    Positioning the Destination Product-Can Regional Tourist Boards Learn from Private Sector Practice?

    This article examines the role of positioning in the marketing of a tourism destination. The study focuses on the current positioning strategies pursued by the Regional Tourist Boards (RTBs) in England. A recent nationwide consumer research study into short holiday destination choice in the UK revealed that consumers were confused by the regional product message. The evidence suggests that current RTB positioning strategies are failing to keep pace with the constantly evolving needs of the consumer. This article explores the reasons for clearly positioning the destination product and suggests that, although RTBs could learn from marketing strategies employed in other sectors of the tourism industry, there are likely to be organisational and cultural barriers inhibiting this learning curve

    A randomised trial evaluating Bevacizumab as adjuvant therapy following resection of AJCC stage IIB, IIC and III cutaneous melanoma : an update

    At present, there are no standard therapies for the adjuvant treatment of malignant melanoma. Patients with primary tumours with a high-Breslow thickness (stages IIB and IIC) or with resected loco-regional nodal disease (stage III) are at high risk of developing metastasis and subsequent disease-related death. Given this, it is important that novel therapies are investigated in the adjuvant melanoma setting. Since angiogenesis is essential for primary tumour growth and the development of metastasis, anti-angiogenic agents are attractive potential therapeutic candidates for clinical trials in the adjuvant setting. Therefore, we initiated a phase II trial in resected high-risk cutaneous melanoma, assessing the efficacy of bevacizumab versus observation. In the interim safety data analysis, we demonstrate that bevacizumab is a safe therapy in the adjuvant melanoma setting with no apparent increase in the surgical complication rate after either primary tumour resection and/or loco-regional lymphadenectomy

    Motion-base simulator study of control of an externally blown flap STOL transport aircraft after failure of an outboard engine during landing approach

    A moving-base simulator investigation of the problems of recovery and landing of a STOL aircraft after failure of an outboard engine during final approach was made. The approaches were made at 75 knots along a 6 deg glide slope. The engine was failed at low altitude and the option to go around was not allowed. The aircraft was simulated with each of three control systems, and it had four high-bypass-ratio fan-jet engines exhausting against large triple-slotted wing flaps to produce additional lift. A virtual-image out-the-window television display of a simulated STOL airport was operating during part of the investigation. Also, a simple heads-up flight director display superimposed on the airport landing scene was used by the pilots to make some of the recoveries following an engine failure. The results of the study indicated that the variation in visual cues and/or motion cues had little effect on the outcome of a recovery, but they did have some effect on the pilot's response and control patterns

    Full capacitance matrix of coupled quantum dot arrays: static and dynamical effects

    We numerically calculated the full capacitance matrices for both one-dimensional (1D) and two-dimensional (2D) quantum-dot arrays. We found it is necessary to use the full capacitance matrix in modeling coupled quantum dot arrays due to weaker screening in these systems in comparison with arrays of normal metal tunnel junctions. The static soliton potential distributions in both 1D and 2D arrays are well approximated by the unscreened (1/r) coulomb potential, instead of the exponential fall-off expected from the often used nearest neighbor approximation. The Coulomb potential approximation also provides a simple expression for the full inverse capacitance matrix of uniform quantum dot arrays. In terms of dynamics, we compare the current-voltage (I-V) characteristics of voltage biased 1D arrays using either the full capacitance matrix or its nearest neighbor approximation. The I-V curves show clear differences and the differences become more pronounced when larger arrays are considered.Comment: 8 pages preprint format, 3 PostScript figure

    THE VELOCITY DEPENDENCE OF TECHNNIQUES COMMONLY LINKED WITH LOWER BACK INJURY IN CRICKET FAST BOWLING

    The aim of this study was to examine the velocity dependence of shoulder alignment counter rotation, maximum hip-shoulder separation angle, maximum front knee flexion angle and maximum trunk lateral flexion. High-performance fast bowlers (n=17) were required to bowl multiple deliveries in a fast, normal and slower ball category. No statistical association was found between bowling velocity and maximum shoulder counter rotation or knee flexion. Significant associations were found between ball release velocity and trunk lateral flexion and maximum hip-shoulder separation angle. Significant differences were found between the bowling categories for separation angle and knee flexion. A regression analysis showed that trunk lateral flexion and separation angle only accounted for 11% of the ball velocity variance, for the normal delivery (31.3 ms-1)

    First excitations in two- and three-dimensional random-field Ising systems

    We present results on the first excited states for the random-field Ising model. These are based on an exact algorithm, with which we study the excitation energies and the excitation sizes for two- and three-dimensional random-field Ising systems with a Gaussian distribution of the random fields. Our algorithm is based on an approach of Frontera and Vives which, in some cases, does not yield the true first excited states. Using the corrected algorithm, we find that the order-disorder phase transition for three dimensions is visible via crossings of the excitations-energy curves for different system sizes, while in two-dimensions these crossings converge to zero disorder. Furthermore, we obtain in three dimensions a fractal dimension of the excitations cluster of d_s=2.42(2). We also provide analytical droplet arguments to understand the behavior of the excitation energies for small and large disorder as well as close to the critical point.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figure
