    Candidates for l’Ecriture Feminine: Analyses of Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Woolf’s Night and Day, and Morrison’s Sula

    This thesis discusses HĂ©lĂšne Cixous’ ideas on feminine literature, as expressed in her article, “The Laugh of Medusa,” and attempts to apply the goals that she sets out for what feminine literature must look like in order to develop the literary cannon to the novel. In an attempt to pull away from traditional patriarchal images and expectations of feminine lifestyles, I join Cixous’ call for the marginalized to inscribe their voices into the cannon for themselves, and argue that representation of such images in literature is necessary to the development of our biased perceptions to more authentically represent typically marginalized groups. I examine three examples, Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, Woolf’s Night and Day, and Morrison’s Sula, which I argue to be historical examples of novels that both portray and question the limits that patriarchal structure places on femininity. In each of these works, I discuss female characters and their relationships with parental figures, other women, and romantic interests, where preconceptions of femininity based on patriarchal tradition are present, and suggest how these characters are able to show a more nuanced representation of feminine identity. As boundaries placed on women have evolved over time, as have our preconceptions of femininity, and the perspective from within marginalized positions within symbolic order must be shared in order to continue the development of meanings understood within our culture

    Online dashboards for SARS-CoV-2 wastewater data need standard best practices: An environmental health communication agenda

    The COVID-19 pandemic has highlighted the benefits of wastewater surveillance to supplement clinical data. Numerous online information dashboards have been rapidly, and typically independently, developed to communicate environmental surveillance data to public health officials and the public. In this study, we review dashboards presenting SARS-CoV-2 wastewater data and propose a path toward harmonization and improved risk communication. A list of 127 dashboards representing 27 countries was compiled. The variability was high and encompassed aspects including the graphics used for data presentation (e.g., line/bar graphs, maps, and tables), log versus linear scale, and 96 separate ways of labeling SARS-CoV-2 wastewater concentrations. Globally, dashboard presentations also differed by region. Approximately half of the dashboards presented clinical case data, and 25% presented variant monitoring. Only 30% of dashboards provided downloadable source data. While any single dashboard is likely useful in its own context and locality, the high variation across dashboards at best prevents optimal use of wastewater surveillance data on a broader geographical scale and at worst could lead to risk communication issues and the potential for public health miscommunication. There is a great opportunity to improve scientific communication through the adoption of uniform data presentation conventions, standards, and best practices in this field

    Vulnerabilities of the Artificial Pancreas System and Proposed Cryptographic Solutions

    Type I Diabetes Mellitus is the most common form of diabetes in people under the age of 30. Current treatment for Type I Diabetes Mellitus includes lifelong monitoring of blood glucose levels and administration of insulin injections, but medical advances in the hybrid closed-loop artificial pancreas are a possible improvement in the maintenance of this disease. Our goal is to build a simulation of the artificial pancreas using three Raspberry Pi computers and an implementation of the OpenAPS algorithm. We will also build an artificial pancreas system using two Raspberry Pi computers, a Medtronic insulin pump, and an implementation of the OpenAPS algorithm. We are investigating the vulnerabilities of the two artificial pancreas systems by using common hacking resources such as Kali Linux equipped with Wireshark and other tools. One challenge with securing the artificial pancreas system and other implantable medical devices is the limitations of the computational power and energy storage. Through an analysis of the vulnerabilities of the system, we will design and perform experiments to propose a lightweight cryptographic algorithm that ensures the security of the data transmissions while operating with constrained resources

    Muscular strength across the life course: The tracking and trajectory patterns of muscular strength between childhood and mid-adulthood in an Australian cohort

    ObjectivesLow muscular strength is a risk factor for current and future adverse health outcomes. However, whether levels of muscular strength persist, or track, and if there are distinct muscular strength trajectories across the life course is unclear. This study aimed to explore muscular strength trajectories between childhood and mid-adulthood.DesignProspective longitudinal study.MethodsChildhood Determinants of Adult Health Study participants had their muscular strength (right and left handgrip, shoulder extension and flexion, and leg strength measured by hand-held, shoulder and leg-back dynamometers, and a combined strength score) assessed in childhood, young adulthood and mid-adulthood. The tracking of muscular strength was quantified between childhood and mid-adulthood (n = 385) and young- and mid-adulthood (n = 822). Muscular strength trajectory patterns were identified for participants who had their muscular strength assessed at least twice across the life course (n = 1280).ResultsLevels of muscular strength were persistent between childhood and mid-adulthood and between young- and mid-adulthood, with the highest tracking correlations observed for the combined strength score (childhood to mid-adulthood: r = 0.47, p ConclusionsWeak children are likely to become weak adults in midlife unless strategies aimed at increasing muscular strength levels are introduced. Whether interventions aimed at increasing muscular strength could be implemented in childhood to help establish favourable muscular strength trajectories across the life course and in turn, better future health, warrant further attention.</p

    The Association Between Grip Strength Measured in Childhood, Young- and Mid-adulthood and Prediabetes or Type 2 Diabetes in Mid-adulthood

    Background Although low child and adult grip strength is associated with adverse cardiometabolic health, how grip strength across the life course associates with type 2 diabetes is unknown. This study identified the relative contribution of grip strength measured at specific life stages (childhood, young adulthood, mid-adulthood) with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes in mid-adulthood.Methods Between 1985 and 2019, 263 participants had their grip strength measured using an isometric dynamometer in childhood (9-15 years), young adulthood (28-36 years) and mid-adulthood (38-49 years). In mid-adulthood, a fasting blood sample was collected and tested for glucose and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c). Participants were categorized as having prediabetes or type 2 diabetes if fasting glucose levels were >= 5.6 mmol or if HbA1c levels were >= 5.7% (>= 39 mmol/mol). A Bayesian relevant life course exposure model examined the association between lifelong grip strength and prediabetes or type 2 diabetes.Results Grip strength at each time point was equally associated with prediabetes or type 2 diabetes in mid-adulthood (childhood: 37%, young adulthood: 36%, mid-adulthood: 28%). A one standard deviation increase in cumulative grip strength was associated with 34% reduced odds of prediabetes or type 2 diabetes in mid-adulthood (OR 0.66, 95% credible interval 0.40, 0.98).Conclusions Greater grip strength across the life course could protect against the development of prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. Strategies aimed at increasing muscular strength in childhood and maintaining behaviours to improve strength into adulthood could improve future cardiometabolic health.</div

    Pyoderma gangrenosum after totally implanted central venous access device insertion

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Pyoderma gangrenosum is an aseptic skin disease. The ulcerative form of pyoderma gangrenosum is characterized by a rapidly progressing painful irregular and undermined bordered necrotic ulcer. The aetiology of pyoderma gangrenosum remains unclear. In about 70% of cases, it is associated with a systemic disorder, most often inflammatory bowel disease, haematological disease or arthritis. In 25–50% of cases, a triggering factor such as recent surgery or trauma is identified. Treatment consists of local and systemic approaches. Systemic steroids are generally used first. If the lesions are refractory, steroids are combined with other immunosuppressive therapy or to antimicrobial agents.</p> <p>Case presentation</p> <p>A 90 years old patient with myelodysplastic syndrome, seeking regular transfusions required totally implanted central venous access device (Port-a-Cath<sup>¼</sup>) insertion. Fever and inflammatory skin reaction at the site of insertion developed on the seventh post-operative day, requiring the device's explanation. A rapid progression of the skin lesions evolved into a circular skin necrosis. Intravenous steroid treatment stopped the necrosis' progression.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Early diagnosis remains the most important step to the successful treatment of pyoderma gangrenosum.</p
