    Get PDF
Glass ionomer cements (GICs) have been widely used as restorative dental materials due to the biocompatibility property that able to form direct bonding to the tooth structure and the release of fluoride ions that protect against dental caries and able to regenerate hard tissues including bones and tooth structure. Among the disadvantages, GICs are chemically soluble in saliva water environment that need a protective layer of methacrylate based gloss, the setting reaction affected by water, abrasive, weak in mechanical properties such as strength and hardness. Thus, it is required to develop new composition and the studies on the improvement of the mentioned aspects in order to find a better product for future restorative dental material. Modification of commercial GICs with hydroxyapatite (HA) stainless steel, zirconia, glass, HNzirconia, HNglass have been reported in literatures to improve mechanical properties. However, the improvement on mechanical properties was not significant. In all cases, they used commercial powders with particle size in micro range. In addition, a fundamental studies on the effect of powder morphologies and the interaction between additive and GIC that affect mechanical and chemical and biological properties were not elaborated. In our knowledge, the work on the addition of HNsilica nanoparticle is not yet reported in literature. This work is aimed to produce a new composition of GIC by incorporation of nano HAsilica hybrid to obtain nanocomposites with superior properties. The HA-silica hybrid is derived from in-situ sol-gel process that has been developed in our laboratory. Therefore, incorporation of HA-silica inside the GIC has improved the hardness due to the better interaction between HA-silica-GIC and homogeneous distribution of additive

A Simple Method of Obtaining Spherical Nanosilica from Rice Husk

    Get PDF
This paper describes the synthesis of nanosilica from rice husk. Synthesis was done by precipitation using different acids, namely, orthophosphoric acid and nitric acid which yielded nanosilica. The effect of different acids and different solvents (polar and non-polar) on the size and degree of agglomeration of the silica particles were studied. When precipitation was done without the use of solvents, the silica particles  obtained were non-spherical in shape, whereas, when precipitation was done using polar solvents (ethanol or 2-propanol), the silica particles were spherical. The use of non-polar solvents (toluene and diethyl ether) resulted in silica particles that were irregular in shape and in the case of orthophosphoric acid, a high degree of agglomeration was also noted. The degree of agglomeration was less when orthophosphoric acid was used with polar solvents as compared to nitric acid in conjunction with polar solvents. As regards the size, it ranged from approximately 70nm to 400nm when either acid was used in conjunction with polar solvents. When non-polar solvents were used, the silica particles were irregular in shape and the particle size was not estimated

    Get PDF
The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of silica hybrid nanoparticles on the hardness of the dental nanocomposites. The silica hybrid nanoparticles were synthesized by sol-gel method. The powders were modified with 3-methacryloxy-propyltrimethoxy silane (γ-MPS) either by co-condensation method or one-pot method. The silanized silica were then mixed with  a mixture of bisglycidyl methacrylate (BisGMA), triethylene glycol methacrylate (TEGDMA), camphorquinone (CQ) and dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate (DMAEMA) to form dental nanocomposites.  The hardness of the nanocomposites were determined using vickers hardness. The results shown that hardness of the dental composites using silica hybrid nanoparticles synthesized via one-pot method was higher compared to the synthesized via co-condensation method. Transmission Electron Microscope (TEM), and Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) were used for characterization

Assisted performance – a pragmatic conception of online learning

    Get PDF
This paper proposes a novel theoretical perspective on the nature of online learning. Taking a socio-cultural perspective, an argument is offered for the theorisation of peer to peer learning as a variety of ‘assisted performance’. Using this theoretical lens, a case study is then offered which uses this model to frame an analysis of the nature and occurrences of online exchanges between students, and with tutors. The case study looks at two years of online discussion in a Master’s programme in a United Kingdom university. The results suggest that looking for examples of assisted performance in the online exchanges can offer insights into the learning that can take place in online discussion and offers one way of recognising meaningful online interaction, and therefore point to ways of promoting such exchanges

Sorbent materials based on a hydrazone Schiff base compound, C14H11BrN4O4, were prepared either by immobilizing the ligand into sol-gel (SG1) or bonding to silica (SG2). The sorbent materials were characterized by FT-IR, EDX, SEM, TEM, and TGA. The sorption characteristics of a matrix of eight transition metal ions (Ag+, Cu2+, Co2+, Ni2+, Fe3+, Pb2+, Zn2+, and Mn2+) using batch method were studied. Several key parameters that affected the extraction efficiency such as pH, contact time, metal ions concentration, and gel size (for SGl) were investigated and optimized. Under the optimized conditions, the physically immobilized hydrazone sorbent (SG1) exhibits highest selectivity towards Ag+ ions, while the chemically bonded hydrazone sorbent (SG2) exhibits high extraction for all metal ions tested. However, for practical applications such as the removal and preconcentration of Ag+, the physically immobilized sorbent (SG1) is preferred
