Early Labour Market Careers of Second-Generation Turks in Germany
Real-time macroeconomic data and ex ante predictability of stock returns
We report results on the ex ante predictability of monthly excess stock returns in Germany using real-time and revised macroeconomic data. Our real-time macroeconomic data cover the period 1994-2005. We report three results. 1) Real-time macroeconomic data did not contribute much to ex ante stock-return predictability. 2) The performance of an investor who had to rely on noisy real-time macroeconomic data would have been comparable to the performance of an investor who had access to revised macroeconomic data. 3) In real time, it is important for an investor to know which real-time variable to use for predicting stock returns. --Ex ante predictability of stock returns,real-time macroeconomic data, performance of investment strategies,Germany
Forecasting stock market volatility with macroeconomic variables in real time
We compared forecasts of stock market volatility based on real-time and revised macroeconomic data. To this end, we used a new dataset on monthly real-time macroeconomic variables for Germany. The dataset covers the period 1994-2005. We used a statistical, a utility-based, and an options-based criterion to evaluate volatility forecasts. Our main result is that the statistical and economic value of volatility forecasts based on real-time data is comparable to the value of forecasts based on revised macroeconomic data. --Forecasting stock market volatility,Real-time macroeconomic data,Evaluation of forecasting accuracy
Towards a solution of the closure problem for convective atmospheric boundary-layer turbulence
We consider the closure problem for turbulence in the dry convective atmospheric boundary
layer (CBL). Transport in the CBL is carried by small scale eddies near the surface and large
plumes in the well mixed middle part up to the inversion that separates the CBL from the
stably stratified air above. An analytically tractable model based on a multivariate Delta-PDF
approach is developed. It is an extension of the model of Gryanik and Hartmann [1] (GH02)
that additionally includes a term for background turbulence. Thus an exact solution is derived
and all higher order moments (HOMs) are explained by second order moments, correlation
coefficients and the skewness. The solution provides a proof of the extended universality
hypothesis of GH02 which is the refinement of the Millionshchikov hypothesis (quasi-
normality of FOM). This refined hypothesis states that CBL turbulence can be considered as
result of a linear interpolation between the Gaussian and the very skewed turbulence regimes.
Although the extended universality hypothesis was confirmed by results of field
measurements, LES and DNS simulations (see e.g. [2-4]), several questions remained
unexplained. These are now answered by the new model including the reasons of the
universality of the functional form of the HOMs, the significant scatter of the values of the
coefficients and the source of the magic of the linear interpolation. Finally, the closures
61
predicted by the model are tested against measurements and LES data. Some of the other
issues of CBL turbulence, e.g. familiar kurtosis-skewness relationships and relation of area
coverage parameters of plumes (so called filling factors) with HOM will be discussed also
On a Solution of the Closure Problem for Dry Convective Boundary Layer Turbulence and Beyond
We consider the closure problem of representing the higher-order moments (HOMs) in terms of lower-
order moments, a central feature in turbulence modeling based on the Reynolds-averaged NavierâStokes (RANS)
approach. Our focus is on models suited for the description of asymmetric, nonlocal, and semiorganized turbulence in the
dry atmospheric convective boundary layer (CBL). We establish a multivariate probability density function (PDF) describ-
ing populations of plumes that are embedded in a sea of weaker randomly spaced eddies, and apply an assumed delta-PDF
approximation. The main content of this approach consists of capturing the bulk properties of the PDF. We solve the clo-
sure problem analytically for all relevant HOMs involving velocity components and temperature and establish a hierarchy
of new non-Gaussian turbulence closure models of different content and complexity ranging from analytical to semianalyti-
cal. All HOMs in the hierarchy have a universal and simple functional form. They refine the widely used Millionshchikov
closure hypothesis and generalize the famous quadratic skewnessâkurtosis relationship to higher order. We examine the
performance of the new closures by comparison with measurement, LES, and DNS data and derive empirical constants for
semianalytical models, which are best for practical applications. We show that the new models have a good skill in predict-
ing the HOMs for atmospheric CBL. Our closures can be implemented in second-, third-, and fourth-order RANS turbu-
lence closure models of bi-, tri-, and four-variate levels of complexity. Finally, several possible generalizations of our
approach are discussed
Fortschritt als Fraktur im frĂŒhen Science Fiction Film. Metaphorologische Ăberlegungen zu Auf- und EinbrĂŒchen in LE VOYAGE DANS LA LUNE und LE VOYAGE Ă TRAVERS L`IMPOSSIBLE von G. MĂ©liĂšs
Fantasies of man travelling into space form a main part of the popular movie genre âScience Fictionâ. These celluloid visions are not only fantasies of improving transport, they also convey a meaning in a figurative sense. They can be seen as a modern adoption of one of humanities oldest metaphors, âlife as a sea fare voyageâ: the meaning, which was once expressed by this ânautical metaphorâ, has been transferred and can nowadays be found in films, which show astro-nauts crossing the frontier from known space into the unknown space. In order to conclude on their attitude towards technological progress in the early 20th century, the two oldest space travel movies, Le Voyage dans la Lune (F 1902) and Le Voyage a Travers LâImpossible (F 1904) will be analyzed

Ultrametric probe of the spin-glass state in a field
We study the ultrametric structure of phase space of one-dimensional Ising
spin glasses with random power-law interaction in an external random field.
Although in zero field the model in both the mean-field and non-mean-field
universality classes shows an ultrametric signature [Phys. Rev. Lett. 102,
037207 (2009)], when a field is applied ultrametricity seems only present in
the mean-field regime. The results for the non-mean field case in an external
field agree with data for spin glasses studied within the Migdal-Kadanoff
approximation. Our results therefore suggest that the spin-glass state might be
fragile to external fields below the upper critical dimension.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, 1 tabl
