Corporate venture capital, strategic alliances, and the governance of newly public firms
We examine the effect of investments by corporate venture capitalists (CVCs) on the governance structures of venture backed IPOs. One of the main differences between CVCs and traditional venture capitalists (TVCs) is that the former often invest for strategic reasons and enter into various types of strategic alliances with their portfolio firms that last well beyond the IPO. We argue that the presence of such strategic alliances will have a significant impact on the governance structure of CVC backed firms when they go public and in the following years. Using a sample of venture backed IPOs, we evaluate several hypotheses concerning the role of CVCs in the corporate governance of newly public firms. We find that strategic CVC backed IPOs have weaker CEOs and more outsiders on the board and on the compensation committee than a carefully selected sample of matching firms. In addition, the probability of forced CEOs turnover is higher for strategic CVC backed IPOs, while at the same time these firms use staggered boards more frequently. In contrast, the governance structures of purely financial CVC backed IPO firms and their matching firms do not exhibit any significant differences.

Molecular Cloning of a Bovine Immunoglobulin Lambda Chain cDNA
A cDNA library of the bovine mammary gland constructed in pBR322 was screened by mRNA hybrid-selected translation and by differential hybridization. Several immunoglobulin (Ig) λ light-chain clones were identified and sequenced. Nucleotide sequence comparison of bovine and human Ig λ chains showed a high degree of homology for constant regions and for J regions. The amino acid (aa) sequence encoded by the constant region of the bovine Ig λ chain cDNA contains 107 aa with differences at 24 aa positions from the human Ig A chain. Three complementarity-determining regions (CDR1,2,3) characteristic of the variable region of bovine Ig λ chain cDNA can be distinguished. The bovine and human sequences display good homology in the framework region 3 (FR3) but only patches of homology throughout the FR2 region. The 5′ end of the bovine Ig λ chain cDNA fragment of clone 1-14E contains five stop codons: two in CDR1, one in FR1 and two in the hydrophobic prepeptide region. These data suggest that the Igλ mRNA of clone 1-14E is transcribed from the Vλ pseudogene

STRA13 Interacts with STAT3 and Modulates Transcription of STAT3-dependent Targets
STRA13 is a pVHL-dependent bHLH transcription factor up-regulated on the mRNA level in multiple cancer cell lines and implicated recently in the regulation of immune cell homeostasis and autoimmunity. In searching for STRA13-interacting proteins with oncogenic potential by the yeast two-hybrid screening, we identified STAT3β as a STRA13-binding partner. We showed that STRA13 binds predominantly to phosphorylated (active) STAT3 α and β isoforms via its HLH and C-terminal regions. We also found that STRA13 was able to activate transcription from STAT-dependent cis-elements. Expression of endogenous STRA13 was shown to be cytokine-inducible, consistent with STRA13 involvement in STAT-dependent transcription regulation. We demonstrated that the STAT3-regulated promoter of the pro-apoptotic Fas gene was activated upon STRA13 over-expression and that co-expression of STRA13 with STAT3β or STAT3α modulated the transcriptional outcome. Forced expression of STRA13 induced apoptosis, in agreement with the STRA13 activation effect on the Fas promoter. Simultaneous expression of STRA13 and STAT3β resulted in alleviation of the STRA13 pro-apoptotic effect. Thus, for the first time, we identify STRA13 as a STAT3 partner and provide a consistent line of evidence for STRA13 involvement into regulation of apoptosis via the STAT pathways

Embryonal Antigens in Maize Caryopses: The Temporal Order of Antigen Accumulation during Embryogenesis
The sequential appearance of a specific group of embryonal antigens (EA), presumably globulins, was demonstrated in developing maize (Zea mays L.) caryopses using a double immunodiffusion test with absorption of common antigens. Cross immunoelectrophoresis was employed to follow the differential pattern of EA accumulation in the growing scutellum and embryonic axis. The transient nature of two predominant EA seems to indicate their role as specific protein reserves of embryonal tissues. Another presumably organ-specific EA was maintained in callus obtained from a 28-day-old culture of scutellum isolated from the mature non-germinated caryopsis

Immunohistochemical Studies of S-100 Protein During Postnatal Ontogenesis of the Brain of Two Strains of Rats
We have studied the dynamics of the appearance of cells reacting positively with anti-S-100 protein antiserum, during postnatal neurocytogenesis in the brain of rats of two strains differing in their susceptibility to sound stimuli. The postnatal time of appearance of cells reacting positively with anti-S-100 protein antiserum was somewhat later in rats susceptible to sound-induced seizures than in sound-resistant rats. These differences concerned mainly the cerebral cortex of 12-day-old rats. By day 21 of postnatal life these differences had disappeared. In subcortical structures of the brain, S-100 protein was first found on the 4th to the 5th day of life and the rate of appearance of cells containing this protein was similar in the two strains
Synthesis of inorganic dyes based on plasmonic silver nanoparticles for the visible and infrared regions of the spectrum
The effect of various technological factors during the multistage synthesis of plasmonic silver particles in aqueous solutions on nanoparticle size, morphology, and color is studied. The synthesized suspensions are found to contain tabular silver nanoparticles of hexagonal and triangular shape. The foundations of the technology for synthesizing stable silver colloids with a high silver concentration for the visible and nearinfrared regions of the spectrum are developed
Inverse Scattering Transform for the Camassa-Holm equation
An Inverse Scattering Method is developed for the Camassa-Holm equation. As
an illustration of our approach the solutions corresponding to the
reflectionless potentials are explicitly constructed in terms of the scattering
data. The main difference with respect to the standard Inverse Scattering
Transform lies in the fact that we have a weighted spectral problem. We

Robust cryogenic matched low-pass coaxial filters for quantum computing applications
Electromagnetic noise is one of the key external factors decreasing
superconducting qubits coherence. Matched coaxial filters can prevent microwave
and IR photons negative influence on superconducting quantum circuits. Here, we
report on design and fabrication route of matched low-pass coaxial filters for
noise-sensitive measurements at milliKelvin temperatures. A robust transmission
coefficient with designed linear absorption (-1dB/GHz) and ultralow reflection
losses less than -20 dB up to 20 GHz is achieved. We present a mathematical
model for evaluating and predicting filters transmission parameters depending
on their dimensions. It is experimentally approved on two filters prototypes
different lengths with compound of Cu powder and Stycast commercial resin
demonstrating excellent matching. The presented design and assembly route are
universal for various compounds and provide high repeatability of geometrical
and microwave characteristics. Finally, we demonstrate three filters with
almost equal reflection and transmission characteristics in the range from 0 to
20 GHz, which is quite useful to control multiple channel superconducting
