spouses provided information on their QoL (RAND-36) and on their children's functioning (Child Behavior Checklist). Main results Male and female patients scored similarly to a norm population on five domains. Patients' QoL was clinically relevantly and/or statistically lower on social functioning, role limitations because of physical problems, and vitality than the norm. Male spouses' QoL was comparable to the norm. However, female spouses reported better physical functioning but more social problems. QoL varied according to type of cancer, treatment intensity, and recurrence. Using the QoL composite scores, a significant relationship was found between patients' psychosocial and physical functioning and spouses' psychosocial functioning. Patients' psychosocial functioning correlated moderately strongly to weakly with their reports of their younger children's and adolescents' functioning; physical functioning correlated only weakly with adolescents' functioning. The patients' functioning related weakly to moderately strongly to adolescents' self-reports of functioning. Spouses' psychosocial functioning weakly related to their and adolescents' reports of adolescents' functioning. Conclusion Cancer patients' QoL 1-5 years after diagnosis was decreased in three of eight domains; their spouses seem to be doing well. Parents' physical and psychosocial functioning related weakly to moderately strongly to their children's functioning, depending on the child's age and information source. The patients' functioning related more strongly to the children's functioning than the spouses' did
