Factors of unpredictable shots concerning new soccer balls

    Get PDF
AbstractThe configuration of new soccer balls has closely approached a perfect round shape by not only reducing the number of panels but also by eliminating roughness of the panel joints by utilizing thermal bonding process recently. Therefore, in a non-rotating or low-rotating moving shot, a soccer ball drops and curves, i.e. motion by the change of wake flow, which is called a knuckle ball effect. Factors of the knuckle ball effect on the new soccer balls were investigated in case of a non-rotating shot and a low-rotating one. A correlation between fluctuation of the wake and fluid forces was identified in a symmetric panel configuration of the ball. The asymmetric configuration of the ball panel was also investigated as a factor to bring unpredictable change of the ball flight path. The low-rotating ball changes its frontal area against the moving direction and it produces irregular lateral forces. Consequently, the factors which produced the knuckle ball effect were found to be different from the case of non-rotating shots and low rotating shots

A Delivery Method for Compound Video Playback in Wireless Network

ISPA2006 : International Symposium on Parallel and Distributed Processing and Applications , Dec 4-7, 2006 , Sorrento, ItalyIn this paper, we propose a method to realize compound video (multiple videos on a layout)delivery service for mobile terminals. In the proposed method, we introduce proxies which receive multiple videos from corresponding servers and produce a composite video from the received videos in real-time according to the layouts which users specify. However, if users require sets of videos with slightly different layouts, multiple similar composite videos will be generated and the wireless bandwidth will be suppressed to transfer them. So, the proposed method identifies the common part in layouts of user requirements, and transmits to each user a composite video corresponding to the common part and remaining videos. We have developed a greedy algorithm which calculates the set of videos to be transmitted within the available bandwidth, so that the sum of satisfaction degrees of all users is maximized. Through experiments, we confirmed that our method can achieve much higher user satisfaction degrees compared to the case that each user terminal receives multiple videos separately and plays them back in parallel

Circadian-regulated expression of a nuclear-encoded plastid σ factor gene (sigA) in wheat seedlings

AbstractThe activity of a light-responsive psbD promoter in plastids is known to be regulated by a circadian clock. However, the mechanism of the circadian regulation of the psbD light-responsive promotor, which is recognized by an Escherichia coli-type RNA polymerase, is not yet known. We examined the time course of mRNA accumulation of two E. coli-type RNA polymerase subunit genes, sigA and rpoA, under a continuous light condition after 12 h light/12 h dark entrainment. Accumulation of the sigA mRNA was found to be regulated by a circadian clock, while rpoA mRNA did not show any significant oscillation throughout the experiment

Background:The aim of this study was to investigate the efficacy and safety of gemcitabine and S-1 combination chemotherapy in patients with advanced biliary tract cancer. Patients and Methods: A retrospective study was performed on 15 consecutive patients. Gemcitabine was administered intravenously at 1,000 mg/m2 on days 8 and 15. Oral S-1 (60 mg/m2 in 2 divided doses) was given daily for the first 2 weeks, followed by 1 week of rest. This 3-week course of treatment was repeated. The primary endpoint was response rate, and the secondary endpoints were overall survival, progression-free survival, and safety. Results: The overall response rate was 26.7%, and the disease control rate was 73.4%. The overall survival was 12.0 months (95% CI, 9.5–14.5 months), and the progression-free survival was 8.0 months (95% CI, 4.3–11.7 months). Adverse events of grade 3 or 4 occurred in 33.3%, and the major grade 3/4 toxicities were anemia (20.0%), leukopenia (13.3%), and anorexia (13.3%). Conclusion:Gemcitabine and S-1 combination chemotherapy is effective and safe in patients with advanced biliary tract cancer

Advanced Laser Diagnostics for Electron Density Measurements

This paper describes innovative laser diagnostics under development at the National Institute for Fusion Science, aiming for the establishment of reliable density measurement techniques in the next step magneticallyconfined fusion devices. There are two approaches, interferometry and polarimetry. A new type of two color laser (47.6/57.2-μm CH3OD) interferometer has been developed and its original function, vibration subtraction, was confirmed in a test stand. The line integrated density measurement at Compact Helical System by using the polarimeter based on Cotton-Mouton effect was demonstrated by the use of a 337-μm HCN laser source
