Cost Comparison of Drainage Channel Construction Considering Uncertainty of Rainfall Distribution

    Get PDF
Rainfall data is the main parameter to design drainage channel. The accuracy of rainfall data determines the accuracy of peak discharge estimation that is used for designing the drainage channel for flood mitigation purpose. The previous study presented that uncertainty of peak discharge is associated with the uncertainty of rainfall distribution and uncertainty of water holding capacity. The main purpose of this study is for understanding the sensitivity of rainfall data by comparing the estimated cost to construct drainage channel based on different values of peak discharges using two different rainfall data set which one rainfall data is created by considering 10% uncertainty of rainfall distribution. This study area is located on Plampang, Sumbawa Besar, West Nusa Tenggara. Results showed that the total cost to construct drainage channel increased by 15% if considering 10% uncertainty of rainfall

    Get PDF
The study aimed to identify how an English native speaker and a highly proficient non-native speaker rated the comprehensibility of English sentences written by learners who were studying non-language majors. Nine essays written by students of Pharmacy and 14 essays written by students of Accounting were rated by the two raters. They were guided by a scoring rubric which emphasized mainly on the grammaticality and comprehensibility. Their ratings classified the sentences into two major categories: sentences with mistakes that potentially hinder comprehensibility, and sentences with mistakes that completely make them incomprehensible.Mistakes that make sentences partially comprehensible include wrong word order, coma splice, wrong auxiliary, wrong form of finite verb, wrong form of active sentences, the omission of verb be, intensifier, and introductory “there”. Mistakes that completely blocks comprehensibility are fragmented phrase, wrong collocations, mismatched markers, wrong part of speech, unfinished sentences, and excessively long sentences joined by a coordinator.A number of suggestions for the teaching of grammar, writing, and vocabulary are then proposed on the basis of the findings

The overflowing discharge of Bogowonto River in Purworejo Regency, Central Java flooded the surrounding area during the rainy season. A huge amount of losses such as damage of infrastructures, housing, and agricultural area occurs every year. This research mainly aims to develop flood hazard map and study the characteristics of flood in the study area. There are two main analysis; hydrologic and hydraulic, to model a flood event. Hydrologic and hydraulic modelling of flood based on 20 and 50- years return period hydrograph along the river geometryis done using the latest HEC program namely HEC- HMS 4.1 and HECRAS 5.0. Also, ArcGIS 10.3 is used as a terrain pre-processor and post-processor for hazard mapping. The results of this research are flood hazard maps for 20 and 50 years flood and its comparison to the recent major flood events. Flood inundation modelled covered an area of 993.77 Ha and 1,175.86 Ha, with maximum discharge calculated at Boro Weir as starting point are 1206.2 m3/s and 1,397.3 m3/s for 20 and 50 years flood case, respectively

Tondano River, along with its tributary Tikala River, is very potential to cause flood in Manado City. There were three big floods occurred in 1996, 2000 and 2005. In order to mitigate the damage risk due to flood, the controlling effort that can be applied soon in the field is required through short term flood control plan using structural measures. The feasible alternative plans should be evaluated to define the best plan based both on the hydraulics point of view and their effects on the river uses. The study is carried out through the 5 year return period flood routing using the version 3.1 HEC-RAS software. The selected design flood hydrograph is obtained using Nakayasu Synthetic Unit Hydrograph method by elaborating design rainfall derived from partially series rainfall data frequency analysis of Tondano and Tikala watersheds. Flow simulation is conducted in steps by modeling the hydrograph from Tikala River as the lateral inflow. The first simulation is carried out using bank full capacity discharge to define the flood characteristic and the critical sections. The second simulation is carried out for the design flood hydrograph using unsteady flow calculation on each plan to study the hydraulics feasibility. The study conducted herein is elaborated on water surface profile and velocity due to the plans affectivity to carry-off the flood discharge safely as well as the effect on river uses.  Based on the existing condition simulation, result shows two reach critical sections of the right bank and one reach critical section of the left bank Tondano River. The results of flood control simulation indicate that there are no significant differences on velocity among plans, but there are disparities on the capacity to carry off flood discharge safely with no overtopping. For the normalization plan, the overtopping is occurred along the critical section, whereas for both dike plan and combination of dike and normalization plan, no overtopping are occurred but the the critical sections are still existed. Revised plans for dike and combination of dike and normalization are equally effective in carrying off flood discharge securely, but have different effects on water utilization during low flow period. Referring to the study result, the best alternative is the revised dike plan

Acceptance Analysis of PDAM Sleman’s Water Tariff, Based on Revenue and Willingness to Pay Projection

In Sleman, the Regional Water Company (PDAM) provides clean water to the community and charges a tariff for each cubic meter of water sold to customers. According to the Minister of Home Affairs Regulation No. 71 of 2016 states, PDAM tariffs requiring an annual review in November. The most recent tariff was set by PDAM Sleman in 2016, therefore, a recalculation is required. In addition, there is a need to analyze the tariff acceptance from the service provider, and service recipient’s point of view. In this study, the calculation tariff method utilized a formula based on the Minister of Home Affairs Regulation No. 71 of 2016. Meanwhile, the acceptance analysis from profit point of view conducted by calculating the projection of water sales revenue, profit to earning assets ratio, and customer willingness to pay (WTP). Furthermore, revenue projections were obtained by multiplying tariffs with the water sold volume, while the WTP projection is obtained using the inflation method, based on the PDAM Sleman customers’ wTP, from the 2007’s research. PDAM Sleman tariffs based on calculations resulted in low tariffs of IDR3727.48, basic tariffs of IDR4659.36, and full rate of IDR9460.17. Based on the WTP analysis, the tariffs are feasible from the service recipient’s (PDAM customers) point of view, because this is affordable by customers, for the average water consumption. However, from the service provider’s (PDAM Sleman) point of view, the tariffs are not feasible a 0.31% profit ratio is much lower, compared to the 10% profit ratio. Therefore, tariff adjustments are required to increase profits. These strategies include determining tariffs based on consumption blocks alone, without breaking down based on customer group categories and adjusting the second and third consumption blocks’ rate

    Get PDF
The short-duration-rainfall monitoring techniques have become important recently due to the high demand for disaster risk mitigation. Such techniques produce important information on the rainfall intensity during heavy rainfall in the form of snake line. At the same time, use of X-Band Multi-Parameter Radar (XMP Radar) in rainfall monitoring has increased significantly because of its capacity to cover wide area. An assessment on the snake line performance that was developed based on XMP Radar and ground rainfall monitoring instrument (i.e. Automatic Rainfall Recorder or ARR) has been applied to Mt. Merapi area, Java, Indonesia. Selected rainfall data of November-December 2018 were examined. The assessment used a single pixel of radar data at the location of the ARR. The result shows that rainfall data obtained from XMP Radar are lower than those from ARR. The computed snake line obtained from XMP Radar differs from that from ARR data. The XMP Radar underestimates the warning level by about two level out of four

The paper reports a classroom action research that aimed to determine the impact of a Content and Language Integrated Learning on the mastery of vocabulary and of course contents of a group of students in the Accounting Department of Universitas Ma Chung. It also intended to identify their opinions about the effectiveness of such approach. To achieve these objectives, a Time Series Design was used in a Classroom Action Research framework to introduce an adjunct class to the accounting class. The baseline data in the form of their vocabulary mastery and knowledge of the course contents were gained before the adjunct session was given. Then, the adjunct sessions were given for a period of two months. A few tests were administered to measure their progress in the mastery of vocabulary and course contents. A comparison was then drawn between the scores of the baseline data and the subsequent measures. In general, although they gained better mastery of new words, they failed to utilize them to increase their mastery of the course contents. Further exploration into the interview data reveals that most of them did not feel any significant assistance in mastering the course contents, although many of them admitted the benefit of mastering new vocabulary. There are some possible causes of the results. First, the limited duration of the adjunct sessions was felt to hinder the effectiveness. Second, the explanation in the adjunct sessions were not matched quite well with the focus during the main content course. On the basis of the results, the recommended points are the matching between the emphasis of both classes, and the lengthening of the duration of the adjunct sessions

The paper reports the development of a course of multimodal creative writing at an English Letters Department, Universitas Ma Chung, Indonesia. It involved 56 students who were taking Creative Writing course. Prior to the teaching of multimodal creative writing, they were tested for creative writing ability and their knowledge of creative writing. They were also asked how the teaching should be carried out. ADDIE was used to design the multimodal course. The course introduced the students to incorporate several semiotic modes, which included photographs, video clips, and podcast materials, into their written essays. Models of essays incorporating each of those elements were presented and explained before the students were assigned to produce multimodal essays independently. By the end of the semester, they were again tested for their abilities to create multimodal essays and their knowledge about multimodality. There was a marked increase in their scores from their previous scores in the pre-test. Overall, the respondents showed positive attitude toward multimodal creative writing. Further development should emphasize the seamless connection between the visual and aural elements and the written essays, which as a whole should work harmoniously to create enjoyable pieces of multimodal essays. Along with that, the evaluation should also assess elements other than those which have been conventionally assessed in creative writing
