Non-local two-photon correlations using interferometers physically separated by 35 meters
An experimental demonstration of quantum correlations is presented. Energy
and time entangled photons at wavelengths of 704 and 1310 nm are produced by
parametric downconversion in KNbO3 and are sent through optical fibers into a
bulk-optical (704 nm) and an all-fiber Michelson-interferometer (1310 nm),
respectively. The two interferometers are located 35 meters aside from one
another. Using Faraday-mirrors in the fiber-interferometer, all birefringence
effects in the fibers are automatically compensated. We obtained two-photon
fringe visibilities of up to 95 % from which one can project a violation of
Bell's inequality by 8 standard deviations. The good performance and the
auto-aligning feature of Faraday-mirror interferometers show their potential
for a future test of Bell's inequalities in order to examine
quantum-correlations over long distances.Comment: 9 pages including 3 postscript figures, to be published in Europhys.

Long-distance Bell-type tests using energy-time entangled photons
Long-distance Bell-type experiments are presented. The different experimental
challenges and their solutions in order to maintain the strong quantum
correlations between energy-time entangled photons over more than 10 km are
reported and the results analyzed from the point of view of tests of
fundamental physics as well as from the more applied side of quantum
communication, specially quantum key distribution. Tests using more than one
analyzer on each side are also presented.Comment: 22 pages including 7 figures and 5 table
The Bragg regime of the two-particle Kapitza-Dirac effect
We analyze the Bragg regime of the two-particle Kapitza-Dirac arrangement,
completing the basic theory of this effect. We provide a detailed evaluation of
the detection probabilities for multi-mode states, showing that a complete
description must include the interaction time in addition to the usual
dimensionless parameter w. The arrangement can be used as a massive
two-particle beam splitter. In this respect, we present a comparison with
Hong-Ou-Mandel-type experiments in quantum optics. The analysis reveals the
presence of dips for massive bosons and a differentiated behavior of
distinguishable and identical particles in an unexplored scenario. We suggest
that the arrangement can provide the basis for symmetrization verification

Damping of Oscillations in Layer-by-Layer Growth
We present a theory for the damping of layer-by-layer growth oscillations in
molecular beam epitaxy. The surface becomes rough on distances larger than a
layer coherence length which is substantially larger than the diffusion length.
The damping time can be calculated by a comparison of the competing roughening
and smoothening mechanisms. The dependence on the growth conditions,
temperature and deposition rate, is characterized by a power law. The
theoretical results are confirmed by computer simulations.Comment: 19 pages, RevTex, 5 Postscript figures, needs psfig.st
Extent of force indeterminacy in packings of frictional rigid disks
Static packings of frictional rigid particles are investigated by means of
discrete element simulations. We explore the ensemble of allowed force
realizations in the space of contact forces for a given packing structure. We
estimate the extent of force indeterminacy with different methods. The
indeterminacy exhibits a nonmonotonic dependence on the interparticle friction
coefficient. We verify directly that larger force-indeterminacy is accompanied
by a more robust behavior against local perturbations. We also investigate the
local indeterminacy of individual contact forces. The probability distribution
of local indeterminacy changes its shape depending on friction. We find that
local indeterminacy tends to be larger on force chains for intermediate
friction. This correlation disappears in the large friction limit.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figure
Pattern phase diagram for 2D arrays of coupled limit-cycle oscillators
Arrays of coupled limit-cycle oscillators represent a paradigmatic example
for studying synchronization and pattern formation. They are also of direct
relevance in the context of currently emerging experiments on nano- and
optomechanical oscillator arrays. We find that the full dynamical equations for
the phase dynamics of such an array go beyond previously studied Kuramoto-type
equations. We analyze the evolution of the phase field in a two-dimensional
array and obtain a "phase diagram" for the resulting stationary and
non-stationary patterns. The possible observation in optomechanical arrays is
discussed briefly
Twin-photon techniques for fiber measurements
The potential of twin photons generated by parametric down-conversion for
metrological applications are discussed. We present several experimental
results like the measurement of chromatic dispersion and polarization mode
dispersion in optical fibers.Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, Invited paper for the Symposium on Optical Fiber
