    Photoionization of the Ne-like Si4+ ion in ground and metastable states in the 110–184-eV photon energy range

    We present measurements of the absolute photoionization cross section of the neonlike Si4+ ion over the 110–184 eV photon energy range. The measurements were performed using two independent merged-beam setups at the super-ACO and ASTRID synchrotron-radiation facilities, respectively. Signals produced in the photoionization of the 2p subshell of the Si4+ ion both from the 2p6 1S0 ground state and the 2p53s 3P0,2 metastable levels were observed. Calculations of the 2p photoionization cross sections were carried out using a multi-configuration Dirac-Fock code. They give results in good agreement with the measured spectra. Comparison with other available theoretical results is also presented

    Preliminary design of the RF systems for the SPIRAL2 LINAC

    International audienceIn the SPIRAL 2 Linac, a 5 mA, CW, Deuteron beam is accelerated up to 40 MeV, through a normal conducting (NC) RFQ and 26 independent-phase superconducting (SC) quarter wave resonators, working at 88.05 MHz. Tube and solid state amplifiers derived from the standard FM transmitter modules are foreseen while a new digital control system is being designed for the feed-back and feed-forward amplitude and phase control.. The paper presents the power and low level systems for both the NC and SC cavities and results of simulations of the RF system in operating conditions

    What are the limits to oil palm expansion?

    Palm oil production has boomed over the last decade, resulting in an expansion of the global oil palm planting area from 10 to 17 Million hectares between 2000 and 2012. Previous studies showed that a significant share of this expansion has come at the expense of tropical forests, notably in Indonesia and Malaysia, the current production centers. Governments of developing and emerging countries in all tropical regions increasingly promote oil palm cultivation as a major contributor to poverty alleviation, as well as food and energy independence. However, being under pressure from several nongovernmental environmental organizations and consumers, the main palm oil traders have committed to sourcing sustainable palm oil. Against this backdrop we assess the area of suitable land and what are the limits to future oil palm expansion when several constraints are considered. We find that suitability is mainly determined by climatic conditions resulting in 1.37 billion hectares of suitable land for oil palm cultivation concentrated in twelve tropical countries. However, we estimate that half of the biophysically suitable area is already allocated to other uses, including protected areas which cover 30% of oil palm suitable area. Our results also highlight that the non-conversion of high carbon stock forest (>100 tC/ha) would be the most constraining for future oil palm expansion as it would exclude two-thirds of global oil palm suitable area. Combining eight criteria which might restrict future land availability for oil palm expansion, we find that 234 million hectares or 17% of worldwide suitable area are left. This might seem that the limits for oil palm expansion are far from being reached but one needs to take into account that some of this area might be hardly accessible currently with only 18% of this remaining area being under 2 hours transportation to the closest city- and that growing demand for other agricultural commodities which might also compete for this land has not been yet taken into account

    Field emission in ordered arrays of ZnO nanowires prepared by nanosphere lithography and extended Fowler-Nordheim analyses

    A multistage chemical method based on nanosphere lithography was used to produce hexagonally patterned arrays of ZnO vertical nanowires, with 1 lm interspacing and aspect ratio 20, with a view to study the effects of emitter uniformity on the current emitted upon application of a dc voltage across a 250 lm vacuum gap. A new treatment, based on the use of analytical expressions for the image-potential correction functions, was applied to the linear region below 2000 V of the Fowler-Nordheim (FN) plot and showed the most suitable value of the work function / in the range 3.3–4.5 eV (conduction band emission) with a Schottky lowering parameter y ~ 0.72 and a field enhancement factor c in the 700–1100 range. A modeled c value of 200 was calculated for an emitter shape of a prolate ellipsoid of revolution and also including the effect of nanowire screening, in fair agreement with the experimental value. The Fowler-Nordheim current densities and effective emission areas were derived as 1011 Am2 and 1017 m2, respectively, showing that field emission likely takes place in an area of atomic dimensions at the tip of the emitter. Possible causes for the observed departure from linear FN plot behavior above 2000 V were discussed

    The land use change impact of biofuels consumed in the EU: Quantification of area and greenhouse gas impacts

    Biofuels are promoted as an option to reduce climate emissions from the transport sector. As most biofuels are currently produced from land based crops, there is a concern that the increased consumption of biofuels requires agricultural expansion at a global scale, leading to additional carbon emissions. This effect is called Indirect Land Use Change, or ILUC. The EU Renewable Energy Directive (2009/28/EC) directed the European Commission to develop a methodology to account for the ILUC effect. The current study serves to provide new insights to the European Commission and other stakeholders about these indirect carbon and land impacts from biofuels consumed in the EU, with more details on production processes and representation of individual feedstocks than was done before. ILUC cannot be observed or measured in reality, because it is entangled with a large number of other changes in agricultural markets at both global and local levels. The effect can only be estimated through the use of models. The current study is part of a continuous effort to improve the understanding and representation of ILUC

    Absolute photoionization cross sections and resonance structure of doubly ionized silicon in the region of the 2p-1 threshold: experiment and theory

    We present the absolute photoionization cross section of doubly ionized silicon as a function of photon energy. These were obtained by merging a Si2+ ion beam generated in an electron cyclotron resonance source with monochromatized synchrotron radiation from an undulator. The photoion yield measurements were carried out in the photon energy range between 95 eV and 170 eV, i.e., the region corresponding to the excitation followed by the ionization (threshold ∌133.8eV) of an inner-subshell 2p electron. Resonance structure due to 2p excitation in the 2p63s3p3P metastable state was also observed with its contribution to the total cross section not exceeding 3%. Calculation of the 2p photoionization continuum cross section as a function of photon energy was carried out using the relativistic random-phase approximation (RRPA) and agreed very well with the corresponding measurements. The resonance structure in the 3s cross section below the 2p threshold was found to be in good agreement with the multiconfiguration atomic structure calculations of Sayyad et al. [J. Phys. B 28, 1715 (1995)], while the corresponding RRPA-RMQDT (relativistic multi-channel quantum-defect theory) calculations proved less successful

    Determining a Carbon Reference Level for a High-Forest-Low-Deforestation Country

    Research Highlights: A transparent approach to developing a forest reference emissions level (FREL) adjusted to future local developments in Southern Cameroon is demonstrated. Background and Objectives: Countries with low historical deforestation can adjust their forest reference (emission) level (FREL/FRL) upwards for REDD+ to account for likely future developments. Many countries, however, find it difficult to establish a credible adjusted reference level. This article demonstrates the establishment of a FREL for southern Cameroon adjusted to societal megatrends of strong population—and economic growth combined with rapid urbanization. It demonstrates what can be done with available information and data, but most importantly outlines pathways to further improve the quality of future FREL/FRL’s in light of possibly accessing performance-based payments. Materials and Methods: The virtual FREL encompasses three main elements: Remotely sensed activity data; emission factors derived from the national forest inventory; and the adjustment of the reference level using a land use model of the agriculture sector. Sensitivity analysis is performed on all three elements using Monte Carlo methods. Results: Deforestation during the virtual reference period 2000–2015 is dominated by non-industrial agriculture (comprising both smallholders and local elites) and increases over time. The land use model projections are consistent with this trend, resulting in emissions that are on average 47% higher during the virtual performance period 2020–2030 than during the reference period 2000–2015. Monte Carlo analysis points to the adjustment term as the main driver of uncertainty in the FREL calculation. Conclusions: The available data is suitable for constructing a FREL for periodic reporting to the UNFCCC. Enhanced coherence of input data notably for activity data and adjustment is needed to apply for a performance-based payment scheme. Expanding the accounting framework to include forest degradation and forest gain are further priorities requiring future research
