Effect of varying material anisotropy on critical current anistropy in vicinal YBa2_2Cu3_3O7−δ_{7-\delta} thin films

The high TcT_{c} cuprate superconductors are noted for their anisotropic layered structure, certain of these materials indeed tend toward the limit of a Lawrence-Doniach superconductor. However, YBa2_2Cu3_3O7−δ_{7-\delta} has a smaller anisotropy than would be expected from its interlayer spacing. This is due to the cuprate chains in the structure. To investigate the influence of the chain oxygen on transport properties critical current versus applied field angle measurements were performed on fully oxygenated and de-oxygenated YBa2_2Cu3_3O7−δ_{7-\delta} thin films and optimally oxygenated Y0.75_{0.75}Ca0.2_{0.2}Ba2_2Cu3_3O7−δ_{7-\delta} thin films. The films were grown on 10∘^{\circ} mis-cut SrTiO3_3 substrates to enable the intrinsic vortex channelling effect to be observed. The form of the vortex channelling minimum observed in field angle dependent critical current studies on the films was seen to depend on film oxygenation. The vortex channelling effect is dependent on a angular dependent cross-over to a string-pancake flux line lattice. The results obtained appear to be consistent with the prediction of Blatter et al. [Rev. Mod. Phys., 66 (4): 1125 (1994)] that increased superconducting anisotropy leads to the kinked string-pancake lattice existing over a smaller angular range.Comment: To be submitted to AP

Characterization of nano-composite M-2411/Y-123 thin films by electron backscatter diffraction and in-field critical current measurements

Thin films of nano-composite Y-Ba-Cu-O (YBCO) superconductors containing nano-sized, non-superconducting particles of Y2Ba 4CuMOx (M-2411 with M = Ag and Nb) have been prepared by the PLD technique. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) has been used to analyze the crystallographic orientation of nano-particles embedded in the film microstructure. The superconducting YBa2Cu3O7 (Y-123) phase matrix is textured with a dominant (001) orientation for all samples, whereas the M-2411 phase exhibits a random orientation. Angular critical current measurements at various temperature (T) and applied magnetic field (B) have been performed on thin films containing different concentration of the M-2411 second phase. An increase in critical current density J c at T < 77 K and B < 6 T is observed for samples with low concentration of the second phase (2 mol % M-2411). Films containing 5 mol % Ag-2411 exhibit lower Jc than pure Y-123 thin films at all fields and temperatures. Samples with 5 mol % Nb-2411 show higher Jc(B) than phase pure Y-123 thin films for T < 77 K

Angle-dependence of the Hall effect in HgBa2CaCu2O6 thin films

Superconducting compounds of the family Hg-Ba-Ca-Cu-O have been the subject of intense study since the current record-holder for the highest critical temperature of a superconductor belongs to this class of materials. Thin films of the compound with two adjacent copper-oxide layers and a critical temperature of about 120 K were prepared by a two-step process that consists of the pulsed-laser deposition of precursor films and the subsequent annealing in mercury-vapor atmosphere. Like some other high-temperature superconductors, Hg-Ba-Ca-Cu-O exhibits a specific anomaly of the Hall effect, a double-sign change of the Hall coefficient close to the superconducting transition. We have investigated this phenomenon by measurements of the Hall effect at different angles between the magnetic field direction and the crystallographic c-axis. The results concerning the upper part of the transition, where the first sign change occurs, are discussed in terms of the renormalized fluctuation model for the Hall conductivity, adapted through the field rescaling procedure in order to take into account the arbitrary orientation of the magnetic field.Comment: to be published in Phys. This is the author's accepted manuscript. The final published article is available from the link below. Copyright @ EPLA, 2008.Enhanced self-field critical current density Jc of novel, high-temperature superconducting thin films is reported. Layers are deposited on (001) MgO substrates by laser ablation of YBa2Cu3O7−δ(Y-123) ceramics containing Y2Ba4CuMOx (M-2411, M=Ag, Nb, Ru, Zr) nano-particles. The Jc of films depends on the secondary-phase content of the ceramic targets, which was varied between 0 and 15 mol%. Composite layers (2 mol% of Ag-2411 and Nb-2411) exhibit Jc values at 77 K of up to 5.1 MA/cm2, which is 3 to 4 times higher than those observed in films deposited from phase pure Y-123 ceramics. Nb-2411 grows epitaxially in the composite layers and the estimated crystallite size is ~10 nm.The Austrian Science Fund, the Austrian Federal Ministry of Economics and Labour, the European Science Foundation and the Higher Education Commission of Pakistan

Double sign reversal of the vortex Hall effect in YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films in the strong pinning limit of low magnetic fields

Measurements of the Hall effect and the resistivity in twinned YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films in magnetic fields B oriented parallel to the crystallographic c-axis and to the twin boundaries reveal a double sign reversal of the Hall coefficient for B below 1 T. In high transport current densities, or with B tilted off the twin boundaries by 5 degrees, the second sign reversal vanishes. The power-law scaling of the Hall conductivity to the longitudinal conductivity in the mixed state is strongly modified in the regime of the second sign reversal. Our observations are interpreted as strong, disorder-type dependent vortex pinning and confirm that the Hall conductivity in high temperature superconductors is not independent of pinning.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
