An Experimental Investigation of the Scaling of Columnar Joints
Columnar jointing is a fracture pattern common in igneous rocks in which
cracks self-organize into a roughly hexagonal arrangement, leaving behind an
ordered colonnade. We report observations of columnar jointing in a laboratory
analog system, desiccated corn starch slurries. Using measurements of moisture
density, evaporation rates, and fracture advance rates as evidence, we suggest
an advective-diffusive system is responsible for the rough scaling behavior of
columnar joints. This theory explains the order of magnitude difference in
scales between jointing in lavas and in starches. We investigated the scaling
of average columnar cross-sectional areas due to the evaporation rate, the
analog of the cooling rate of igneous columnar joints. We measured column areas
in experiments where the evaporation rate depended on lamp height and time, in
experiments where the evaporation rate was fixed using feedback methods, and in
experiments where gelatin was added to vary the rheology of the starch. Our
results suggest that the column area at a particular depth is related to both
the current conditions, and hysteretically to the geometry of the pattern at
previous depths. We argue that there exists a range of stable column scales
allowed for any particular evaporation rate.Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures, for supporting online movies, go to

Functional interaction of the retinoblastoma and Ini1/Snf5 tumor suppressors in cell growth and pituitary tumorigenesis
The Ini1 subunit of the SWI/SNF chromatin remodeling complex suppresses formation of malignant rhabdoid tumors in humans and mice. Transduction of Ini1 into Ini1-deficient tumor-derived cell lines has indicated that Ini1 arrests cell growth, controls chromosomal ploidy, and suppresses tumorigenesis by regulating components of the retinoblastoma (Rb) signaling pathway. Furthermore, conditional inactivation of Ini1 in mouse fibroblasts alters the expression of various Rb-E2F-regulated genes, indicating that endogenous Ini1 levels may control Rb signaling in cells. We have reported previously that loss of one allele of Ini1 in mouse fibroblasts results only in a 15% to 20% reduction in total Ini1 mRNA levels due to transcriptional compensation by the remaining Ini1 allele. Here, we examine the effects of Ini1 haploinsufficiency on cell growth and immortalization in mouse embryonic fibroblasts. In addition, we examine pituitary tumorigenesis in Rb-Ini1 compound heterozygous mice. Our results reveal that heterozygosity for Ini1 up-regulates cell growth and immortalization and that exogenous Ini1 down-regulates the growth of primary cells in a Rb-dependent manner. Furthermore, loss of Ini1 is redundant with loss of Rb function in the formation of pituitary tumors in Rb heterozygous mice and leads to the formation of large, atypical Rb(+/-) tumor cells lacking adrenocorticotropic hormone expression. These results confirm in vivo the relationship between Rb and Ini1 in tumor suppression and indicate that Ini1 plays a role in maintaining the morphologic and functional differentiation of corticotrophic cells

Health care system planning for and response to a nuclear detonation
The hallmark of a successful response to a nuclear detonation will be the resilience of the community, region, and nation. An incident of this magnitude will rapidly become a national incident; however, the initial critical steps to reduce lives lost, save the lives that can be saved with the resources available, and understand and apply resources available to a complex and dynamic situation will be the responsibility of the local and regional responders and planners. Expectations of the public health and health care systems will be met to the extent possible by coordination, cooperation, and an effort to produce as consistent a response as possible for the victims. Responders will face extraordinarily stressful situations, and their own physical and psychological health is of great importance to optimizing the response. This article illustrates through vignettes and supporting text how the incident may unfold for the various components of the health and medical systems and provides additional context for the discipline-related actions outlined in the state and local planners’ playbook

Functional activation for imitation of seen and heard speech
a b s t r a c t This study examined fMRI activation when perceivers either passively observed or observed and imitated matched or mismatched audiovisual ("McGurk") speech stimuli. Greater activation was observed in the inferior frontal gyrus (IFG) overall for imitation than for perception of audiovisual speech and for imitation of the McGurk-type mismatched stimuli than matched audiovisual stimuli. This unique activation in the IFG during imitation of incongruent audiovisual speech may reflect activation associated with direct matching of incongruent auditory and visual stimuli or conflict between category responses. This study provides novel data about the underlying neurobiology of imitation and integration of AV speech
