Science lives: School choices and ānatural tendenciesā
An analysis of 12 semi-structured interviews with university-based scientists and non-scientists illustrates their life journeys towards, or away from, science and the strengths and impact of life occurrences leading them to choose science or non-science professions. We have adopted narrative approaches and used Mezirow's transformative learning theory framework. The areas of discussion from the result have stressed on three main categories that include āsmooth transitionā, āincremental wavering transition' and ātransformative transitionā. The article concludes by discussing the key influences that shaped initial attitudes and direction in these people through natural inclination, environmental inspirations and perceptions of science

Assessing simulations of daily temperature and precipitation variability with global climate models for present and enhanced greenhouse climates
The enhanced greenhouse climates of five different global climate models are examined with reference to the ability
of the models to characterize the frequency of extreme events on both a regional and global scale. Ten years of model output for both control and enhanced greenhouse conditions are utilized to derive return periods for extreme
temperature and precipitation events and to characterize the variability of the model climate at both regional and
global scales. Under enhanced greenhouse conditions, return periods for extreme precipitation events are shorter and
there is a general increase in the intensity of precipitation and number of wet spells in most areas. There is a decrease in frequency of cold temperature extremes and an increase in hot extremes in many areas. The results show a reasonable level of agreement between the models in terms of global scale variability, but the difference between
model simulations of precipitation on a regional scale suggests that model derived estimates of variability changes
must be carefully justified
Turkdean Roman Villa, Gloucestershire: archaeological investigations 1997-1998
Before the transmission of the first āliveā Time Team television programme on 23 August 1997, the existence of a Roman villa near Chalkhill Barn in the parish of Turkdean, 12 miles north-east of Cirencester and 2 miles from the Fosse Way, was hardly known to the archaeological community (FIG. 1). That a Roman building did exist in this location had, however, been suspected for a number of years by the landowner, the late Mr Wilf Mustoe. Distinctive linear parchmarks suggestive of buildings had been clearly visible at ground level in the grass pasture each dry summer, and in 1976 Mr Mustoe made a measured sketch plan of them on the back of an envelope. Subsequently the sketch was drawn up into a scale plan entitled āRoman villaā by Simon Goddard, a relation. There was little knowledge of the site outside of Mr Mustoe's family until it was independently ādiscoveredā by local archaeologist Roger Box in August 1996 whilst fortuitously flying over the site in a helicopter. In the evening light Mr Box instantly recognised the parchmarks of an unmistakable Roman villa and took a series of photographs (FIG. 2). Mr Box showed his photographs to Mr Mustoe, and with his agreement wrote to Time Team suggesting that this would be an excellent site for a television programme. Impacts of elevated atmospheric COā on nutrient content of important food crops.
One of the many ways that climate change may affect human health is by altering the nutrient content of food crops. However, previous attempts to study the effects of increased atmospheric CO2 on crop nutrition have been limited by small sample sizes and/or artificial growing conditions. Here we present data from a meta-analysis of the nutritional contents of the edible portions of 41 cultivars of six major crop species grown using free-air CO2 enrichment (FACE) technology to expose crops to ambient and elevated CO2 concentrations in otherwise normal field cultivation conditions. This data, collected across three continents, represents over ten times more data on the nutrient content of crops grown in FACE experiments than was previously available. We expect it to be deeply useful to future studies, such as efforts to understand the impacts of elevated atmospheric CO2 on crop macro- and micronutrient concentrations, or attempts to alleviate harmful effects of these changes for the billions of people who depend on these crops for essential nutrients
The effects of changes in the order of verbal labels and numerical values on children's scores on attitude and rating scales
Research with adults has shown that variations in verbal labels and numerical scale values on rating scales can affect the responses given. However, few studies have been conducted with children. The study aimed to examine potential differences in childrenās responses to Likert-type rating scales according to their anchor points and scale direction, and to see whether or not such differences were stable over time. 130 British children, aged 9 to 11, completed six sets of Likert-type rating scales, presented in four different ways varying the position of positive labels and numerical values. The results showed, both initially and 8-12 weeks later, that presenting a positive label or a high score on the left of a scale led to significantly higher mean scores than did the other variations. These findings indicate that different arrangements of rating scales can produce different results which has clear implications for the administration of scales with children
The Highly Damped Quasinormal Modes of -dimensional Reissner-Nordstrom Black Holes in the Small Charge Limit
We analyze in detail the highly damped quasinormal modes of -dimensional
Reissner-Nordstrm black holes with small charge, paying
particular attention to the large but finite damping limit in which the
Schwarzschild results should be valid. In the infinite damping limit, we
confirm using different methods the results obtained previously in the
literature for higher dimensional Reissner-Nordstrm black holes.
Using a combination of analytic and numerical techniques we also calculate the
transition of the real part of the quasinormal mode frequency from the
Reissner-Nordstrm value for very large damping to the
Schwarzschild value of for intermediate damping. The real
frequency does not interpolate smoothly between the two values. Instead there
is a critical value of the damping at which the topology of the
Stokes/anti-Stokes lines change, and the real part of the quasinormal mode
frequency dips to zero.Comment: 18 pages, 8 figure
Defining forgiveness: Christian clergy and general population perspectives.
The lack of any consensual definition of forgiveness is a serious weakness in the research literature (McCullough, Pargament & Thoresen, 2000). As forgiveness is at the core of Christianity, this study returns to the Christian source of the concept to explore the meaning of forgiveness for practicing Christian clergy. Comparisons are made with a general population sample and social science definitions of forgiveness to ensure that a shared meaning of forgiveness is articulated. Anglican and Roman Catholic clergy (N = 209) and a general population sample (N = 159) completed a postal questionnaire about forgiveness. There is agreement on the existence of individual differences in forgiveness. Clergy and the general population perceive reconciliation as necessary for forgiveness while there is no consensus within psychology. The clergy suggests that forgiveness is limitless and that repentance is unnecessary while the general population suggests that there are limits and that repentance is necessary. Psychological definitions do not conceptualize repentance as necessary for forgiveness and the question of limits has not been addressed although within therapy the implicit assumption is that forgiveness is limitless.</p
