    Charged Black Hole in a Canonical Ensemble

    We consider the thermodynamics of a charged black hole enclosed in a cavity. The charge in the cavity and the temperature at the walls are fixed so that we have a canonical ensemble. We derive the phase structure and stability of black hole equilibrium states. We compare our results to that of other work which uses asymptotically anti-de Sitter boundary conditions to define the thermodynamics. The thermodynamic properties have extensive similarities which suggest that the idea of AdS holography is more dependent on the existence of the boundary than on the exact details of asymptotically AdS metrics.Comment: 9 pages; 4 multipart figure

    A Quantum Adiabatic Evolution Algorithm Applied to Random Instances of an NP-Complete Problem

    A quantum system will stay near its instantaneous ground state if the Hamiltonian that governs its evolution varies slowly enough. This quantum adiabatic behavior is the basis of a new class of algorithms for quantum computing. We test one such algorithm by applying it to randomly generated, hard, instances of an NP-complete problem.     Distribution of an Exotic Pest, \u3ci\u3eAgromyza Frontella\u3c/i\u3e (Diptera: Agromyzidae), in Manitoba, Canada.

    Agromyza frontella is an exotic alfalfa pest from Europe that was first detected in North America in 1968 and has since spread westward into Ontario and the north central United States. Informal surveys had detected A. frontella in Manitoba, but its distribution throughout this province was unknown. In 1998 we collected alfalfa stems to detect plant damage and sweep samples to detect adult A. frontella and the parasitoid Dacnusa dryas throughout the alfalfa growing region of Manitoba. In south central Manitoba, 100% of stems were damaged by A. frontella, and\u3e 100 adults/10 sweeps were recorded at several sites. In west central Manitoba, no plants were damaged and \u3c 10 adults/10 sweeps were observed. We believe this region to be near the western edge of A. frontella distribution. The most important introduced parasitoid of A. frontella, D. dryas, was not detected which suggests that D. dryas has not invaded Manitoba

    Memory and superposition in a spin glass

    Non-equilibrium dynamics in a Ag(Mn) spin glass are investigated by measurements of the temperature dependence of the remanent magnetisation. Using specific cooling protocols before recording the thermo- or isothermal remanent magnetisations on re-heating, it is found that the measured curves effectively disclose non-equilibrium spin glass characteristics such as ageing and memory phenomena as well as an extended validity of the superposition principle for the relaxation. The usefulness of this "simple" dc-method is discussed, as well as its applicability to other disordered magnetic systems.Comment: REVTeX style; 8 pages, 4 figure

    Core-Level Satellite Excitations of K/Al(100) and K/Al(111)

    Alkali-metal-induced satellite peaks associated with the K 3p and Al 2p core levels have been measured with photoemission for K/Al(111) and K/Al(100) under both low- and room-temperature preparation conditions. For low-temperature deposition we observedddd loss peaks in good agreement with electron-energy-loss spectroscopy studies of analogous systems which we assign to the excitation of collective plasmonlike modes in the alkali-metal overlayer. For room-temperature preparation conditions, we observed significant changes in the satellite loss structure which we attribute to a decrease or loss of metallic behavior in the alkali-metal layer. We account for some of our results as a change in bonding configuration of the K atoms from on-top-of surface to substitutional adsorption for low versus room-temperature preparations

    Aging dynamics in reentrant ferromagnet: Cu0.2_{0.2}Co0.8_{0.8}Cl2_{2}-FeCl3_{3} graphite bi-intercalation compound

    Aging dynamics of a reentrant ferromagnet Cu0.2_{0.2}Co0.8_{0.8}Cl2_{2}-FeCl3_{3} graphite bi-intercalation compound has been studied using AC and DC magnetic susceptibility. This compound undergoes successive transitions at the transition temperatures TcT_{c} (=9.7= 9.7 K) and TRSGT_{RSG} (=3.5= 3.5 K). The relaxation rate S(t)S(t) exhibits a characteristic peak at tcrt_{cr} close to a wait time twt_{w} below TcT_{c}, indicating that the aging phenomena occur in both the reentrant spin glass (RSG) phase below TRSGT_{RSG} and the ferromagnetic (FM) phase between TRSGT_{RSG} and TcT_{c}. The relaxation rate S(t)S(t) (=dχZFC(t)/dlnt=\text{d}\chi_{ZFC}(t)/\text{d}\ln t) in the FM phase exhibits two peaks around twt_{w} and a time much shorter than twt_{w} under the positive TT-shift aging, indicating a partial rejuvenation of domains. The aging state in the FM phase is fragile against a weak magnetic-field perturbation. The time (tt) dependence of χZFC(t)\chi_{ZFC}(t) around ttcrt \approx t_{cr} is well approximated by a stretched exponential relaxation: χZFC(t)exp[(t/τ)1n]\chi_{ZFC}(t) \approx \exp[-(t/\tau)^{1-n}]. The exponent nn depends on twt_{w}, TT, and HH. The relaxation time τ\tau (tcr\approx t_{cr}) exhibits a local maximum around 5 K, reflecting a chaotic nature of the FM phase.     Kinetic hindrance during the initial oxidation of Pd(100) at ambient pressures

    The oxidation of the Pd(100) surface at oxygen pressures in the 10^-6 to 10^3 mbar range and temperatures up to 1000 K has been studied in-situ by surface x-ray diffraction (SXRD). The results provide direct structural information on the phases present in the surface region and on the kinetics of the oxide formation. Depending on the (T,p) environmental conditions we either observe a thin sqrt(5) x sqrt(5) R27 surface oxide or the growth of a rough, poorly ordered bulk oxide film of PdO predominantly with (001) orientation. By either comparison to the surface phase diagram from first-principles atomistic thermodynamics or by explicit time-resolved measurements we identify a strong kinetic hindrance to the bulk oxide formation even at temperatures as high as 675 K.Comment: 4 pages including 4 figures, Related publications can be found at http://www.fhi-berlin.mpg.de/th/paper.htm

    Scaling Law and Aging Phenomena in the Random Energy Model

    We study the effect of temperature shift on aging phenomena in the Random Energy Model (REM). From calculation on the correlation function and simulation on the Zero-Field-Cooled magnetization, we find that the REM satisfies a scaling relation even if temperature is shifted.
