    On the Risk Capital Framework of Financial Institutions

    Get PDF
    In this paper, we consider the risk capital framework adopted by financial institutions. Specifically, we review the recent literature on this issue, and clarify the economic assumptions behind this framework. Based on these observations, we then develop a simple model for analyzing the economic implications of this framework. The main implications are as follows. First, risk capital allocations are theoretically unnecessary without deadweight costs for raising capital, which are not usually assumed in the business practices of financial institutions. Second, the risk-adjusted rate of return is redundant as it provides no additional information beyond the net present value. Third, risk capital allocation is intrinsically difficult because it is hard to incorporate the correlations among asset returns.

    The prevalence of Plasmodium vivax in Vanuatu Islands: Computer simulation of malaria control trails

    We have estimated the degree of transmission of Plasmodium vivax malaria in Vanuatu Islands, eastern Melanesia with the aid of the computer simulations, which has been carried out on the platform of a mathematical transmission model. The malaria caused by Plasmodium vivax has a relapse character, which arises from hypnozoites in the liver. This phenomen makes a malaria control strategy difficult. When the mass drug administration is executed, the prevalence of Plasmodium vivax decreases moderately as compared with that of Plasmodium falciparum, and it recovers before long being affected by the relapses. The simulations suggest that one cannot attain the eradication of Plasmodium vivax malaria without the concentrated execution of the mass drug administration and the vector control that fairly reduces the vactorial capacity

    Operator-based nonlinear feedback control design using robust right coprime factorization

    In this note, robust stabilization and tracking performance of operator based nonlinear feedback control systems are studied by using robust right coprime factorization. Specifically, a new condition of robust right coprime factorization of nonlinear systems with unknown bounded perturbations is derived. Using the new condition, a broader class of nonlinear plants can be controlled robustly. When the spaces of the nonlinear plant output and the reference input are different, a space change filter is designed, and in this case this note considers tracking controller design using the exponential iteration theorem

    Whirling spin order in the quasicrystal approximant Au72_{72}Al14_{14}Tb14_{14}

    Neutron powder diffraction experiment has been performed on the quasicrystal approximant Au72_{72}Al14_{14}Tb14_{14}, a body-center-cubic crystal of icosahedral spin clusters. The long-range antiferromagnetic order was confirmed at the transition temperature TN=10.4T_{\rm N} = 10.4 K. The magnetic structure consists of noncoplanar whirling spins on the icosahedral clusters, arranging antiferroic-manner. A simple icosahedral spin-cluster model with uniaxial anisotropy accounts well the whirling spin order as well as the in-field metamagnetic transition, indicating that the icosahedral symmetry is essential.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure
