A Numerical Study of Gluon Scattering Amplitudes in N=4 Super Yang-Mills Theory at Strong Coupling
We study gluon scattering amplitudes in N=4 super Yang-Mills theory at strong
coupling via the AdS/CFT correspondence. We solve numerically the discretized
Euler-Lagrange equations on the square worldsheet for the minimal surface with
light-like boundaries in AdS spacetime. We evaluate the area of the surface for
the 4, 6 and 8-point amplitudes using worldsheet and radial cut-off
regularizations. Their infrared singularities in the cut-off regularization are
found to agree with the analytical results near the cusp less than 5% at

SSL for Auditory ERP-Based BCI
A brain–computer interface (BCI) is a communication tool that analyzes neural activity and relays the translated commands to carry out actions. In recent years, semi-supervised learning (SSL) has attracted attention for visual event-related potential (ERP)-based BCIs and motor-imagery BCIs as an effective technique that can adapt to the variations in patterns among subjects and trials. The applications of the SSL techniques are expected to improve the performance of auditory ERP-based BCIs as well. However, there is no conclusive evidence supporting the positive effect of SSL techniques on auditory ERP-based BCIs. If the positive effect could be verified, it will be helpful for the BCI community. In this study, we assessed the effects of SSL techniques on two public auditory BCI datasets—AMUSE and PASS2D—using the following machine learning algorithms: step-wise linear discriminant analysis, shrinkage linear discriminant analysis, spatial temporal discriminant analysis, and least-squares support vector machine. These backbone classifiers were firstly trained by labeled data and incrementally updated by unlabeled data in every trial of testing data based on SSL approach. Although a few data of the datasets were negatively affected, most data were apparently improved by SSL in all cases. The overall accuracy was logarithmically increased with every additional unlabeled data. This study supports the positive effect of SSL techniques and encourages future researchers to apply them to auditory ERP-based BCIs
Class I/II hybrid inhibitory oligodeoxynucleotide exerts Th1 and Th2 double immunosuppression
We designed class I/II hybrid inhibitory oligodeoxynucleotides (iODNs), called iSG, and found that the sequence 5′-TTAGGG-3′, which has a six-base loop head structure, and a 3′-oligo (dG)3–5 tail sequence are important for potent immunosuppressive activity. Interestingly, splenocytes isolated from ovalbumin (OVA)-immunized mice and treated with iSG3 showed suppression of not only interleukin (IL)-6, IL-12p35, IL-12p40, and interferon (IFN) γ mRNA expression, but also IL-4 and IL-13 mRNA expression. Thus, both Th2 and Th1 immune responses can be strongly suppressed by iODNs in splenocytes from allergen-immunized mice, suggesting usefulness in the treatment of diseases induced by over-active immune activation.ArticleFEBS Open Bio. 3:41-45 (2013)journal articl

Directed Differentiation of Patient-Specific Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells Identifies the Transcriptional Repression and Epigenetic Modification of NKX2-5, HAND1, and NOTCH1 in Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome
The genetic basis of hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) remains unknown, and the lack of animal models to reconstitute the cardiac maldevelopment has hampered the study of this disease. This study investigated the altered control of transcriptional and epigenetic programs that may affect the development of HLHS by using disease-specific induced pluripotent stem (iPS) cells. Cardiac progenitor cells (CPCs) were isolated from patients with congenital heart diseases to generate patient-specific iPS cells. Comparative gene expression analysis of HLHS- and biventricle (BV) heart-derived iPS cells was performed to dissect the complex genetic circuits that may promote the disease phenotype. Both HLHS- and BV heart-derived CPCs were reprogrammed to generate disease-specific iPS cells, which showed characteristic human embryonic stem cell signatures, expressed pluripotency markers, and could give rise to cardiomyocytes. However, HLHS-iPS cells exhibited lower cardiomyogenic differentiation potential than BV-iPS cells. Quantitative gene expression analysis demonstrated that HLHS-derived iPS cells showed transcriptional repression of NKX2-5, reduced levels of TBX2 and NOTCH/HEY signaling, and inhibited HAND1/2 transcripts compared with control cells. Although both HLHS-derived CPCs and iPS cells showed reduced SRE and TNNT2 transcriptional activation compared with BV-derived cells, co-transfection of NKX2-5, HAND1, and NOTCH1 into HLHS-derived cells resulted in synergistic restoration of these promoters activation. Notably, gain- and loss-of-function studies revealed that NKX2-5 had a predominant impact on NPPA transcriptional activation. Moreover, differentiated HLHS-derived iPS cells showed reduced H3K4 dimethylation as well as histone H3 acetylation but increased H3K27 trimethylation to inhibit transcriptional activation on the NKX2-5 promoter. These findings suggest that patient-specific iPS cells may provide molecular insights into complex transcriptional and epigenetic mechanisms, at least in part, through combinatorial expression of NKX2-5, HAND1, and NOTCH1 that coordinately contribute to cardiac malformations in HLHS
Risk factors for pancreatic stone formation in autoimmune pancreatitis over a long-term course
Autoimmune pancreatitis (AIP) has the potential to progress to a chronic state that forms pancreatic stones. The aim of this study was to clarify the risk factors underlying pancreatic stone formation in AIP. Sixty-nine patients with AIP who had been followed for at least 3 years were enrolled for evaluation of clinical and laboratory factors as well as computed tomography and endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography findings. During the course of this study, increased or de novo stone formation was seen in 28 patients, who were defined as the stone-forming group. No stones were observed in 32 patients, who were defined as the non-stone-forming group. Nine patients who had stones at diagnosis but showed no change during the course of this study were excluded from our cohort. Univariate analysis revealed no significant differences in clinical or laboratory factors associated with AIP-specific inflammation between the two groups. However, pancreatic head swelling (P = 0.006) and narrowing of both Wirsung's and Santorini's ducts in the pancreatic head region (P = 0.010) were significantly more frequent in the stone-forming group. Furthermore, multivariate analysis identified Wirsung and Santorini duct narrowing at diagnosis as a significant independent risk factor for pancreatic stone formation (OR 4.4, P = 0.019). Comments on gluon 6-point scattering amplitudes in N=4 SYM at strong coupling
We use the AdS/CFT prescription of Alday and Maldacena \cite{am} to analyze
gluon 6-point scattering amplitudes at strong coupling in SYM. By
cutting and gluing we obtain AdS 6-point amplitudes that contain extra boundary
conditions and come close to matching the field theory results. We interpret
them as parts of the field theory amplitudes, containing only certain diagrams.
We also analyze the collinear limits of 6- and 5-point amplitudes and discuss

GALAXY CRUISE: Deep Insights into Interacting Galaxies in the Local Universe
We present the first results from GALAXY CRUISE, a community (or citizen)
science project based on data from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic
Program (HSC-SSP). The current paradigm of galaxy evolution suggests that
galaxies grow hierarchically via mergers, but our observational understanding
of the role of mergers is still limited. The data from HSC-SSP are ideally
suited to improve our understanding with improved identifications of
interacting galaxies thanks to the superb depth and image quality of HSC-SSP.
We have launched a community science project, GALAXY CRUISE, in 2019 and
collected over 2 million independent classifications of 20,686 galaxies at z <
0.2. We first characterize the accuracy of the participants' classifications
and demonstrate that it surpasses previous studies based on shallower imaging
data. We then investigate various aspects of interacting galaxies in detail. We
show that there is a clear sign of enhanced activities of super massive black
holes and star formation in interacting galaxies compared to those in isolated
galaxies. The enhancement seems particularly strong for galaxies undergoing
violent merger. We also show that the mass growth rate inferred from our
results is roughly consistent with the observed evolution of the stellar mass
function. The 2nd season of GALAXY CRUISE is currently under way and we
conclude with future prospects. We make the morphological classification
catalog used in this paper publicly available at the GALAXY CRUISE website,
