    Further studies on relic neutrino asymmetry generation II: a rigorous treatment of repopulation in the adiabatic limit

    We derive an approximate relic neutrino asymmetry evolution equation that systematically incorporates repopulation processes from the full quantum kinetic equations (QKEs). It is shown that in the collision dominant epoch, the said equation reduces precisely to the expression obtained previously from the static/adiabatic approximation. The present treatment thus provides a rigorous justification for the seemingly incongruous assumptions of a negligible repopulation function and instantaneous repopulation sometimes employed in earlier works.Comment: RevTeX, 11 pages, no figure

    The shape of equality: discourses around the Section 28 repeal in Scotland

    This article focuses on conceptualizations of equality in the discourses deployed in the campaign to repeal Section 28 in Scotland. I use the parliamentary debates and two newspapers: the Daily Record, which supported the campaign to Keep the Clause, and The Guardian, which supported repeal, to exemplify the different discursive articulations around equality and citizenship. I suggest that the Scottish example provides further evidence of the ways in which liberalism naturalizes heterosexuality as the standard for citizenship and thus bequeaths a hierarchy of 'equality' and citizenship in the realm of sexuality, wherein lesbian and gay citizenship is either rendered invalid or characterized as 'special rights'. However, within the narrow confines of the parliamentary debates, more expansive and differentiated notions of citizenship and equality are evident. Whilst I conclude that the 'shape' of equality achieved through the repeal has been moulded to support institutionalized heterosexuality - with Section 28 replaced by statutory guidelines on sex education which advocate marriage - I also suggest equality is contested, both through the recognition of transformations in heterosexual family forms and the appeal to non-discrimination as a democratic principle. It is possible, therefore, that current destabilizations of the heterosexual social order simultaneously destabilize the precepts of liberal democracy

    Biofortification of UK food crops with selenium

    Se is an essential element for animals. In man low dietary Se intakes are associated with health disorders including oxidative stress-related conditions, reduced fertility and immune functions and an increased risk of cancers. Although the reference nutrient intakes for adult females and males in the UK are 60 and 75 μg Se/d respectively, dietary Se intakes in the UK have declined from >60 μg Se/d in the 1970s to 35 μg Se/d in the 1990s, with a concomitant decline in human Se status. This decline in Se intake and status has been attributed primarily to the replacement of milling wheat having high levels of grain Se and grown on high-Se soils in North America with UK-sourced wheat having low levels of grain Se and grown on low-Se soils. An immediate solution to low dietary Se intake and status is to enrich UK-grown food crops using Se fertilisers (agronomic biofortification). Such a strategy has been adopted with success in Finland. It may also be possible to enrich food crops in the longer term by selecting or breeding crop varieties with enhanced Se-accumulation characteristics (genetic biofortification).     On the sign of the neutrino asymmetry induced by active-sterile neutrino oscillations in the early Universe

    We deal with the problem of the final sign of the neutrino asymmetry generated by active-sterile neutrino oscillations in the Early Universe solving the full momentum dependent quantum kinetic equations. We study the parameter region 102<δm2/eV210310^{-2} \stackrel{<}{\sim} |\delta m^2|/eV^2\le 10^3. For a large range of sin22θ0\sin^2 2\theta_0 values the sign of the neutrino asymmetry is fixed and does not oscillate. For values of mixing parameters in the region 106<sin22θ0<3×104(eV2/δm2)10^{-6}\stackrel{<}{\sim}\sin^{2}2\theta_{0}\stackrel{<}{\sim} 3\times 10^{-4} ({\rm eV}^{2}/|\delta m^{2}|), the neutrino asymmetry appears to undergo rapid oscillations during the period where the exponential growth occurs. Our numerical results indicate that the oscillations are able to change the neutrino asymmetry sign. The sensitivity of the solutions and in particular of the final sign of lepton number to small changes in the initial conditions depends whether the number of oscillations is high enough. It is however not possible to conclude whether this effect is induced by the presence of a numerical error or is an intrinsic feature. As the amplitude of the statistical fluctuations is much lower than the numerical error, our numerical analysis cannot demonstrate the possibility of a chaotical generation of lepton domains. In any case this possibility is confined to a special region in the space of mixing parameters and it cannot spoil the compatibility of the νμνs\nu_{\mu}\leftrightarrow\nu_{s} solution to the neutrino atmospheric data obtained assuming a small mixing of the νs\nu_{s} with an eVτ{\rm eV}-\tau neutrino.Comment: Typo's corrected, accepted for publication in Phys.Rev.

    A number of the major human infectious diseases (like malaria and dengue) and Desert Locusts that still plague the developing world are sensitive to inter-seasonal and inter-decadal changes in environment and climate. Monitoring variations in environmental conditions such as rainfall and vegetation helps decision-makers at Ministries of Agriculture and Ministries of Health to assess the risk levels of Desert Locust outbreaks or malaria epidemics. The International research institute for climate and society (IRI) has developed products based on remotely sensed data to monitor those changes and provide the information directly to the decision-makers. This paper presents recent developments which use remote sensing to monitor climate variability, environmental conditions and their impacts on the dynamics of infectious diseases (malaria) and Desert Locust outbreaks

    Detailed study of BBN implications of neutrino oscillation generated neutrino asymmetries in some four neutrino models

    We re-examine the evolution of neutrino asymmetries in several four neutrino models. The first case involves the direct creation of LνeL_{\nu_e} by νeνs\nu_e \leftrightarrow \nu_s oscillations. In the second case, we consider the mass hierarchy mντmνμ,mνe,mνsm_{\nu_\tau} \gg m_{\nu_\mu}, m_{\nu_e}, m_{\nu_s} where ντνs\nu_\tau \leftrightarrow \nu_s oscillations generate a large LντL_{\nu_\tau} and some of this asymmetry is converted into LνeL_{\nu_e} by ντνe\nu_{\tau} \leftrightarrow \nu_{e} oscillations. We estimate the implications for BBN for a range of cosmologically interesting δm2\delta m^2 values. The present paper improves on previous published work by taking into account the finite repopulation rate and the time dependence of the distortions to the neutrino momentum distributions.     CD161 expression defines new human γδ T cell subsets

    γδ T cells are a highly versatile immune lineage involved in host defense and homeostasis, but questions remain around their heterogeneity, precise function and role during health and disease. We used multi−parametric flow cytometry, dimensionality reduction, unsupervised clustering, and self-organizing maps (SOM) to identify novel γδ T cell naïve/memory subsets chiefly defined by CD161 expression levels, a surface membrane receptor that can be activating or suppressive. We used middle-to-old age individuals given immune blockade is commonly used in this population. Whilst most Vδ1+subset cells exhibited a terminal differentiation phenotype, Vδ1− subset cells showed an early memory phenotype. Dimensionality reduction revealed eight γδ T cell clusters chiefly diverging through CD161 expression with CD4 and CD8 expression limited to specific subpopulations. Comparison of matched healthy elderly individuals to bronchiectasis patients revealed elevated Vδ1+ terminally differentiated effector memory cells in patients potentially linking this population with chronic proinflammatory disease

    Radial Velocity Studies of Close Binary Stars. XI

    Radial-velocity measurements and sine-curve fits to the orbital radial velocity variations are presented for ten close binary systems: DU Boo, ET Boo, TX Cnc, V1073 Cyg, HL Dra, AK Her, VW LMi, V566 Oph, TV UMi and AG Vir. By this contribution, the DDO program has reached the point of 100 published radial velocity orbits. The radial velocities have been determined using an improved fitting technique which uses rotational profiles to approximate individual peaks in broadening functions. Three systems, ET Boo, VW LMi and TV UMi, were found to be quadruple while AG Vir appears to be a spectroscopic triple. ET Boo, a member of a close visual binary with Pvis=113P_{vis} = 113 years, was previously known to be a multiple system, but we show that the second component is actually a close, non-eclipsing binary. The new observations enabled us to determine the spectroscopic orbits of the companion, non-eclipsing pairs in ET Boo and VW LMi. The particularly interesting case is VW LMi, where the period of the mutual revolution of the two spectroscopic binaries is only 355 days. While most of the studied eclipsing pairs are contact binaries, ET Boo is composed of two double-lined detached binaries and HL Dra is single-lined detached or semi-detached system. Five systems of this group were observed spectroscopically before: TX Cnc, V1073 Cyg, AK Her (as a single-lined binary), V566 Oph, AG Vir, but our new data are of much higher quality than the previous studies.Comment: Accepted by AJ, August 2006, 10 figures, 3 table
