Supporting group maintenance through prognostics-enhanced dynamic dependability prediction
Condition-based maintenance strategies adapt maintenance planning through the integration of online condition monitoring of assets. The accuracy and cost-effectiveness of these strategies can be improved by integrating prognostics predictions and grouping maintenance actions respectively. In complex industrial systems, however, effective condition-based maintenance is intricate. Such systems are comprised of repairable assets which can fail in different ways, with various effects, and typically governed by dynamics which include time-dependent and conditional events. In this context, system reliability prediction is complex and effective maintenance planning is virtually impossible prior to system deployment and hard even in the case of condition-based maintenance. Addressing these issues, this paper presents an online system maintenance method that takes into account the system dynamics. The method employs an online predictive diagnosis algorithm to distinguish between critical and non-critical assets. A prognostics-updated method for predicting the system health is then employed to yield well-informed, more accurate, condition-based suggestions for the maintenance of critical assets and for the group-based reactive repair of non-critical assets. The cost-effectiveness of the approach is discussed in a case study from the power industry
Measurement of spontaneous emission from a two-dimensional photonic band gap defined microcavity at near-infrared wavelengths
An active, photonic band gap-based microcavity emitter in the near infrared is demonstrated. We present direct measurement of the spontaneous emission power and spectrum from a microcavity formed using a two-dimensional photonic band gap structure in a half wavelength thick slab waveguide. The appearance of cavity resonance peaks in the spectrum correspond to the photonic band gap energy. For detuned band gaps, no resonances are observed. For devices with correctly tuned band gaps, a two-time enhancement of the extraction efficiency was demonstrated compared to detuned band gaps and unpatterned material
Fluorescence and Hybrid Detection Aperture of the Pierre Auger Observatory
The aperture of the Fluorescence Detector (FD) of the Pierre Auger
Observatory is evaluated from simulated events using different detector
configurations: mono, stereo, 3-FD and 4-FD. The trigger efficiency has been
modeled using shower profiles with ground impacts in the field of view of a
single telescope and studying the trigger response (at the different levels) by
that telescope and by its neighbours. In addition, analysis cuts imposed by
event reconstruction have been applied. The hybrid aperture is then derived for
the Auger final extension. Taking into account the actual Surface Detector (SD)
array configuration and its trigger response, the aperture is also calculated
for a typical configuration of the present phase.Comment: contribution to the 29th International Cosmic Ray Conference, Pune,

A cost-benefit approach for the evaluation of prognostics-updated maintenance strategies in complex dynamic systems
The implementation of maintenance strategies which integrate online condition data has the potential to increase availability and reduce maintenance costs. Prognostics techniques enable the implementation of these strategies through up-to-date remaining useful life estimations. However, a cost-benefit assessment is necessary to verify the scale of potential benefits of condition-based maintenance strategies and prognostics for a given application. The majority of prognostics applications focus on the evaluation of a specific failure mode of an asset. However, industrial systems are comprised of different assets with multiple failure modes, which in turn, work in cooperation to perform a system level function. Besides, these systems include time-dependent events and conditional triggering events which cause further effects on the system. In this context not only are the system-level prognostics predictions challenging, but also the cost-benefit analysis of condition-based maintenance policies. In this work we combine asset prognostics predictions with temporal logic so as to obtain an up-to-date system level health estimation. We use asset level and system level prognostics estimations to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of alternative maintenance policies. The application of the proposed approach enables the adoption of conscious trade-off decisions between alternative maintenance strategies for complex systems. The benefits of the proposed approach are discussed with a case study from the power industry
Optical Relative Calibration and Stability Monitoring for the Auger Fluorescence Detector
The stability of the fluorescence telescopes of the Pierre Auger Observatory
is monitored with the optical relative calibration setup. Optical fibers
distribute light pulses to three different diffuser groups within the optical
system. The total charge per pulse is measured for each pixel and compared with
reference calibration measurements. This allows monitoring the short and long
term stability with respect of the relative timing between pixels and the
relative gain for each pixel. The designs of the LED calibration unit (LCU) and
of the Xenon flash lamp used for relative calibration, are described and their
capabilities to monitor the stability of the telescope performances are
studied. We report the analysis of relative calibration data recorded during
2004. Fluctuations in the relative calibration constants provide a measure of
the stability of the FD.Comment: 4 pp. To appear in the proceedings of 29th International Cosmic Ray

An Experimental Method for Stereolithic Mandible Fabrication and Image Preparation
Reproduction of anatomical structures by rapid prototyping has proven to be a valid adjunct for craniofacial surgery, providing alternative methods to produce prostheses and development of surgical guides. The aim of this study was to introduce a methodology to fabricate asymmetric human mandibles by rapid prototyping to be used in future studies for evaluating mandibular symmetries. Stereolithic models of human mandibles were produced with varying amounts of asymmetry in the condylar neck, ramus and body of the mandible by means of rapid prototyping. A method for production of the synthetic mandibles was defined. Model preparation, landmark description and development of the experimental model were described. A series of synthetic mandibles ranging in asymmetry were accurately produced from a scanned human mandible. A method for creating the asymmetries, fabricating, coating and landmarking the synthetic mandibles was formulated. A description for designing a reproducible experimental model for image acquisition was also outlined. Production of synthetic mandibles by stereolithic modeling is a viable method for creating skeletal experimental models with known amounts of asymmetry
A lower limit for Newtonian-noise models of the Einstein Telescope
The Einstein Telescope (ET) is a proposed third-generation gravitational-wave (GW) underground observatory. It will have greatly increased sensitivity compared to current GW detectors, and it is designed to extend the observation band down to a few Hz. At these frequencies, a major limitation of the ET sensitivity is predicted to be due to gravitational fluctuations produced by the environment, most importantly by the seismic field, which give rise to the so-called Newtonian noise (NN). Accurate models of ET NN are crucial to assess the compatibility of an ET candidate site with the ET sensitivity target also considering a possible reduction in NN by noise cancellation. With NN models becoming increasingly complex as they include details of geology and topography, it is crucial to have tools to make robust assessments of their accuracy. For this purpose, we derive a lower bound on seismic NN spectra, which is weakly dependent on geology and properties of the seismic field. As a first application, we use the lower limit to compare it with NN estimates recently calculated for the Sardinia and Euregio Meuse-Rhine (EMR) candidate sites. We find the utility of the method, which shows an inconsistency with the predictions for the EMR site, which indicates that ET NN models require further improvement
Centaurus A at Ultra-High Energies
We review the importance of Centaurus A in high energy astrophysics as a
nearby object with many of the properties expected of a major source of very
high energy cosmic rays and gamma-rays. We examine observational techniques and
the results so far obtained in the energy range from 200 GeV to above 100 EeV
and attempt to fit those data with expectations of Centaurus A as an
astrophysical source from VHE to UHE energies.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in PAS
